VEHICLE HEADLIGHT.

This invention relates to motor vehicle head lights and has for its primary object the provision of a head light wherein is provided a novel and effective connection between a lens ring and casing of the lamp which functions to maintain the reflector in a seated and secured position within the lamp, to protect the glass lens from shocks or jars which might fracture or injure the same and to facilitate generally the position ing of the lens ring upon the lamp body in a positive, effective and secure manner with out difiicult or fatiguing effort.
With these and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangements of parts hereinafter to be fully described and pointed out in the appended claim.

Referring more particularly to the drawing the numeral 1 designates the body or casing of a motor vehicle head lamp. This body, as usual, is provided with an iii-turned reflector engaging flange 2 at the open front side thereof, and arranged to rest directly upon this flange is the out-turned base flange 3 provided upon the periphery of a parabolic reflector 4, arranged to be positioned within the casing 1 in the usual manner. The center of the reflector is provided with a socket 5 for the reception of the usual incandescent lamp 6, arranged in the principal axis of the reflector.
Joining the flange 3 with the paraboloidal body of the reflector is a longitudinally extending annular wall 7 which constitutes a seat for a circular gasket 8, employed for resiliently spacing the glass lens 9 of the lamp from the reflector. The lens 9 is carried by an annular lens ring '10, preferably formed from .sheet metal and constructed to provide an iii-turned outer wall 11, having its inner periphery engaged with an annular shoulder 12 provided on the periphery of the lens 9. The lens ring also includes a longitudinally extending annular Wall 13, of slightly greater diameter than the outer end of the casing 1, the said wall 13 terminating inwardly in a head 14: which is adapted to engage with the casing 1.
To lock the ring in connection with the casing the said ring, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, is provided with a plurality of sheet metal locking members 15, disclosed in detail in Figure 3. Each of these members is formed fromspring sheet metal and includes a horizontal base portion 16, which is riveted or otherwise fastened to the outer annular wall 13 of the lens ring. The base portion 16 terminates inan inwardly extending section 18 which, inturn, terminates in a 1on gitudinally directed. finger 19 arranged to bG'IGCGlVGCl within a recess 20 provided in the periphery of the lens 9. The finger 19 serves to prevent axial rotation of the lens with respect to the ring and also, provides for the securing of the lens in connection with the shoulder 12. However, by pressure the lens may be removed readily from engagement with the ring.
The upper locking member or clip, designated at 15, in additionto connecting the lens with the lens ring is also employed for connecting the lens ring with the casing. To accomplish this, the clip 15 has its base portion 16 provided With a plurality of bowed resilient fingers 21, which are receivable within openings 22 formed in the periphery of the casing 1 but covered normally by the lens ring. At a point diametrically opposite the cli 15 the lens ring is provided with a longitudinally extending screw 23 having its headed end received within a seat 24 arranged at the front of the ring. The shank of the screw passes through an opening 25 provided in the lower of the lens clips 15, through a registering opening 26 in the'flange 2 and is threadedly received within a nut 27 carried interiorly of the casing. v
r In view of the foregoing it will be seen that the tightening of the nut 27 will result in drawing the reflector, ring and the lens in secured relationship with the casing of the lamp, however, by the provision of the resilient arms or fingers 21, provided upon the clip 15 a relief is provided which prevents too great a strain being placed on the lens engaging the clip during the assembling of the lamp.

In a vehicle head lamp, a lens ring, a single metal stamping comprising a central port-ion secured internally Within said lens ring, said stamping being split from one end toward said central portion to form resilient locking tongues adapted to connect said ring with an associated la-nip casing and a second extension formed with said stamping and arranged for holding engage- 10 ment with a lens positioned in said ring.
