Application filed March 27, less This invention relates to mechanism for indicating and controlling the box changes in a Jacquard loom. It is very desirable to indicate these changes direct from the jacquard pattern cards, as this avoids the provision of special mechanism for indicating the box changes. Much expense is thereby saved and mechanism must be raised while the vibrator levers of the box mechanism are locked.
It has been proposed to provide a box con trolling mechanism which will be set for operation by the acquard but which will be actually moved by additional mechanism which may be set in any desired time relation to the movement of the box mechanism.
The general object of my invention is to improve the construction of such a box controlling mechanism, simplifying the manufacture thereof and rendering the mechanism reliable and effective in operation.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a box controlling mechanism which will not be deranged when the loom is turned backward one or more picks.
My invention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
A preferred form of the invention is shown in the drawings in which Fig. 1 is a rear view of portions of a loom, indicating generally the combination in which my invention is to be used;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged rear view of a box indicator of commercial type which is used in combination with my improved box controlling mechanism;

Referring to the drawings, I have embodied my improvements in a Jacquard loom which is in general of the usual type, and comprises a loom frame 10 supporting a box indicator B, which is actuated by cords connected to certain of the jac uard hooks or wires 11 and 12, these books eing raised by the usual griff bars 13 and 14 (Fig. 1).
My improved box controlling mechanism is i dicated generally by the letter D and. the
controlling members thereof are connected by levers 18 pivoted on a fixed stud 19 and each provided with a lateral projection 21 (Fig. 3) at an intermediate point, supporting a cam roll 22. Each lever is also slotted transversely as indicated at 23 so that the lever may swing freely past a fixed stud 246 on which a plurality of cams 25 are mounted, corresponding in number to the levers 18.
The cams 25 are loosely mounted on the stud 2 1 and are each provided with a notch 26 to receive the corresponding roll 22 and with two lugs or projections 27 and 28. Cam operating levers 29 and 30 are also pivoted on the stud 24 and are positioned to engage the lugs 27 and 28 respectively. The levers 29 are slotted to receive rods 31, having collars 32 adjustably secured thereto. The rods 31 are connected by cords 33 to the jacquard hooks 12 previously described. The levers 30 are similarly slotted and are provided with rods 34 and collars 35. the rods being connected by cords 36 to the jacquard books 11.
Springs 37 are provided for drawing the levers 29 and 30 downward, holding the levers firmly against stop pins 38. The collars 32 and 35 may be set in any desired position to supply any amount of lost motion between the jacquard and the box indicator, as only a small part of the jacquard travel is necessary for actuating the indicator.
When a box change is to be indicated, one
of the hooks 12 is caused to engage its gri'lf bar 14 and is raised thereby, thus raising the corresponding lever 29 and rotating the associated cam in the direction of the arrow at in Fig. 2.
This will move the cam from the normal position shown in Fig. 2 to the operative position shown in Fig. 3, during which move ment the cam roll 22 is forced out of the recess 26 onto the high part of the cam, and the corresponding lever 18 is moved to the left and operates through the connecting link 15, bell crank 16 and link 17 to produce certain conditions in my improved box controlling mechanism which will be hereinafter described.
'As the grid bar 14 thereafter descends, the lever 29 will return to its normal lowered position, but the cam 25 will remain in the position shown in Fig. 3. When a reverse change is desired, one of the hooks 11 iscaused to engage its griff bar 13, and is raised thereby to swing the corresponding lever 30 upward. During such movement, the lever 13 engages the lug 28 of the associated cam 25 and rotates the cam in the opposite direction to the arrow at until the roll 22 drops into the recess 26, thus restoring the parts to normal position.
As previously stated, the mechanism thus far described is of a commercial type and in its details is not novel in this application.
My improved box controlling mechanism D is preferably closely associated with the drop box mechanism and is thus shown in 5 to 9 of the drawings.
Referring particularly to these figures, I have shown a frame or stand 40, providing bearings for an upper cylinder gear 41 and a lower cylinder gear 42, both rotated continuously by a driving mechanism (not shown). The usual vibrator levers 43 are pivoted on a stud 44 fixed to the frame 40, the levers supporting the usual vibrator gears 45.
The vibrator levers 43 are each provided with cam blocks 46 having concaved outer faces 47 positioned to engage cams 48 loose- 1y mounted on a fixed stud 49 and each having a concentric face 50 and a raised portion 51. When a block 46 is engaged by a concentric portion 50, the corresponding vibrator gear is engaged with the lower cylinder gear 42. When the block 46 is engaged by a raised portion 51, the corresponding vibrator gear is engaged by the upper cylinder gear 41.
1 will now describe the controlling mechanism by which the cams 48 are selectively moved to operative or inoperative position. For this purpose I provide a double pawl 52 for each cam 48, each pawl 52 having two engaging ends 53 and 54. The pawls 52 are mounted upon the stud 55 carried by an actuat-ing lever 56, pivoted on the stud 44, secured to the frame 40. A cam roll 58 is ad justably secured by a bolt and slot connection 59 to the end of the lever 56 and is positioned in the track or groove 60 of a cam 61 secured to the shaft 62 which drives the lower cylinder gear 42.
