To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM BLUEGE, a citizen of the United States, residin at Chicago, -in the county of Cook and tate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bundle or Package Tying Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in bundle or package tying machines but more particularly to that type of such machines employed for tying or bindingwith wire, as a tying medium, boxes, cases or containers of varying sizes, different shapes, and of any suitable material.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a machine of the above mentioned general character which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction, strong, durable and highly eflicient in operation.
Another object is to provide a machine of this general character of such construction, arrangement and operation of its parts, that the tying medium or wire can be readily disposed around the bundle or package in proper position thereon and so that it can be quickly drawn taut in such a manner that its meeting or overlapping portions may be effectively twisted together or interlocked and then severed.
A further object is to provide adjustable means for supporting the bundle or package to the end that it can be properly positioned on the machine for being tied at suitable points.
Numerous other objects and advantages I of the invention will be disclosed in the following description and explanation.
The invention consists in certain peculiarities of the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the various parts of the machine whereby certain im-.
portant advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings whichbundle or package and the tying medium or wire will occupy in the initial steps of tying the package.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the machine.
Fig. 4 is a side'view of the upper portion of the machine taken on line i- 1 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows showing the means for raising and lowering the twisting or interlocking mechanism for the wire or tying medium' and for operating said mechanism.

The main or supporting frame of the machine consists of a flat base 10 and a pair of spaced apart uprights 11 vertically mounted thereon. The rear lower portion of each of the uprights 11 is provided with a vertical rack bar 12 to engage the gears 13 which are mounted on a shaft 14: near each of its ends, which shaft is horizon-- tally journaled on a movable platform or table. 15 which is interposed between the uprights 11 of the main frame in such a way as to be vertically adjusted with respect to said uprights. This table or plat: form extends forwardly and rearwardly of the frame uprights 11 as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings and has mounted on its upper surface near its rear end an adjustable gage block or member 16 which is by preference in the form of a box triangular in crosssection and has in its bottom a pair of parallel slots 17 to receive screw bolts 18 seated in the rear portion of the platform 15 and extended upwardly therefrom. Each of the bolts 18 has mounted thereon a thumb nut 19 which and the shaft 14 on which they:are mounted. The pawl 21 is pivoted to one side of the movable platform 15 and has secured to its outer end one end of a spring 22 the other end of which is connected to a projection 23 on said platform. ' As is clearly shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7, each of the wire twisting members 52 and 53 is provided on its periphery with gear teeth 55- to mesh with gears 48and 49 respectively. It will also be seen and understood by reference tosaid figures of the drawings that the wire twisting members 52 and 53 are provided with radial slots 56 which register with one another and are also adapted to register with the cut-away portions 54in the plates 43', 44 and 45 so that the wire or tying medium may be insertedin said slots, it being understood that the slots are open at their outer edges.
Each of the members 43, 44 and 45 is provided in its lower front portion with a bearing 57 which is circular except for the'cutout portion54 and these openings or bearings are for the purpose of receiving the hubs or ends of the cylindrical wire twisting. members 52 and 53 as will be readily understood byreference to Fig. 5 of the drawings. The inner end of the twisting member 53 is provided with a socket 58 to receive a'cylindrical projection 59 on the inner end of the twisting member 52 which projection fits in said socket in such a way that the'members 52 and 53 may have independent movement. As the member 53 is in mesh with the gear 49, which latter gear meshes with the gear 47 while the member 52 is directly in mesh with the gear 48, it is obvious that the members 52 and 53 will be turned in opposite directions when the gears 47 and 48 are rotated through the instrumentality of the lever 51 which lever is provided with a downward extension 60 for the purpose to be presently explained.

The front end of each of the bars 62 is provided with a cutter or knife 66 which project upwardly across the slots 56 in-the wire twisting members, and also across the upper portion of the cut-away parts 54 of the supporting plates or members 43, 44 and 45 for said twisting members. The rear portion of each of the bars 62 is provided with an upwardly extended projection 67 against which projection on one of said bars the extension .60 of the lever 51 will contact when said lever is turned sufficiently in the rotation of the gears47 and 48 to cause the twisting members 52 and 53 to rotate sufficiently to twist the tying wire together when desired.
