This invention. relates to a web-typing machine of the well-known Underwood type. In said machine. longitudinally. fan-folded web interleaved. with carbons, and. is inserted around the platen of the machine to be typed upon. After typing each form, the platen is elevated to straighten out the web and the carbons are shifted to be presented to a fresh form. Then the platen is lowered I again to its typing position to tear off the tends far back from the platen. which is another source of creeping of the plies and trouble with reg1strat1on. 7
In th1s invention, there provided a of the carbon-carrier, the slitting truck be ing automatically controlled during the platen elevating and lowering operations. The truck is reciprocable towards and away from the platen between the carbon-carrier and the platen itself. It is connectible tothe platen-frame, so that, when theplaten elevated, the truck need not move, but, when the platen is lowered, the truck will be driven to the rear of the machine away from the platen, slitting the folds of web. The connection between the elevated plateu and the splitter truck is effective during the swing of'the platen down to typing position, to thrust back the splitter truck automatically. I
There may be a relative adjustment such that the carbon-carrier may pick up the splitter truck at any selected point, this adjustment co-operating with the adjustable rear stop for the carbon-carrier, so as to accon'nnodate a variety'of work.

According to the method of handling the work in this invention, a multi-ply longitudinally fan-foldedweb 10 is threaded between carbons 11, which are mounted upon carbonblades 12, and the leading edges of both the 86 carbons and the Web are squared so as to form a. pack, which is inserted down a rear table 13 and under a platen 14, which 00- operates with feed-rolls 15 to line-space the web. Then the platen is rotated to position 00 the web for the first line of typing on the first form, and other lines are typed on the form by means of type-bars 16, the platen being subsequently elevated to straighten out the web and to gage 1t to form length against 95 a front gage 17. In order that the plies of the web may be separated before being inserted around the platen. there is provided a slitting truck,

In Figure 7, the platen is shown in its normal position, in which a lower extension 36 ofv the pawl 34 engages with a pin 37, which is mounted on a plate 38 fast on one of the rails 20, and, owing to the interference of said pin 37, said pawl is rocked on a pivot 39, thereby releasing the end of the shaft which collapses further into the tube.

In order that the knives may be individually threaded between the plies of the web, and in order that the knives maybe positioned to accommodate webs of different widths, the knives are pivotally mounted on the studs 22, which are provided with square heads 50 designed to slide between the rails 23. The knives may be individually swung into or out of engagement with the web, and may be locked in either position by means of finger-pieces 51. In order that the knivc may be held at the proper angle when sw to their effective positions, there may be provided an angular plate 52 which serves a backing for the knives. Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: I
1. The combination with a typewriting machine having a platen, means for guiding a longitudinally fan-folded web to said platen, means including a carbon-holder for shifting the position of carbons interleaved with the plies of said web, a device for displacing the platen preparatory to the carbon-shifting operation, of means for slitting the plies of the web previously to the insertion of the web around the platen; said last-mentioned means including a truck arranged to reciprocate towards and away from the platen, and means operatively connected to said displacing device for operating said truck relatively to said carbonholder at the operation of the platendisplacing device.
2. The combination with a typewriting machine having a platen, means'for guiding a longitudinally fan-folded web to said platen, means including a carbon-holder for shifting the position of carbons interleaved with the plies of said web, a device for displacing the platen preparatory to the carbon-shifting operation, of means for slitting the plies of the web previously to the insertion of the web around the platen, said last-mentioned means including a truck arranged to reciprocate towards and away from the platen, and means operatively connected to said displacing device for operating said truck relatively to said carbon-holder at the operation of the platendisplacing device, and after the completion of the carbon-shifting operation, said truck having knives adjustably mounted thereon, said knives being lockable in either effective or ineffective positions.
3. The combination with a typewriting machine having a platen. means for guiding a longitudinally fan-folded web to said platen, means for shifting the position of carbons interleaved with the plies of said web, and a device for displacing the platen preparatory to the carbon-shifting operation, of means for slitting the plies of the .web previously to the travel of the web around the platen, said lastmentioned means being connected to said displacing device to be operated during the lowering of the platen to its normal position. after the completion of the carbon-shitting operation. 4. The combination with a typewriting machine having arplaten, means for guiding a longitudinally fanfolded web to said platen, means for shifting the position of carbons in terleaved with the plies of said web, and means for displacing the platen preparatory to the carbon-shifting operation, of means at the intake side of the platen for slitting the plies of the web, including a truck arranged to move toward the platen at the advance of the web, and means connecting said truck to said displacing means to be moved away from the platen and slit the web during the latter part of the platen-restoring operation after the completion of the carbon-shifting operation.

