My invention relates to foldable storage .filing cases and particularly that class of filing cases wherein papers such as bank and office records or other valuable fragilevdocumeiits are retained. Y
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a foldable storage filing case having meaiis'for preventing the closure or lidv from contacting with the contents of the case and thereby obviate injury or mutilation of the same.
A further obj ect of the invention resides in the provision of a case of this type constructed in a plurality ofiinitseach of which is capable of being folded into a small flat package permitting the units to be stacked for shipment and which when set up has a pocket at one side for the receptionv and retention of the tongue of the lid or closure.
In the drawings wherein a practical eni bodiinent of the invention is illustrated# Fig. 1. is a perspective of the retaining member embodied in the invent-ion; p
Fig. 2 is a perspective of the removable case unit;
Fig. 3 is a similar view of the case frame;
Fig. 4: is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the assembled case, parts being broken away; Y
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view show-` ing the manner in which the cover is received in the side of the box, and illustrating the pull tab thereon; y
Fig. 6 is a plan view of one of the tabs for association with the case, and
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of such a tab in folded position.
Referring to the invention in detail a` foldable case frame 5 of heavy card-board is provided for the reception of a foldable and removable case unit 6 and has its walls hingedly connected together by flexible strips 7 which are secured to the ends of the walls by al suitable adhesion.
The case unit 6 is arranged to be snugly held within the frame 5 and consists of a heavy cardboard blank 1()A creased transversely at its ends to provide a bottoni 11, sides 12, top 13 contiguous with one of the sides and a depending tongue 14.
With the unit disposed within the frame the sides 12 are parallel to the side walls of the frame and the bottom is retained in place by means of longitudinal strips Sa normally affixed to the side walls of the frame and rar-y ranged to be affixed to the bottoni when the device is being set up by the men.
To retain the removable case unit in the frame and to generally reinforce the structure I i a retaining member 15 is provided. This retaining member comprises an 'elongated cardboard panel of a size to be snugly received in the frame and is provided with transverse foldable end members 1G which engage the rend walls ofthe frame an-d stop short of the upper ends of the end walls of the frame. To reinforce the exposed edges of the frame 5,V and inembe'rsl and the exposed edges of the unit 6 bine ing` strips 16TL are secured around these edges.
Heretofore cases of this type have been so constructed as to permit the tongue of the closure to enter the case proper and thereby niutil'ate or tear fragile valuable papers contained therein. My invention overcomes this objection byproviding aseparate pocket or guide for the tongue. This guide or pocket comprises a spacing` member 18 secured upon the inner face of one of the side walls of the frame directly below the free end of the closure so as to space the adjacent side of the removable unit from this side wall to provide a longitudinal pocket- 19 extending throughout the length of the frame. rlhis spacing strip is only of 'such height as to extend just above the lower edge of the side wall to permit the tongue to be wholly disposed in the pocket with its free edge abutting the upper edge of the spacing strip. As shown the transverse edges of the tongue are beveled so as to facilitate the insertion of the tongue in the pocket.
For the purpose of lifting the lid br closure a novel tab or grasping element 2O is at tached to the former. This tabV or grasping element is bestillustrated in Figs. 6 and and it consists of a longitudinal blank 21 folded transversely upon itself intermediate its ends to afford a pair of legs 22. Slots or inwardly directed incisions 28 are provided which are interlocked with each other to lock the legs together and to dispose the upper faces of the leg ends upwardly. The lower ends of the legs are inserted through a slot 24 in the closure or lid 13 and extended laterally in opposite directions to provide a pair of securing members 23 having a suitable adlflfi hesive upon their upper face by means of which they are secured to the under face of the closure or lid.
In order to pull the case longitudinally from a shelf or other support I provide a tab 24 which is arranged as to prevent the eX- ertion of strain on the frames. rlhis tab 211 consists of a length of stout flexible material folded upon itself and having its extremities passed through a slot 25 at the forward end of the retaining members 15, extended in opposite directions and glued to the upper face thereof. As illustrated in Fig. 4E the tab 24 is extended forwardly between the under face of the retaining members and upper face of the bottom of the unit 6 and thence downwardly between the front wall of the frame 5 and forward edge of the'unit bottom.
rlhus it will be seen that in pulling upon the tab the strain will. be upon the retaining member and not the front wall of the frame.
Withy my improved collapsible case the closure will rest upon the upper ends' of the end member 16 so .that the closure ywill be flush with the upper edges of the frame when closed. Y
What I claim as new and desire to secure by U. S. Letters Patent is:
1. A storage ease comprising a vertically sided frame, a spacing strip uponthe inner face of one of the side walls of the frame, a case unit in the frame andhaving one of its side walls spaced from said frame wall to provide a longitudinal pocket, and a hinged closure for the case'unit having' a tongue engageable in the pocket when the former is in closed position. Y
2. A storage case comprisinga vertically sided frame, a spacing strip upon the inner face of one of the side walls of the frame, a case iinitin the frame and having one of its side walls spaced from said frame wall to provide a longitudinal pocket, and a hinged closure for the case unit having a tongue enn gageable in the pocketwhen the former is in closed position and removable retaining members in the caseunit for retaining the latter in set upk condition.
3. A storage case comprising a frame with lfour vertical sides, with a spacing strip secured to the lower inner face of one side, case unit with a bottom, two sides, a top vand a closure hinged together and secured within the frame by adhesive strips, the case. unit side adjacent the spacing strip being spaced from the frame to form a pocket `for said closure, and a retaining member having a bottom and ends hinged thereto, the retaining Y member being loosely held within the vframe and on top of the case unit, and the sides on the case unit and the ends on the retaining member being shorter than the frame sides so that the cover extends within the frame sides flushA with the top thereof and rests on the.
ends and sides of the retainer and case unit respectively. y
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this25th day of August, 1926.
