' BENDING BRAKE.
Application filed December 23, 1922. Serial No. 608,639.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, N10 KRUMP, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bending Brakes, of which the following, when taken in connection with the drawings accompanying and forming a part hereof, is a full and complete specification.
This invention relates to bending brakes by means of which sheet metal of large size and of considerable thickness may be bent or folded.
Among the objects of the invention are to obtain a brake of great strength and rigidity; which is durable and not liable to break or get out of order; which is economically made; and which is easily understood and operated by men skilled in the art of bending sheet and bar metal.
In the drawings referred to Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a bending brake.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation; and
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3'3 of Fig. 1, viewed as indicated by arrows.
A reference character applied to designate a given part indicates said part throughout the several figures of the drawings wherever the same appears.
A, A, and B, 13 represent the standards or legs of the brake; a, a, represent diagonally extending braces, and b, 7), base members. Said legs, braces and base members are rigidly secured together by rivets G, C.
The bed of the brake is supported by the frame formed by the standards A, A. B, B, and members a, a, and b, b; and comprises the channel iron D (consisting of web 45 and parallel flanges (Z (i the channel iron E (consisting of web 6 andparallel flanges e c and end members D 1).

The upper jaw of the brake comprises,
members F, Gr, and H. Member F is a chan nel iron having a central web and flanges f f. The web f is provided with a curving bend, as, at F, Fig. 3, extending the entire length of the web, so that the flan e 2 is in ahorizontal lane. The or tion of the web 7 adjacent thereto is in a vertical plane and flange f is in a vertical plane, with the portion of the web f which is between said flange f and bend f in a horizontal plane (see Fig. 3).
The membersG, G, respectively consist of a head provided with a horizontal rib or flange g, and an inclined rib or flange g and also provided with a fulcrum, G which extends into a slot, G in adjustable member E on head D at each end of the brake. The plate H and channel iron F are rigidly secured together by rivets 7L, 71,-said rivets extending through the curved portion or bend f of web f. Heads G, G, are secured to the ends of channel iron Fby rivets g at 7L adjacent to flange f and the portion if of said plate (extending from bend h to the edge of the plate) rests on'said flange and is parallel thereto. I represents a steel plate on the under side of the horizontal flange of channel iron F, and 2', 2', represent rivets which extend through said plate,
through flange f and part [i of plate H, rigidly holding said parts together; lower. headed ends of rivets i, 5,. are embedded in plate I, and said plate is arranged to be forced down on to the sheet or bar of metal which is to be bent or folded by the brake, to hold said sheet or bar firmly in place, 'by means of lever J, eccentric j, on pivot J and link K. K represents a pivot which is secured in head D and on which the lower end of link K is pivotally mounted. it represents a stop, to limit the movement of lever J in its travel from the position in which it is illustrated in Fig. 2 to the left, as viewed.

The construction of the upper jaw of the bending brake hereinbefore described is designed to give great rigidity to the forward edge of bar I when a plate, sheet or bar of'inetal (see X, Fig. 3), is bent or folded thereover, by the turning of the bending leaf on its fulcrurns I L from the position in which it is illustrated into'a plane parallel to, or at an acute angle to, plate II.
The purpose of making the bed of the brake of channel irons D and E and plate E, joined by rivets D, D extending through flange 6 web d, and said plate, as described, is to obtain an integral horizontal table (web (Z), extending from the forward flange (Z to the back flange (Z thus obviating any liability of said bed giving or being bent in any direction when great pres sure is brought to bearon said plate E by forcing of the upper aw down on the niaterial about to be bent and positioned between the jaws, and also, when great force is applied to said lower aw in the bending of said material.
I claim;
, 1. In a bending brake, the combination of standards, heads and a bed, all rigidly secured together, said bed comprising channel irons, the central web of one thereof positioned in a vertical plane and its flanges in horizontal planes and the central web of the other positioned in a horizontal plane and its flanges in vertical planes, and a bar, the horizontal web of the second nained channel iron resting on the upper horizontal flange of the first named channel iron, and oneof the vertical flanges of said second named channel iron extending downward in front of the horizontal web of the first named channel iron, said channel irons and said bar all secured rigidly togeth er and arranged to form the lower jaw of the brake with the central web of the second named channel iron forming the table of said bed.

In a bending brake, the combination of standards, heads anda bed, all rigidly secured together, and an upper aw adj ustably mounted on said bed, said upper jaw comprising a channel iron having a longitudinally extending curved bend in the central web thereof, to position a portion of said web and one of its flanges in horizontal planes and a portion of said web and its remaining flange in vertical planes, in combination with a plateprovided with a longitudinally extending bend to position a portion thereof in a horizontal plane arranged to rest on the upper face of said horizontally positioned flange, with the body ofsaid plate which is adjacent to said curved portion of the web of said channel iron rigidly secured thereto, a plate on the under side of said horizontally positioned flange, said last named plate, the portion of said first named plate which rests on said flange, and said flange all secured rigidly together.

In a bending brake a bed, an upper aw adjustably mounted on said bed and 00111- prising a channel iron having a longitudinally extending curved bend in the central web thereof to position a portion of said web and one of said flanges in horizontal planes, a plate provided with a longitudinallyextending bend to position a portion thereof in a horizontal lane arranged to rest on the upper face 0 said horizontally positioned flange, with the body of: said plate which is adjacent to said curved portion of said web of said channel iron rigidly secured thereto, a plate on the under side of said horizontally positioned flange, said last named plate, the portion of saidfirst named plate which rests on said flange and said flange all rigidly secured together, in combination with ,a
