IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED BURGLAR-ALARMS AND DOOR-FASTENERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,220, dated October 26, 1875 application filed July 24, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES J. WooLsEY, of Stamford, in the county of Fai-rfleld and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Burglar-Alarm and Door and Window Fastener, of which the following is a specification:

Figure 1 is a front view of my improved device, part being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, taken through the line as m, Fig. 1.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The invention consists in combining mechanical elements in a novel manner for holding a wound-up clockwork from running down, so that it may, however, by a slight stir of the door, allow the check to be removed, the clock-work to be set in motion, and the alarm to be given.

A represents a door, and B represents a door-casing. C is a plate, which is designed to be attached to the door or window, or to the casing of said door or window, and to which is attached a clockwork, D, and'a gong, E. F is a plate or bar, which is secured to said plate C by two bolts, j", that pass through holes in the plate C, and through short longitudinal slots in the plate F, so that the said plate F may have a short longitudinal movement. Upon the forward edge of the plate C is formed a flange, e, for the forward end of the plate F to strike against. The two bolts f and the flange c are so .arranged that the plate F may strike against all three at the same time, and thus be firmly supported. To the plate F is attached a wedgeshaped plate, wire, or block, G, the edge of which, when the plate F is pushed back, engages with the teeth or the escapement of the escapement-wheel of the clockwork D, and when the said plate F is drawn forward releases the said escapement-wheel, and allows the clock-work. to sound the alarm. Upon the forward end of the plate F is formed a hook, f to receive a link of a chain, H, the other end of which is secured to the door-casing B or the door A, according as the plate C is attached to the door or to the casing.

With this construction, should any one attempt to open the door, the strain upon the chain H slides the plate F forward, withdraws the stop G from the clock-work, and thus sounds the alarm. At the same time the plate F strikes against the flange c and the bolts f so that the chain H prevents the door from being opened, even after the alarm has sounded.

The length of the chain may be adjusted to allow the door to be opened more or less, as may be desired.

The plates 0 F, the clock-work D, and the gong E are covered with a case or cap, I, to conceal and protect them.

By the above-described construction and arrangement of parts I form a combined doorfastener and burglar-alarma fastener, in that its use will enable the sliding bolt ordinarily employed to be dispensed with, and an alarm whose efficiency is not lessened by reason of the adaptation of the device as a fastener.

It will be observed that the plate 0, to which the operating-mechanism is attached, acts as a guard when the device is attached to a door, to prevent the said device from being'injured or interfered with by boring through the said door.

I do not claim the combination, with a swinging door, of an alarm mechanism, adapted to be tripped by traction on a cord attached to a lever or pawl which engages the springratchet of the alarm.

Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- The combination, with the bed-plate C, provided with studs f f, the alarm mechanism D, and chain-fastening H, of the sliding bar F provided with oblong slots and rigid pawl G, all constructed to operate in the manner described, and to serve the double purpose of a door-fastener and a burglar-alarm, as set forth.