Mounted on the shaft 46 on the outer surface of the member or plate 45 is an arm 68 which will contact with the projection 67 of the bar 62 located on the adjacent side of the plate 45. Mounted on the front upper portion of the upright 11 adjacent to the plate 45 is a horizontally and laterally extended bracket 69 which has at its upper portion an overhanging guide 70 which is provided with a T-shaped guide-way 71 to receive the rack bar 72 which is correspondingly shaped at its upper portion to fit in said guide-way. This rack bar is reciprocated by means of a gear 73 which is ournaled on the bracket 69 below said bar and meshes therewith.
Mounted on the shaft of the gear 73 is a handle 74 by means of which the gear 73 may be turned in the proper dire tion to move the rack bar as desired. Mounted on the front surface of the bar 72 near its inner end is a bracket 75 which has a forwardly and horizontally disposedextension or floor 76 on which a portion of the wire or tying medium may rest when it is desired to draw the same so as to cause it to tightly bind the package or bundle. Pivoted on the bracket 75 is a grip lever 77 the lower end of which may be serrated or notched to more securely hold the wire. Secured at one of its ends to the upper end of the grip lever 77 is a spring 78 the other end of which is secured to the bracket 75 and said spring will normally cause the lever 77 to grip the wire as is apparent.
Mounted on the front lower portion of the supporting plate or member 43 and extending laterally therefrom is a bracket 79 which has a forwardly and horizontally extending floor 80 located just below the slots 56 in the twisting members 52 and 53 when said slots are placed in proper position to receive the wire 81 as it is being placed in position around the bundle or package for tying the same.
Pivoted on the bracket 79 is a gripping lever 82, which may be of the same construction'as the gripping lever 77 and above referred to. The lever 82 has secured thereto at one of its ends a spring 83 the other end of which is secured to the bracket 79 and is for the purpose of causing the lever 82 to grip the wire 81 when desired.
From the foregoing and by referenceto to the drawings, it will be readily understood and clearly seen that the operation of the machine is simple and as follows:
Assuming that the parts are in about the positions shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing and that the supporting platform 15' has been adjusted to about the proper height and the gage member 16 has been adjusted to accommodate bundles or packages of a certain size, a wire 81 or the tying medium, which may be of any suitable kind but will be referred to hereinafter as' wire, is placed between the gripping lever b2 and the floor 80 of the bracket 79-and then located in the slots 56 of the twisting members 52 and and e'xtendedjj in the form of a loop as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, so as to rest on the platform 15 near its front and said wire is again located in the slots of the twisting members and extended between the floor 76 of the bracket 75 and the gripping lever 77 thereon by means of which lever the wire will be firmly held.
A package or bundle S4 is then placed as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, so as to rest on the lower 'portion of the wire S1 and on the platform against the gage member. When thus positioned, the movable plate 28 carrying the supporting members43, 44 and 45 is lowered by turning the lever 35 downwardly until the lower edges of the said plates rest on the upper surface of the package or bundle 84 in which position said parts will be maintained by reason-of the engagement of the locking rod 37 with the notches 40 of the keeper or'rack 41 thus firmly holding the package in position. By moving the rack bar 72 outwardly, which can be done by means of the handled gear 73 meshing with said bar, it is obvious that the wire 81 will be drawn through the slots '56 of the wire twisting members tightly against the package or bundle when by rotating the twisting members 52 and through the instrumentality of the lever 51 and the connections uniting said'members to said lever the wire will be twisted in oppo site directions at its overlapping portion or that portion thereof engaged by said twisting members, by reason of the fact that said members will be rotated in opposite directions. The wire can now be cut by a slight movement of the lever 51 which will not cause the extension 60 and the arm 68 to contact with the projections 67 of the cutter carrying bars 62 thus forcing said bars rearwardly and'causing their knives or cutters 66 to sever the wire. Afterthis has been done the twisting members will be returned to their normal positions as shown in Fig. 2 by' the lever 51 when the movable plate 28 carrying the twisting mechanismcan be raised from the package or bundle by turning the lever 35 in the proper direction. Then the rack bar 72 can be turned to about the position shown in Fig. 2when the machine will be ready to receive another bundle or package and the foregoing operation repeated.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A bundle or package tying machine comprising a vertically adjustable support,
' a wire twisting mechanism mounted for vertical movement above said support, means to raise and lower said mechanism, and
means to operate the same.
2. A bundle or package tying machine comprising a vertically adjustable support,
a wire twisting mechanism mounted for vertic al movement above said support and in- 1 cluding a pair of cylindrical wire twisting members having alined radial slots andv of each of said twisting members and having a cutter extended across the slot thereof, means to raise and lower sa1d mechanism,
and means to rotate the twisting members in v opposite directions and to move said cutter carrying bars in one direction.
4. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a main frame having spaced apart uprights, of a bundle supporting platform movably-mounted between said uprights, means to raise and lower s'aidplatform, a wire twisting mechanism mounted for vertical movement between the upper portions of said uprights, said mechanism including a vertically disposed supporting frame, a pair of "cylindrical wire twisting members having alined radial slots and jour naled on said frame, a shaft horizontally journaled on said frame, gears on said shaft Y one of which is directly geared to one of the twisting members and the other gear indirectly geared to the other twisting member, and an,- operating lever fixed to-said shaft.
5. In a machine of the'character described, the combination with a vertically adjustable support, of a vertically disposed supporting frame mounted for vertical movement above said support, a pair of Wire twisting members having alined radial slots and journaled on the lower front portion of said frame, a shaft horizontally journaled on said frame, gears on said shaft one of which is directly geared to one of the twisting members and the other gear indirectly geared to the other twisting-member, an operating lever fixed to said shaft, a bracket having a horizontally disposed floor mounted on said frame near the end of one of the twisting members, a spring actuated wire gripping lever pivoted on said bracket, a horizontally and lat- I form, a wire twisting mechanism mounted for vertical movement above said platform,
said mechanism including a vertically dis-c posed and movable supporting frame, a. 'pair of cylindrical wire twisting members having alined radial slots and journaled on said movable frame, a shaft horizontally journaled on said frame, two gears onsaid shaft one of which is directlygeared to one of the twisting members and the other gear indirectly geared to the other twistin member, an operating lever fixed to sai shaft, a slidable and springactuatedvbar located at the outer end of each of said twisting members and having a cutter extended across the slot thereof, means to raise and lower the said movable frame, means to rotate the twisting members and to move said cutter carrying bars in one direction, a bracket having a horizontally disposed floor mounted on the movable frame near the end of one ofthe twisting members, a spring actuated wire gripping lever pivoted on said bracket, a horizontally and laterally movable bar mounted on the main frame near thatend of the movable frame opposite said lever and havin a bracket provided with a horizontally 'sposed floor, a spring actuated wire gripping lever fulcrumed on said bracket, and means to reciprocate said bar.
7 In a machine of the character described, the combination with a vertically adjustable support, of a wire twisting mechanism mounted for vertical movement above said support, means to'raise and lower said mech anism, means to operate the same, wire gripping means located on one side of said mech- ISQ nae:

In a machine of the character described, the combination with a main frame versely connecting the upper portions of said uprights and provided on its front surface with guides, said plate having between said guides anopening, a vertically disposed movable frame having on its rear portion means to engage said guides, a V61; tically disposed rack bar on the rear surface of said movable; frame in register with the opening in said plate, a wire twisting mechansm mounted on the movable frame,
a shaft horizontally journaled rearwardlyof said plate, a gear on said shaft in mesh with said rack bar and a lever on said shaft.
9. In a machine of the character described, a wire twisting mechanism consisting of a vertically disposed and movable frame including a plate provided with spaced apart and forwardly extendedplates or supporting membersprovided in their front lower portions with bearing openings, each of said openings having a cut away portion, a pair of cylindrical wire twisting members located in alinement and journaled in said openings, said members having alined radial slots, a shaft transversely journaled on the forwardly extending supporting members, a pair of gears mounted on said shaft, one ofsaid gears being directly geared to one of the twisting members, a small gear journaled on said supporting members and interposed between the other gear on said shaft andthe other twisting member and. in mesh with the same, an
operating lever on said shaft, and wire gripping means near the ends of the twisting members.
10. In a machine of the character described, a wire tightening mechanism consisting of a slidably mounted member having near one of its ends a bracket provided with a horizontally disposed floor, a gripping lever pivoted on said bracket-and extended at one of its ends toward said floor, a spring connected at one of its ends to that portion of the lever opposite the floor and at its other end to said member and normally holding the lever iii gripping position with respect to the floor, and means to move said member back and forth.

In a machine of the character described; a wire tightening mechanism consisting of a slidably mounted rack bar having at one of its ends a bracket provided with .a horizontally disposed floor, a spring 12. In a machine of the character described, a wire tightening means comprising a fixed bracket having a horizontally disposed floor, a spring actuated gripping lever pivoted to said bracket, a slidably mounted rack bar provided at one of its ends with a bracket having a horizontally disposed floor, a spring actuated gripping lever pivoted to said bracket, a suitably journaled gear in mesh withsaidrack bar, and a handle on the journal of said gear.
