.Application `ledk August 8,
My inve tion relates to amusement*devices and my object isto `provide a comparatively simple andinexpensive device ot thischaracter having a combinedrotary and toeter action. t i
Another object .istoy provide an amusement device which may hey ope atedby the moven'ientoi the bodies of the pas igers, so that the costei? }.n'o.viciing and maintaining motor tor that purpose may be avoided, thereby rendering the device especially suitable tor use on public play grounds,
A further object is-to provide a device oit' this character ot substantial construction so that children playing)` thereon are not likely to become injured through breakage et' any ot the pars. l K
ther objects will hereinafter appear, and in order thatI the invention may be fully understood reference will now be had to the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view ot the device with the lower portion thereot in section. I
Fig. 2 is a detail plan view ot'. the upper portion of the device arranged in a horizonm tal plane.
iig. 3 is a horizontal section on line III-III of Fig. 1. A
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section online IV IV of Fig. 1.
In carrying out they invention, I employ a conical casing 2 provided at its upper end with a socket 4t to receive a ball (3, which is operahly held. in said socket by a cap S.
i() designates an inclined shaft provided intermediate its ends with the ball' G9 which is tilted to said shaft to support the same. The upper end of said shaft is provided. with a spider-like passenger carrying)` frame 12 consisting of radial members 11iprovided at their outer ends with seats 16, braces 18, and struts 20. The inner or adjacent ends oi" the radial members are united by a coupling' 22 secured to the upper end ot the shait 10. The braces 18 are connected at their outer ends to the radial members 1d and at their innercnds to hearing 2t ixedly mounted upon the shaft 10. The struts 2O hold the radial members in unin form spaced relation and areaided in this by connecting rods, tubes or bars 2t which unite the seats 16 in pairs as shown by Fig. 2.
Handles 26 are disposed in iront of the seats 16 and liXed to the members 1li, tor the passengers to hold to.
The lower endof ythe shaft 10 is provided with an-antiirictionroller 28 which travels inten annular guide 30 in the bottom of the casino' 2,.and thus. maintains said shaft in an,inclined.positiom y i .In4 prac-ice the `casii'ig 2` preferably sunk to the level of the ground as shown by Fig. 1,-v 4 H "irom upsettingand, alsrnto` .n 16 `close to the ground so that they can be reailily mounted by children without the aid ot a platform. The casingr 2 is aided in supporting the shait l() and the trame 12 by anchors 32, the lower portions oi' which are embeded` in the ground while their upper portions extend through holes in the socket t and the cap 8 and are provided with nuts 34 for holding said cap 8 down upon the hall 6,
Passengers may start the shaift 10 and the passenger carrying 'frame 12 in motion by running beside the seats 1G for a short distance while pushing thereon before vaulting' into said seats. After the passengers become seated the motion is continued by said pacsengers leaning inwardly toward the shaft 10 as the seats 16 move upwardly from their lowermost position, then leaning outwardly as said seats descend. During the course ot the operation the shaft 10 not only revolves lout its ends gyrate or describe orbits about an imaginary axis extending` vertically through the center ot the ball 6, the diameter ot the orbital paths being restricted by the roller 28 and the guide 30. The shatt 10 and the frame 12 may also be caused to toeter by shitting the weight in such manner as to cause the higher seats to move downwardly and the lower seats upwardly.
From the Joregoiug description taken in connection with the drawings it will he ap )arent that the device .not onlv revolves but t 1 also nas a eeterinfr action which ados to the amusement of the children or other pas.
sengers occupying the seatsr 16.
lWhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment ot' the invention, I reserve the right to malte such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as properly tall within the spirit and scope ot the invention as claimed.
IIa-ving thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is:
1. An amusement device consisting of a casing adapted to be set into the ground and provided at its upper portion with a socket ment, an antifriction roller mounted uponv the lower end of said shaft and arranged to Vtravel in the channel in the lower' portion of the casing, a ball'fixed to vthe shaft intermediate the ends of the latter-1 and freely mounted in the socket in the upper portion of the casing, and passenger carrier means mounted upon the upper portion ofthe shaft. n
Q 'An amusement device consisting of a ball rand socket support, an inclined `shaft in either direction, said shaft being also free to rotate axially independently of any orbital movement or vice Versa, ak spider fixed at its central portion to the upper portion of said shaft and including radially extending members, seats fixed to the outer portions of said members and through which the occupants ofthe seats can impart the above-mentioned movements to kthe shaft, and stationary circular meansr extending around the lower end of the shaft to limit 30' the inclination of the latter.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.A
