Description

T. C. HUWES.
`Glue-Put Furnace. A
N0. 158,998. Patented Oct. 19,1875.
71H11ewesn f [nig/ign UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE THOMAS O. HOWES, OF OOHOES, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND GRAHAM &
HAINES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN GLUE-POT FURNACES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,998, dated October 19, 1875; application filed August 6, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, THOMAS O. HoWEs, of Cohoes, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Glue-Pot Furnace, which invention is fully set forth in the followingJ specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
The object of this invention is to produce a neat, compact, and efficient furnace for heating glue-pots, whereby the fuel employed for the purpose may be economized, and the products of combustion from the same prevented from escaping around the sides of the pot, and defacing and soiling the same, and it consists of a furnace having' a frusto-conic shell, and a grate, draft-opening, and exit-line, said shell being provided with recesses on opposite sides of its upper edge, in combination with a gluepot provided with lugs adapted to fit into said recesses, la-s fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure l represents a vertical section of my improved furnace, and Fig. 2 a horizontal section of the same.
The letter E represents the shell, which is made of sheet-iron, or other suitable sheet metal, in the shape of the frustum of a cone, the larger end forming the base, and the smaller end the support for the glue-pot A. Near the lower part of the furnace is placed .the fire-grate L, and below this, through the sides of the shell, are formed apertures N, for the admission of air. At the iront of the furnace is an opening, G, for the admission of fuel,
Which is provided with a sliding door, I, and at the rear is a flue, J, for the escape of the products of combustion, communicating with the furnace through openin gs K K through its Walls. In front of the door is a hearth, M, to retain the ashes and coals that `might aceidentally fall from the furnace, and keep them from falling where they might do damage. The top of the shell is recessed on opposite sides, as indicated by the letter F, Fig. l, for the reception of the ears or lugs C, to which the bail ofthe glue-pot is secured, in order to allow the pot to fit snugly in the mouth of the furnace, and prevent the escape of the products of combustion )around said mouth'.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a glue-pot furnace having a grate, draftopenings, and exit-due, substantially as shown, the combination of the' frusto-conic shell, pro vided with recesses on opposite sides of its upper edge, with the glue-pot, provided with lugs adapted to fit into said recesses, as and vfor the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 23d Witnesses:
J. VAN SANTvooRD, E. F. KASTENHUBEE.