The combination with a typewriting machine having a platen revolubly mounted in a displaceable platen-frame, means for con ducting a multi-ply longitudinally fan-folded web to the platen, and means for shifting carbons between the plies of the Web to fresh portions of the web during the platen-dis placing operation, of means for splitting the plies of the web, said last-mentioned means including a truck arranged to reciprocate toward and away from the platen, and means for operatively connecting said truck to the platen-frame in a m anner'to cause the truck to be displaced away from the platen when the platen-frame is lowered to its normal position, at'ter the completion of the carbonshitting operation. 7
8. The combination with a typewriting machinehaving a platen revolubly mounted in a displaceable platen-frame, means for conducting a multi-ply longitudinally fan-folded web to the platen, and means for shifting carbons between the plies of the web to fresh portions of the web during the platen-displacing operation, of means for splitting the plies of the web, said last-mentioned means including a truck arranged to reciprocate toward and away from theplaten, and means for'operatively connecting said truck to the platen-frame in a manner to afford the truck to be displaced awayt'rom the platen when the platen-frame is lowered to itsnormal position, said last-mentioned means including a picked up after the platen has been partly lowered to its normal position.
9. 10.'The combination with a typewriting machine having a platen revolubly mounted in a displaceable platen-frame, means for conducting a multisply longitudinally fan folded web to the platen, and means for shifting carbons between the plies of the web to fresh portions of the web during the platen displacing operation, of means for splitting the plies of the web, said last-mentioned means including a truck operatively connected to the platen-frame, by means of a telescoping device effective to move the truck rearwardly when the platen is lowered to its normal position, said telescoping device including a tube pivotally mounted on said truck, a shaft collapsibly mounted in said tube and having one end pivotally mounted in the platen-frame, and means for positivelyrestoring the position of the truck to its normal position near the platen, when the platen is displaced to its elevated position, said lastmentioned means including a pawl pivotally mounted-at the end of said tube, and a notch at the end of said shaft, said notch engaging with the pawl to draw on the tube, thereby restoring the position of the truck.

The combination with a typwriting machine having a platen, a platen-frame therefor, a device for elevating said platen by rocking said platen-frame, and a webcourse at the introductory side of the platen for conducting a longitudinally fan-folded web, to the platen, said course having rails for guiding a carbon-carrier arranged to reciprocate upon said rails, of means movable relatively to said carbon-carrier fol-slitting the plies of the web at the folds thereof, said last-mentioned means including a truck arranged to reciprocate upon said rails, means connected to said elevating device for ope at ing said truck during the platen-lowering operation, and a plurality of knives detachably mounted on said truck.

The combination with a typewriting machine having a platen, a platen-frame therefor, acdevicefor elevating said platen by rocking'said platen-frame, and a webcourse at the introductory side of the platen for conducting a longitudinally fan-folded web to the platen, said course having rails for guiding a carbon-carrier arranged to reciprocate upon said rails, of means mova ble relatively to saidcarboncarrier for slitting the plies of the web at the folds thereof, said last-mentioned means including a truck arranged to reciprocate upon said rails, means connected to said elevating device for operating said truck during the platenlowermg operation, a plurality of knives detachably mounted onvsaid truck, a kniferetaining plate overlying said truck, the truck having a platform and holes therein for receiving studs fast to the plate, and means for locking said studs to said platform.

The combination with a typewriting machine having a platen, a platen-frame therefor, a device for elevating said platen by rocking said platen-frame, and a webcourse at the introductory side of the platen for conducting a longitudinally fan-folded web, having a plurality of plies, to the platen,
said course having rails for guiding a car hon-carrier arranged to reciprocate upon said rails, of means for slitting the plies cf the web at the folds thereof, said last-mentienct means including a slitting truck arranged to reciprocate upon said rails, relatively to said carbon-carrier, trucleoperating means connected to said elevating device, saidtrucl; including a plate, wheels under said plate to facilitate the sliding of the truck, on said truck interleaved with the plies of the web, said knives being rocliabiy mounted on studs, the studs being mounted on crossrails fast to the plate, and means for simultaneously locking all the knivesin either effective'or ineffective position, said lastmentioned means being also effective to lock thestuds on which the knives are rockably mounted to said cross-rails.

