DIES non FoRM-INGTHR'oA'r SHEETS Eon BOILERS.
Application filed June' 8, 1927; Serial No. 197,496.
-My invention relates: to certain improveconforms to the'section 5 of the lower die. ments indies used in forming throat sheets of The nose piece 9 of the upper die'is made seplocomotive boilers. Throat'sheets of locomoarate from the main body of the die, so as to tive boilers are so shaped that they require: be interchangeable with other nose pieces as 5 dies having different shaped nose pieces to conditions may require. i properly turn the flanges and are diflicult to As shownin Fig. 1 the nose piece is hingedremove from the dies after being'formed unso that 1t can swing clear offthe formed less the upper die is raised to an extreme throat sheet after the blank has been pressed height, making it necessary to provide a very into shape, in order that the finished throat 10 l t k sheet can be readily removed laterally from One object of my invention is to provide the lower die when the upper die is elevated the upper die with a removable section, which a sufficient distance to clear the finished sheet. can be detached and another substituted In Figs. 1 and 2 I have shown the nose piece therefor, and to so arrange the upper die that 9 made in two parts 10l0 andhinged at 11 15 the nose section can be moved in such .a mant t e upp e; o that the nose piece can be ner that a formed throat sheet can be withraised in position as shown in dotted lines in drawn laterally from the lower die. F 1g. 1, to allow for the ready removal of the A f th r obj t f th in ntion i to o throat sheet without raising the die to an exconstruct the upper die that the nose section treme position. The nose piece is held firmly 20 can h t d on a i t, in ts lower inactive position by pins 12, In the accompanying drawings: which pass through openings in a flange on Fi 1 i a id i f n upper and a the body portion of the upper die 6 and open lower die, showing the upper die in position lngs in a flange on the nose piece 9. Other V to press a Sheet metal blank into'the form means of fastening the parts together may 5 f a th t h t; be used without departing from the scope of Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the two dies; e i ven ion. 7 Fi 3 i ide i w of th fir t movabl In some instances the nose piece may be nose section of the upper die; bodily removed from the upper die when it is so Fig, 4 i a sid i w of th second movable necessary to remove the finished throat sheet 30 nose section; v from the lower die.
Fig, 5 i an end vi w of th third movable In the present instance the throat sheet nose section; shown in Fig. 7 requires several operations,
Fig. 6 is a front view of one-half of the using nose pieces of different lengths. The nose section shown in Fig. 5; and flange is first partly formed by a die having a 35 Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a throat fixed nose piece. Then a short nose piece, sheet formed by the dies. Fig. 3, is attached to the upper die so as to 1 is the lower die made in two parts 22. further bend the flange of the heated blank. The lower die has an inclined semi-circular Then a longer nose piece, shown in Fig. 4, is depression 3 conforming to the shape of the attached to the upper die and the operation 40 body portion a of the throat sheet, Fig, 5, and repeated. Then a still longer nose piece,
the front face is inclined as at 4, Fig. 1, being shown in Figs. 5 and 6, is attached to the upat an angle to the depression 3. The upper per die and the flange is forced down in posiedge of the lower die is rounded at the fortion against the lower die. The number of ward end as at 5, so that when the sheet operations will depend upon the depth of the metal blank is ressed into the lower die, it flange and the thickness of the metal of the will produce a ange Z) and a curved connec-, throat sheet. I tion 0 between the body a and the flange. The blank is first bent into semi-cylindrical 6 is the upper die, having a curved portion shape before being placed in the dies, and is oo 7 conforming to the semi-circular recess 3 preferably heated between each pressing 50 of the lower die, so that the semi-cylindrical operation. The dies in the present instance metal blank is held when the upper and lower form the main flange 7) and the side flanges die terminates in a rounded section 8 Which dd, but it will be understood that the dies can be shaped to form different types of flanges without departing from the main features of the invent-ion. v i
I claim:
1. The combination in a die for forming sheet metal having a body portion and a deep flange, such as a throat sheet of alocomotive boiler, of a lower die having a segmental cavity and a face to form the flange of the blank; and a single upper die conforming to the shape of the lower die and having a movable nose section arranged to be moved from the path ofthe formed blank sothat the flanged piece can be removed from the lower die.
2. The combination in means for forming throat sheets of locomotive boilers, of a lower die having an inclined segmental cavity to receive the body of the throat sheet; an inclined surface on which a flange is formed; a single upper die conforming to the shape of the lower die; a nose piece pivotally connected to the upper die; and means for retaining the nose i iece in its active position. 7
3. hecombination of alower die having a segmental cavity conforming to the shape of the body portion of thethroat sheet of a locomotive boiler, said cavity being on an incline, the end face of the die bein at an angle to the inclined surface of the b0 y of the die, the upper die conforming to the shape of the lower die and having a hinged nose piece or:-
tending over the end face of the die, the die and nose piece being flanged; and detachable pins extending through the two flanges and securing the two parts firmly together in the' active position.
WiLLiAM uses.
