consists the iiovel life'atures of 'co'nstructlon more fully'iset forth in are spec-1- where it may b'esecurely held in'e'i lymo-v ing a rotatable cam a slight degree forclainping theextensible rod in position. Afurt-her'o'bjec't is to provide adjustment for the clamping mechanism of the brace rods so as to take up play that results from wear. Furthe r objects are to provide a brace rod that is positive in its action, one that is durable and one that may be manufactured at comparatively small cost. Further and other objects willbe better apparent from a detailed description of the invention in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a casement window showing my improved brace rod applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a middle longitudinal section taken through the assembled brace rod; Fig. 3 is an elevational view of the tube and clamping mechanism surrounding the rod or core of the device; and Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional detail taken on the line 4- 3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, it will be observed that my improved brace rod is formed of two members, a non-sliding casing A and a sliding rod B, one end of which is supported in said casing. The casing A has a swivel connectionl with a bracket 2 that is adapted to be fixed on the sill S of window frameF; The outer end of rod B is pivotally connected to a bracket 3 which is securely fixed to a casement window W hinged in the frame F.
The outer end of easing A is provided with an annular shoulder at and the inner end is screw-threaded to receive a plug 5 having a head 6. Positioned within the casin A and in contactin relation with lug 5 1s a ring cam 7 having its inner e ge 8 camshaped to cooperate with the cam formation 9 formed on the adjacent edge of a sleeve 10 within casing A and extending through a considerable portion thereof. Between the outer edge 11 of sleeve 10 and shoulder 4 of casing A is arranged a series of clamping members comprising in the order named a ing into slot in, sleeve 10, said slot permit ting reciprocation of isjald'sl'eevebut no'ro wedge ring 12, a fibre contracting i'ing'13; a
wedge ring '14, litre contracting rin 15,
rings ali1dQ15' are split re pectively as designated at 17 andlS and their edgesia;
19 jarid 20*, 20fiespecti velyhre beyelled to scope-ate with s oping or incurred edges 21 or i'ing12, a2, 22 err-m 14, are 23' of an gie.
The sleeveio is held against reas n y a l i i setscrew 24 traversing casing A and enter- 'taeen thereof. a na- 26 isprwiaea is seein A, and a thumb screw 27 traverses said slot and is screwed into the ring cam 7, said slot 26 being of suificient length to allow the thumb screw 27 to be oscillated back and forth and being somewhat wider than the shank of the thumb screw for a purpose hereinafter to become apparent.
hen it is desired to open the window W, the cam 7 is rotated by means of thumb screw 27 in the direction of the arrow (Fig. 4) which releases any tension on the sleeve 10 and, of course, allows the fibre rings 13 and 15 to expand to their normal diameter, thus unclutchingthe rod B and allowing it to slide freely in the casing A. Having adjusted the window to the proper position, the cam 7 is rotated in the direction opposite to that indicated by the arrow (Fig. 4) whereby the cam-shaped edge 8 will force the sleeve 10 outwardly because of the co-action of the edge 8 and edge 9 of said sleeve and the inability of the sleeve 10 to rotate. The outward movement of sleeve 10 causes rings 13 and 15 to be squeezed together by the action of wedge rings 12, 14 and 16, said contraction of rings 13 To permit the ring cam 7 to move further into the casing when the plug 5 is adjusted for wear, there is clearance provided between the sides of slot 26 and thumb screw 27.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a brace rod that may be released or locked with but a very slight movement of the actuating cam, and one wherein there'issultable provislon made for overcoming play or lost motion due to Wear.
1. A brace rod for casement windows, or the like, comprising atubular casing, aplu rality of clutch members within said casing, a rod adapted for sliding movement within said casing, means for actuating the clutch members to grip and release said rod, and
means for effecting adjustment for compensating against play due to wear.
2. A brace rodfor casement windows, or the like, comprising a tubular casing, a plu rality of ring clutch members within said casing, a rod traversing the clutch members and adapted for sliding movement within said casing, and meansfor actuating the clutch members to grip andrelease said rod.
3. Abrace rod for casement windows, orv
the like, comprising a tubular casing, a sleeve adapted for longitudinal movement Within said casing, a plurality of ring clutch mem- Having described my invention, I claim: f
bers confined between said sleeve and abutment at one end of the casing, a rod adapted for movement through the clutch members,
and means for imparting longitudinal move ment to the aforesaid sleeve for effecting a contraction of the clutch members to grip said rod.
