STEAM'ATOMIZING'OIIi E RNE Application filed August 18,1927. Serial No 213,721.
This invention relates to oil burners and my improvements are directed to devices of this character wherein steam is employed.
as the atomizing agent for oil delivered by the burner.
One of the objects of invention is to provide a burner structure wherein steam is caused to envelop the passage through which oil passes to the oil delivery tip, in order that the oil may thus become highly heated just prior to its issuance from said tip. Another object consists in the provision of means causing steam to impinge upon the stream of 011 issulng from the 01.1 delivery tip, to atomizethe 011 and effect a commingling of the oil and steam just prior 7 regulated.
Other features and advantages of my invention will hereinafter appearr V In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side sectional elevation of my improved burner.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 -2 of Fig. 1. I
Fig. 3 is a section on theline 33 of Fig. 1, and V Fig. 4 is a section on the line Hof Fig. 1."
In said views let 1 indicate the'burner body, which is tubular in form, with open ends, and having an angular offset 2. The rear end of the tubular body is provided with an external thread adapting it to receive a closure can 3, while the forward portion of said tubular body is of reduced external diameter, threaded'to receive a nozzle member 4. The tubular body 1 is interiorly threaded at its rearward portion to receive a screw plug 5 that is of reduced external diameter at its forward portion to thereby provide an annular clearance 6 between said plug and tubular. body, the forward end of said plug being screwed into a circular block 7 that fits closely within the forward end of the tubular body, said block having a series of longitudinal grooves 8 extended therethrough. V
The plug 5 is axially pierced with a tubular passage-way 9 and contains a valve stem lying in a forward extension 13 of block thereby to heat the oil flowing through the 10 having a rearward shank portion 11 that I is threaded through therearward 1 portion of the plug, for adjustment purposes, s'aidvalve stem carryinga valve 12 at its forward end,
7 which has aconoidal portion l l'to'co-act with said valve, said extension 13 thence continuing into a cylindrical oil delivery tip.15. The shank portion 11 of th'e valve stem is provided with ahead 16 by which the valve may be adjusted, said head '16 lying-in a recess 17 provided'therefor in the: end ofiplug 5, where it is'readily acc'essi ble upon removal of cap 3. I
It .will'be noted that the 'oflfset 2 is provided with a relatively largepassage-way 18 and a smaller passage-way 19, the passage-way 18 being in communication with l the clearance 6 in the tubular body Land the passage-way 19 communicating, through an orifice 20 in'plug 5, with'the passageway 9 Oil is supplied to the passage-way 9 through passage-way 19, and steam enters clearance 6 from passage-way 18, serving burner, and thence performing the further function of atomizing the thus heated oil issuing from the delivery tip 15. i
The ofiset 2 is shown as'provided with a flange 21, in bolted relation with the flange 22 of a connection 23 having. passage-ways respectively for oil and steam derived from suitable sources, not shown. The nozzle" member 1, hereinbefore referred to as screwed jupon the reduced, forward portion ofthe tubular body, has an axial opening therethrough characterized "by these contours: the inward portion 24 of said opening, which is coextensive with the extension 13 of block 7 has conoidal form complemental to that offsaid extension, there being an annular space 25 left between the opposed conoidal surfaces, which space is regulable in extent by adjustment of the nozzle mem-' hen. to thereby control the passage. of steam delivered thereto through the grooves 8 for oil atomizingand commingling purposes.
Forwardly of said conoidal portion 24 the axial opening has a cylindrical portion 26, the oil delivery tip 15 lying clearingly within this portion, while in advance of said cylindrical portion said axial opening is outwardly flared, as at 27, to permit spreading of the atomized fue l.-
The oil control valve '12 is forwardly ta pered at-28 tor-coincide with the internal taper of. extension 13 to thus control the quantity of oil permitted to pass said valve.
accordingl as said valve is advanced or retracted:
earwardly of the taperedportion 28 the valve has the cylindrical portion 29 with longitudinal clearances 30 formed therein for oil flow, this feature being more clearly shown in the enlarged view'of Fig; 2.
Variations Within the spirit and scope of my invention are equally comprehended in the; foregoing,- disclosure.
I claim: 7
1.. An oil lnirne "comprising a tubular body portion, azplughaving an oil passage and'a forwardly reduced portion cooperating :with saicl body portionsto define a steam passage, a block carried-by said plug and havinga series of longitudinal grooves and havinga forwardly extending conoidal portion, a nozzle carried by said body portionsandh'aving awcentral, openingqspaced from but conform ing :to the contour of said conoidal portion and a valve operating in said. oil passage and presenting: a-series1 of longitudinal clearances opening-toward the centralopening of said nozzle.
2.2111 oil burner comprising a tubular body portion, aplug having an axial bore formingan oil passage receivable therein and having a forwardly reduced'portion to provide an annular clearance between said plug and body portion for the passage of steam, a burner nozzle-having a tapered opening carried by said body portion, a block at tached to the forward end of said plug. and having abore forming a continuation of the axial bore of the latter, saidblock having a series of. longitudinal grooves extender. therethrough and establishing communication between said .annulanclearance and the burner nozzle, said block further having a forward conoidal portion spaced from the Walls of the tapered opening of said. nozzle, and an adjustable valve disposed Within the bore of said block andeinbodying'a head portion having a series of. longitudinal clearances therein.
