GLUE-APPLYING APPARATUS.
't Appncation'mfi octoberfsn ,1927. ser/iai No. aaazzf i This invention relates lto improvements in glue applying apparatusfand it consists of theinatters hereinafter 'described and more particularly pointerk out in the appended claims. f y
The primary object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of the kind described, especially adapted for use in carton factories and like establishments fonapplying glue to certain end flaps of vpaperv cartonsbefore folding them Over into superposed relation. .Another object of the invention isto provide a portable, power driven apparatus of this kind, which is fast and positive in Operation and which can Abe easily adjusted to regulate the amount of glueapplied to the workoperated upon. These objects of the invention as well as Others, together With the many advantages thereof will :more fully appear. as I proceed with my. specificationa.- v
VIn the-drawings: I Fig. 1 is a-view in front elevation of an apparatus of this'kind, embodying therein the preferredform of my invention.
Fig. .2 isa vertical ,sectional view'on an enlarged scale through the top endof the apparatus as taken On the'line 2-2 OfrFig. l.
Figs. 3 and 4 areffurther vertical sectional lviews thro-,ugh sai'd'Fig. 2 as taken on the linesS-B and 4 4 respectively, thereon. Y
Fig. 5 is a perspective view ofI a certain .saddle block or casting forming a part of 'myl improved apparatus. f.
Referring now in detail to that-embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing, 1 indicates as a whole the standard of my improved apparatus which embodies an upright post 2 secured `at its bottom-end toacrow foot like base 3 having casters 4 by which the apparatus is rendered easily portable. the post is a bracket casting 5 having a hor-i- Zontal, forwardly.r and rearwardly extending bushed bearing'opening rand a longitudinally extending, vertically depending flange 7 arranged to the' front of the post'.` To the front face of tliis ange is fixed a rectangular open top boX like container8 for t-he glue or other adhesive employed. vOn the top end said bracket casting which is fiat as indicated at 9 in Fig. 4 is a pair of upright, laterally spaced ears 10-10.
Journalled in the kbearing opening `6- is Secured to the top Vend of a shaft 11 yand .on-the fronty endthereof is fixeda roll l2 ofl-such la ,diameter asvto bring its bottomk peripheral .portion well into the glue or adhesive in the containerS.
Onthe rear end of this shaft is secured a .y
pulleynl and between this `puley andthe bracket .5, is securedl a spur gear '14. k15
indicatesa saddle block (shown in perspective inY Fig-5) rarranged above the fiat Apart 9 ofthebracket vcasti1"ig',5 between the ears 10Q-10 thereof. Saidvblockincludes a flat base 16, upwardlyand laterally inclined end arms 17-17 and an apertured boss 18 arranged between andparallel with said arms; i
Extending through the ears r101-910 of the bracket casting is a shaft 19 V'which also eX.-` tends through the .saddle block boss 18 whereby said block is capablev of being tilted inthe'plane of the shaft 11 Within certain limitations. In the base ofy said block to f the frontV and rear. of the boss 18 are prol vided adjusting screws v20-20 by which said blockmay be tilted and thenvlocked in the desired position. .In the arms. 17 of Ysaid block is fixed a pin21 parallel withjbut offset to one sideof the shaft l1 and onsaid pin. is-mounteda swingable arm or. plate 22 withl its, free end' overhanging the, fiat part 9 of the bracket casting 5. j 4' 3j' In-the free end vof saidvarm or plate is journalled a shaft 23 arranged above jand parallel with the shaft` 11 and on the front end of the shaft 23 is fixed a roll 24'` having a peripheral engagement with but being of-a diameter smaller than thatrof the roll 12 so that glue or adhesive istransferred from one roll to the other. On the rear end of the shaft 23 is secured a Vspur pinion 25 which meshes with the gear14, said pinionl and gear being of such proportions that the peripheral speeds of said rolls are the same.
Inter-posed betweenV the arm or plate 22 and vo`.1'ie*ofthe arms of the saddle block is a teeth of such radialleng'thandfso formed 'i loo i as to permit of this adjustment without If desired a guard 27 may be carried by the plate or arm 22 to enclose portions of said up by said roll.
gear and pinion. l
On the top of the container 8 to .one side of the roll l2 is lmounted a plate 28 to determine the amount of gluefor adhesive picked This plate is mounted in suitable guides on thel top of the container and may be adjusted toward or away from said roll'by a hand screw 29 andlocked in the 'desired positionY by thumb nuts 30 which take through said plateand extend into the guides therefor.
3l indicates a plate fixed to and'rising from the front wall of the container 8 as best shown in Fig. l. This plate has a bevelled top edge 32 at one end by which the material to which lthe glue or adhesive is to be applied, may be guided between thel front ends of the rolls l2 land 24. At the other end of said plate is a rod like extension 33 againstwhich saidmater'ial may be folded intol the desired position as when said material happens to be the flaps at the ends of cartons and the like.
`Mounted on the post 2 just above the crow foot-base is a U shaped bracket 34 including top and bottom arms 35-35 and a horizontally disposed laterally arranged motor i supporting plate 36.
Said arms are split at their vends so that they may be clamped to the post and' on said plate is a motor 37. On
the bottom arm is fixed a rearwardly extending stud 38 on 'which isjournalled a combined large and small pulley 39 and 40 re i material.
spectively. The large pulley is driven from the motor by a belt 4l while the pulley 13 on the roll shaft 1l isl driven from the small pulley 40 by abelt 42. y Y Y In operation the material to which glue it to be applied, is placed upon the inclined edge of 'the guide plate 3l and is passed or guided between the roll l2 and 24, the glue on said roll being offset therefrom upon said As this material passes between the rolls, the top one will rise that distance corresponding to the thickness of said material by swinging about the arm or plate 22, the spring 2G returning the parts to normal position after passage of the material between said rolls. Should it be desired to have more glue at the front end of the rolls than at the rear end, the screws 20420 on the saddle block l5 are manipulated to pro duce a slight upward tilt to the front end of the roll 24 to space it from the roll l2 a short distance at that end. lf it is desired that more glue be picked `up by the rear end of the roll 24, then the screws 20-20 are malnipulated inthe reverse manner.
` The apparatus is light in weight and is so easilyportable as to be readily brought to the job at hand. Thus it is a handy and y efiicient apparatus for use in all hand gluedisturbing the desired meshing engagement'.
ing operations employed in small shops when the larger. glueing apparatus would beV impractical. It is fast in operation and the parts are strong vand rigid and so arranged" that they will not readily get out of order.