In a fan-fold typewriting machine having a platen and means for elevating the same, a slitting truck, arrangedto reciproeate toward and away from said plat 11, designed to separate theplies of a longitudinally fan-folded web previously to being inserted around the platen, and meansffor operatively connecting said platen-elevating meansto said slitting truck in a manner knives nally fan-folded web previously to being inserted around the platen, and means for operatively connecting said platen-elevatin means to said slitting truck in a manner to a ford the movement of the truck away from the platen when lowering the platen to its nor- 1 mal position, said last-mentioned means including a shaft pivotally mounted on the platen-elevating means, a tube pivotally mounted on said truck, and a pawl adjustably mounted on said tube, said pawl being effective to engage with the end of the shaft when the same is pushed toward the pawl.

In a fan-fold typewriting machine having a platen and means for elevating the same, a slitting truck, arranged to reciprocate toward and away from said platen, designed to separate the plies of a longitudinally fanfolded web previously to, being inserted around the platen, means for operatively connecting said platen-elevating means to said slitting truck in a manner to afford the movement of the truck away from the platen when lowering the platen to its normal position, said last-mentioned means including a shaft pivotally mounted on the platen-elevating means, a tube pivotally mounted on said truck, and a pawl adjustably mounted on said tube, said pawl being effective to engage with the end of the shaft when the same is pushed toward the pawl, and means for releasing said pawl upon reaching a predetermined position of the truck, thereby permitting the shaft to collapse further into the tube.
17 In a fan-fold typewriting machine having a platen and means for elevating the same, a slitting truck, arranged to reciprocate toward and away from said platen, designed to separate the plies of a longitudinally fan-folded web previously to being inserted around the platen, and means for operatively connecting said platen-elevating means to said slitting truck in a manner to afford the movement of the truck away from the platen when lowering the platen to its normal posit-ion, said last-mentioned means including, in combination, a truck having slitting knives thereon, means for moving the truck away from the platen when the same is lowered to its normal position, and means for controlling the travel of said truck.
18. In a fan-fold-web typing machine, the combination of a platen, a carbon-holder at the intake side of the platen movable to shift the carbons when the platen is displaced, a web-splitter, and means operatively connected to the platen for displacing the same and the intakev side of the platen, a web-splitter reciprocable between the platen and the carbon-holder, and means operatively connected to the platen for displacing the same and causing said splitter to split the web-folds between the platen and the carbon-holder.
20. In a fan-fold-web typing machine, the combination of a platema carbon-holder at the intake side of the platen, a web-splitter reciprocable between the platen and the. carbon-holder, and means operatively' connected to the platen for displacing the same and causing said splitter to split the web-folds between the platen and the carbon-holder, said splitting means including a displaceable platen-frame, a set of splitting knives, and means loosely connecting said platen-frame to said set of knives to operate the knives effectively only during the restoration of the platen.

In a fan-fold-web typing machine, the combination of a platen, a carbon-holder at the intake side of the platen, a web-splitter reciprocable between the platen and the carbon-holder, and means operatively connected to the platen for displacing the same and causing said splitter to split the Web-folds between the platen and the carbon-holder, said carbon-holder being movable towards and away from said splitter.

In a fan-fold-web typing machine, the combination of a platen, a carbon-holder at the intake side of the platen, a web-splitter reciprocable between the platen and the carbon-holder, means operatively connected'to the platen for displacing the same and causing said splitter to split the web-folds between the platen and the carbon-holder, said splitting means including a displaceable platen-frame, a set of splitting knives, and means loosely connecting said platen-frame to said set ofknives to operate the knives effectively only during the restoration of the platen, and a stop for limiting the splitting movement of said splitter.
23. In a fan-fold web typing machine, means for stripping carbons interleaved with plies of the web, and means for automaticall splitting the folds of the web while the web is stationary after the stripping'operation is completed.
24. In a fan-fold web typing machine,
mechanism for operating upon the web, and web slitting means having connections with said web-operating mechanism for automatically slitting the folds of the web While it is stationary.
25. Ina fan-fold web typing machine, a carbon-carrier, mechanism for straightening out the Web for allowing the stripping of earbons by said carbon-carrier, and web-slitting means having connections With said straightening-out mechanism for actuating the slitting means to slit the folds of the Web.

In a fan-fold Web typinginaohine, the combination with a platen-carriage, a platen- :tranie and a platen displaceably carried by said frame in the platen-carriage, of a Webslitter, and an operative connection between the platen-frame and said Web-slitt-er to afford movement of the web-slitter by the return nioveinentof the platen into the platenoarriage.
