COMBINED DOORCHECK AND DOOR BUMPER.

This invention relates to a combined door check and door bumper, and has to do particularly with an extremely simple and eflicacious device adapted to be-moved to one position to operate as a door check and to another position to operate as a door bumper.

Many attempts have hitherto been made to design a device adapted to have the double use of a door check and a door bumper, but

such devices of the prior art have either been inefficient in accomplishing their purpose or have been relatively complicated and expensive to manufacture.

The object of the present invention is to provide a combined check and door bumper of extremely simple construction and one which at the same time will be efficient and positively operative to operate either as a door check or a door bumper, as desired.

Our device consists essentially of only two elements, a housing member which may be generally designated 1, and a movable operating member 2. This housing 1 is of extremely simple construction, and is preferably formed with a single piece of material. In the present construction it is shown as being stamped out to form a housing rectangular in cross section and provided with two Wings 3 and 4, whereby the housing can be secured to the lower corner of the door.

The portion of the housing adjacent the door is preferably open. Theend portions, or top and bottom walls of the housing, are provided with suitable centrally positioned apertures 5 and 6, said apertures being in longitudinal. alignment. The operating member 2 consists merely of an L-shaped rod, one leg of said rod being designated 7 and being adapted to extend downwardly through the apertures 5 and 6, and the other leg of the member 2 being designated 8, and being bent at right angles to the leg 7.

washer 9 rigidly secured thereto, and adapted to position the lower end of a'suitable coil spring 10 which may be inserted through the open side of the housing 1 at the time of assembly. The top end of the housing 1 is provided with a small keyway orslot 11,-and the upper end of the'rod 7 is provided with a small key or extension 12 adapted to cooperate with said keyway'll. The ends of the legs 7 and 8 are provided with suitable bumper members 13 and 14, the bumper 14 on the leg 8 being preferably of a greater diameter than the depth of the housing 1, whereby in case the door is pushed against the friction of the bumper 13, when said device -is operated as a-check, such bumper will prevent marring of the door.

\Vhen it is desired that the device Operate as a check, it will be only necessary to position the leg 8 parallel to the plane of the door whereby the key 12 will co-operate with the keyway 11 when the force of the spring 10 will force the key 12 through such keyway 11 and allow the bumper 13 to be forced against the floor under the tension of the spring '10. This will effectively hold'the door in any desired position. If it is desired that thedevice operate as a bumper, it is only necessary that the operating member 2 be moved ver-. tically until the key 12 is passed through the keyway 11 when the leg 8 may be moved at right angles to the plane of the door in which position the bumper 14 will act as a positive bumper for the door. It will be understood that the key 12 is only of such length that it may easily pass or 'be vertically moved within the coil spring 10.

Applicants are familiarwith a numberof devices of the prior art, but so far asapplicants are aware, they are the first persons to provide an extremely simple. compact and inexpensive combined door check and bumper as shown in the drawings, and which device is movable vertically of the housing to act as a resilient check and which device is also movable vertically of the housing to release the checkand'act as a positive door bumper.

What we claim is: v 1. 2. A combined door check and door bumper, comprising a housing, an operating member movable longitudinallyof said housing, means for attaching'said housing to a door, cooperating means on said housing and said operating means for permitting the said operlowered to act asa check,

A combined door check and door bumper, comprising a housin adapted to be attached to a door, the portion or the housing adjacent the door being open, apertures in the top and bottom walls of the housing for receiving a longitudinal movable operating member provided with a laterally extending top part, a coil spring insertable in the open face of the housing and adapted to normally place the operating member under a crownward tension, and means forming a part of said housing provided with a keyway, and a key on said operative member adaptedto register with said keyway when the top part plane parallel to the door,

A combined door stop and door bumper, comprising a housing, a plunger 'movable within and longitudinally of said housing, one of the sidewalls of said housing being open for the reception of a coil spring, the upper end of said plunger being bent at substantially right angles to the portion within the housing, and means 7 for holding the plunger in raised position whereby itmay be used as abumper, and means for permitting lowering of the plunger whereby it may be used as a check, the upper bentend oi the plunger being movable in an arc of 180 when said plunger is in checking position..'

A combined door stop and door bum-pers, comprising a housing secured to a door and having upper and lower wall portions provided with openings, a plunger extending through the oienings the lower end of which is adapted to engage the floor for serving as a door stop, spring means in the housing nor-mallyrurging the plunger downwardly into door stopping position, the upperend of the plunger having a laterally extending arm, the upper end portion of the housing having a keyway, a lrey on the plunger, said key and keyway being positioned so as to align with each other when the laterally extending arm is in the plane parallel to the door with the arm extending in one direction from the housing, said plunger being rotatable in the'housing whereby the arm can be positioned to extend outwardly at substantially right angles to'the door with the keyway and the key disaligned, and with the end of the arm acting as a door bumper and with the key resting on top of the housing, thus holding the lower end of the plunger raised from the floor and whereby the arm-can bepositioned'in ,a. plane parallel to the door but extending in an opposite direction from thehousing so that both the lower end of the plunger and the end oi the arm are in inoperative positions.
