IMPROVEMENT IN EXTENSION-TABLES FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,3l0, dated October 26, 1875 application filed September 14, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROSWELL H. S1. JOHN, of Bellefontaine, in the county of Logan and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and Improved Extension-Table for Sewing- Machines, of which the following is a specification: 7
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is' a perspective view of the top of a sewing-machine table, representing, in dotted lines, the cover in position as a cover, and in full lines the same cover in inverted position,forming an extension of the table. A represents the top of a sewing-machin table of any suitable construction. 0 is a cover made of suitable dimensions to cover and protect the mechanism of the sewingmachine in the usual manner. One side, D, of this cover is pivoted at its edge (I to the ends B B of the cover, so that it may swing in the path indicated by the curved dotted lines in Fig. 2. This swinging side constitutes one side of the cover when used as a cover, as illustrated in dotted lines. E is a button pivoted at e, and turning against a stop, G, to hold the swinging side firmly in this position, the free edge of the swinging side being thus clamped between the end of the button E and the bead or shoulder I of the cover top. When the cover is to be used in inverted position to form an extension of the table, as shown in full lines, the swinging side is turned up to form the top of the tableextension, and isthere held by the button F, which is pivoted at f, and turns against a stop-pin, H, holding the free edge of the swinging side B firmly against the bevel or shoulder J. Hooks K are attached to the end of the table for the reception of eyes L fixed on the side of the cover; or, if preferred, clips M (shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6) may be used to hold the extension in its position at the end of the table by means of screws N, fixed on the cover side. These clips are formed so as to converge toward the table end, as shown in Fig. 4, in order that they may exert a wedgelike force on the extension to force it firmly against the end of the table. They are constructed with slots and enlarged openings to receive the screw-heads, and with notches at the termination of the slots, into which the screws descend, so as to lock them in position. Other forms of fastenings may be used, if preferred.