Springs 63 (Fig. 5) normally swing the pawls 52 to the left hand position as indicated in Fig. 5. The cams 48 are recessed at 64 (Fig. 5) to receive a pin 65, fixed in a stand 66 secured to the frame 40. The pin acts as a stop to limit angular movement of the cams 48. Each cam is provided wit-h two shoulders 67 and 68 for engagement by the pawl ends: 53 and 54 respectively. The pawls 52 are connected by links 7 O to angle arms 71, loosely pivoted on the fixed stud 44, the arms 71 being also connected to thelinks 15 previously described.
Operation.
I have described the details of construction of my improved box controlling mechanism D and I will now describe its operation.
l Jhen a box change is required, one of the links 15 is raised by the jacquard mechanism through the operation of the box indicator B as previously described. Such upward movement of the link 15 acts through'the arm 71 and link 7 O to move the corresponding pawl 52 so that its end 53 will be positioned to engage the shoulder 67 of the corresponding cam 48. The pawl will be held in this position by the box indicator 15 through the connection described, until the lever 56 is raised'by the cam 60. This operation will move the lever and paw] to the position indicated in Fig. 5 and will partially rotate the corresponding cam 48, so that the raised portion51 is moved under the block 46 on the corresponding vibrator lever, and the associated vibrator gear 45 is positioned to engage the upper cylinder gear 41.
The cam remains in this position until a reverse box change is indicated by the box indicator B, when the link 15 will be lowered, permitting the spring 63 to reverse the position of the double pawl 52 and causing the pawl. end 54 to the shoulder 68, rotating the cam rearward and lowering the block 46 of the vibrating lever to the concentric portion of the cam. In the meantime other pawls 52 may have been operated in one direction or the other to accomplish additional box changes.
Obviously the cam 60 may be placed in any desired time relation with the cylinder gears 41 an d 42 and may be caused to operate during the time that the vibrator locking bar is neeaass withdrawnby acam andca-m followervof the usual construction (not shown).
By thecombination ofr'the box indicator B with my improved box controlling mechanism D, I secure a very effeotiveindicating mechanism which may be used toiexcellent advan: tags in a Jacquard loom and I avoid the use in the jacquard:connections-of springs or other similar devices, such as have been heretofore found necessary to compensate for the lack of the necessary time relation between the parts. i
The jacquard mechanism operates the box indicator B as the griff bars 13 or 14 move upward in the usual operation of the jacquard. The box indicator thereupon sets the double pawl 52 immediately upon indication by the jacquard while the roll 58 is in the dwell portion of slot 60. The cam of the box indicator thereafter holds the indication until the lever 56 is raised to set the cam l8 of the box cont-rolling mechanism D.
The cam 48 of the box controlling mechanism thereafter holds its vibrator lever in raised position for any desired number of picks and until such time as an indication from a. jacquard hook 11 is transmitted through the box indicator B to reverse the position of the pawl 52 and cause the cam 48 to be given an opposite angular movement upon the next upward movement of the lever 56.
The use of the box indicator B contributes an essential advantage, as it will be noted that the roll 22 has no intermediate stopping place but will either snap into the recess 26 or will be fully raised by the outer concentric face of the cam 25. If the loom is turned backward a portion of a pick and the roll 22 is moved partially out of its recess, it will immediately snap back into its recess when the loom moves forward, so that it is impossible to position one of the double pawls 52 half way between its two operative positions, a disadvantage which has sometimes arisen in constructions previously suggested. Although I have described my invention as applied to a jacquard mechanism, yet it is useful on other forms of pattern mechanism.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details of construction herein set forth, otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is 1. A box indicating and controlling mechanism for a Jacquard loom comprising means on the loom effective to receive and hold a jacquard indication for any desired number of picks, a box controlling and operating mechanism having a frame, cylinder gears mounted therein, vibrator gears selectively movable between said cylinder gears, vibrator levers for said gears mounted on said frame, positioning members for said vibrator levers movably mounted adjacent thereto, an

In a loom, a acquard mechanism, a drop box controlling and operating mechanism including vibrator gears and levers, devices to selectively raise said levers, means on the loom effective to receive and hold an indication from the jacquard mechanism for any desired number of picks, a regularly moving actuating member for said lever raising devices, and engaging elements for said leverraising devices movably mounted on said actuating member, said engaging elements being controlled by the means on the loom which receives and holds the jacquard indication and each having two differently effective operative positions.
5. A box indicating and controlling mechanism for Jacquard looms comprising a box controlling and operating mechanism having a frame, cylinder gears mounted therein, vibrator gears selectively movable between said cylinder gears, vibrator levers for said gears mounted on said frame, cams movably mounted on said frame and effective to selectively raise said vibrator levers, an actuating member movably mounted on said frame camengaging elements on said actuating member each having a normal operative position in Which it is eifective to advance its cam in one direction. and means controlled from the jacquard mechanism effective to move any selected cam-engagin element to a different position in Which it is efiective to actuate its cam in a reverse direction, and means to hold said element insuch position for any desired number of picks.
