VOLCKEHIEG, O BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
POWDER PUFF.
Application filed January 31, 1928. Serial No. 250,757.
My invention relates to powder puffs and articles associated therewith and carried thereby, for use in beautifying and taking care of the face.
More particularly stated, my invention comprehends a powder puff of a simple construction and having a number of advantages, including cheapness of manufacture coupled with efficiency in operation.
My invention further comprehends'a pow der puii' having a container of large size for holding a quantity of face powder, the powder'puif also having a hollow handle for holding a quantity of oily or waxy material, such as rouge or some other cosmetic for beautifying the face.
My invention also contemplates a simple connection between the powder bag and the handle portion, for holding these parts detachably together and preventing leakage between them.
My invention also includes certain details of construction, for improving the general efficiency of powder puifs and partsimmediately associated therewith.
Reference is made to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of one form of my invention, 1 certain parts being shown as broken away.
Figure 2 is a substantially central cross section of the mechanism shown in Figure 1. Figure 3 is a side elevation of the same.
Figure 4: is a perspective of the cap, forming a part of my device.
Figure 5 is a perspective showing another part of my device.
Figure 6 is a plan view my powder puff, showing broken away.
I use two plies 7 8 of flexible fabric, the
plies 7 being provided with a centrally disposed opening 9. The ply 8 is permeable, for discharging a face powder in small quan--- tities.
The two plies of material are soformed and fitted together that their peripheral edges 10, 11 are brought into registry with each other, and sewed together by stitches 12.
The stitching is preferably done upon a sewing machine, and the bag thus formed is of another form of the same as partly turned inside out, so as to bring the edges 10, 11 inward, as. indicated in Figure 2. For this purpose, the opening 9 should be of sufficient size to facilitate turning the bag inside out.
I provide a large, flat ring 13, having a neck portion 1 1 integral with it, this neck portion bein provided externally with a thread.
The parts are so proportioned that the ring'13 may be forced through the opening 9 and thus brought within the bag, so as to leave the neck portion lt protruding outwardly through this opening.
I provide a cylindrical member 15, having a thin portion 16 provided internally with a thread making the thread of the neck portion 1 1. The cylindrical member 15 is providedwith a partition 17, so arranged as to serve as a floor.
By fitting the thin portion 16 upon the neck portion 14 and turning the cylindrical member 15, this cylindrical member can'be screwed down tightly upon the neck portion 14, so that the thin portion 16 grips and de tachably holds the adjacent edge portion of the ply 7.
It will be noted that the portion of the ply 7, thus gripped in position by the thin portion 6, is that portion of the ply-which is bounded by the opening 9, so that this opening is effectively closed.
The cylindrical member 15 is provided with upwardly extending neck portion 19, threaded externally. A cap 20 is provided with an annular flange 21, threaded internally and fitted upon the neck portion 19. That is, the cap 20 is a screw cap, detachably fitted upon the neck of the cylindrical member 15.
.The cap 20 carries a mirror 22, this mirror being slightly convex and thus adapted'for producing a small image.
In order to use the mirror 22, the cap is removed, and turned or placed. in such position as to face the operator.
A quantity of face powder 24L is placed within the powder puff, and is replenished from time to time as exhausted by use.
In order to replenish the powder, the cylindrical member 15 is unscrewed and removed, the powder is poured in through the neck portion 14;, and the cylindrical member 15 is then replaced.
A supply of rouge 25, or analagous material, is housed within the hollow cylindrical member 15, and is normally covered by the cap 20.
In order to use the rouge or analogous material 25, the operator unscrews the cap 20, takes it off, and thus obtains access to the material 25.
If the operator so desires, the mirror 22 may be brought into use, in order to facilitate the application of the material 25 to the lips, or to any other part of the face.
In Figure 6 I show a slightly different form of my invention from the one illustrated 1n the other figures.
A flat ring 26 is provided with a neck portion 27 like the neck portion 14 above described, the flat ring 26 being further provided with holes 28. By means of these holes, stitches 29 are made to extend through the ring 26 and through the adjacent portion of the ply 7. While the stitches 29 may be used if required, they are by no means essential in all cases, the adjacent edge portion of the ply being held firmly in position by pressure of the cylindrical member 15, as above described.
The ring 18 with its neck 14, the handle member 15 and cap 20 may be severally made of metal, celluloid, hard rubber, casein, wood, glass, papier mach, or any other material found suitable for the purpose.
I do not limit myself to the precise mechanism shown, as variations may be made there in without departing from my invention, the scope of which is commensurate with my claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows 1. In a powder puff the combination of a bag serving as a container and provided with an opening, a flat ring located within said bag and provided with a neck extended through said opening, said neck being threaded, and a substantially cylindrical member provided with a threaded portion engaging said neck and further provided with an edge portion engaging the adjacent portion of said bag bounded by said opening, said substantially cylindrical member serving as a handle for the powder pull.
