IMPROVEMENT IN ROCKING-CHAIRS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [69,3 14, dated October 26, 1875; application filed July 14, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OSEPH H. TRAVIS, of Boston, in the county of Suifolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented Improvements in Rocking-Chairs, of which the following is a specification:

This invention relates to certain improvements in that class of rocking-chairs which are secured upon a bed or frame, by means of spiral springs or rubber ligaments, in such a manner as to admit of the chair rocking freely. My invention is designed to obviate the use of the said springs and ligaments, which involves the necessity of boring and weakening the rockers or frame of the chair in order to be attached thereto, and in the case of the ligaments involves the use of attaching nails or devices passing through the said ligaments, which quickly cut out and injure the said ligaments; and my invention consists in the combination With a rocker-frame, provided with one or more rounds and a bed or base provided With one or more rounds, of one or more endless rubber bands constructed to be-passed around the round or rounds to connect the same together, as hereinafter more fully set forth. v

The accompanying drawings illustrate a rocking-chair embodying this invention, Figure 1 being a vertical section from front to rear; Fig. 2, a cross-section substantially on line a; m, Fig. 1.

In the drawings, A is a rocker-frame, which has parallel rockers B B, a seat-frame, G, and

. a back-frame, D; and E is a bed or framework, on the edges F of which the rockers B B of the rocker-frame A rock, all as ordinarily in chairs of the class to which this invention relates, and therefore needing no more particular description herein. G G, two bands,

in the present instance made of elastic indiarubber webbing. These bands Gr G are endless, and they both pass about a common round, H, of the rockerframe A, and a common round, I, of the bed or supporting framework E, which rounds are in a vertical plane intersecting substantially the center of contact between the rockers of rocker-frame A and the bed E, when the rocker-frame is at rest. The straps or bands G G make the connection between the rocker-frame and its bed, and being elastic they can lengthen and shortcnas the rocker-frame is rocked on its single band, G, may be used in place of the two bands G described, or the bands may be increased in number on a single pair of chairrounds, and I, as described, or in addition thereto, on more or less pairs of rounds, such as the pair of rounds J and K, and L and M, one pair each side of the rounds H and 1'. it represents a strip of india-rubber applied and secured in any proper manner to rocking-surfaces of the rockers B B, and to' the surface of edges F to bed E, on which the rockers B Btravel. A contact surface between rockers B B and bed E, such as above described, serves to prevent the slip of the rockers B B, on the bed E, in either a forward or a backward or a lateral direction, and instead of india-rubber, obviously the same result would be produced to'a greater or less extent by a covering of cloth, either plain or rubbencloth,

or of leather, and of many other well-known materials, but india-rubber is preferable, as it secures the object desired to the best possible degree, and besides is very durable. The sides I) b of the rocker-frame A project by flangestrips 0 0 down each side of the bed, so as to confine the rockers of the rocker-frame to the edges F of the bed on which they are to work.

For the bands G G to lengthen and shorten 4 in their connection between the rocker-frame A and bed E, for the purpose stated, they may be of various constructions and forms other than that described, but bands such, and applied, as herein described, accomplish the desired end in a very satisfactory manner.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination of the rocker-frame A, pro- 7 vided with one or more rounds, and the bed provided with one or more rounds, of one or more endless rubber bands, constructed to be passed around the round or rounds, substantially as described.
