Description

LE ROY R. OWEN ET AL scam) CHAIR Nov. 6, 1928.
Filed July 30, 1927 1?. Oil/670, 0- EWZZ/ ema;
' the general object of the invention being'to Patented Nov. 6, 1923.
UNITED-STATES PATENT,- OFF ICE.
LE ROY R. OWEN AND OWEN E. WHITEMAN, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
SCBEED CHAIR.
Application filed July 30,
This invention relates to' a screed chair,
provide means-whereby the chair can be. easily and quickly put in place-without interfering with the reinforcing material and with the use of but few tools.
Another object of the invention is to so form the device that parts thereof can be used over and over again.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing our invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view partly in section, show-. ing the device in use.
Figure 2 is a similar view butquarter turn from Figure 1.
As is well known, in, building concrete floors, the concrete is leveled by a straightedge resting on what is known asscreeds, these screeds being metal pipes or pieces'of wood. The screeds are supported on chairs which must be attached to portions of the forms before the .cementis poured on the taken a forms and heretofore it has been a difiicult matter to place these chairs in position, as the reinforcing material for the concrete makes installation diflicult.
In carrying out our invention, we provide an L-shaped rod 1 which is threaded as shown-at 2, so that it can receive a wing nut 23, the threaded portion being adapted to pass through aholefl made in a part of the form A. By making this rod of L-shape, the short limb thereof acts as a handle so that a wrench is not needed to turn the rod. A channel member '5 has each limb thereof formed with a threaded hole, one of which receives the threaded end of the rod 1 and the other receives the threaded end of a rod 6 which has its upper end shaped to receive the screed B. The drawing shows the upper end of 1927. -Seria1 No.209,573.
the rod 6 as bent-to form a curved recess 7 to receivethe pipe form of screed shown, but
if aflat screed is to be used, the upper endof l the rod 6 would be formed flat.
7 a hole can be easily bored without interfer ence on the part of the reinforcing material. One man below the form would handle the rod 1 andthe nut 3, while a second'man above the form would hold the channel member 5 as the rod 2 is being screwed int-o the same.
Thus the chair can be easily and quickly installed by two men.- Of course, the parts. 5 and 6 will remain in the concrete floor, but 7 the parts 1 and 3 can be removed'and used over and over again. The small hole left by themember 2 can be easily covered up. and pointed with concrete. By threading the rods 1 and 6 into themember 5, the parts can be adjusted to be used with different thicknesses of floors. a It is thought from the foregoing descrip- I tion that the advantages andnovel features of our invention will be readily apparent.
We desire'it to be understood that we may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What we claimv is ing an L-shaped rod having its long arm threaded and adapted to be passed through a hole made in afform, a channel member having a threaded hole in each limb thereof, the hole in the lower limb receiving the end of the threaded rod, a nut on said rod for 1. A device of the classdescribed compris lll'ill member having upper and lower threadthereof and a screed supporting member haved holes therein, the lower hole receiving the ing its lower end threaded to engage the up threaded portion of said member when said per threaded hole in the central member. 0 c nt a me ber re s up n t e fo a u In testimony whereof We afiix our signaon the threaded part of the member for en-- tures.
gaging the lower face of the form, with the LE ROY R. OWEN.
central 'member engaging the upper face OWEN E. VVHITEMAN.
