HANDLE LOCK.
Application filed April This invention has for its object to pro vide a lock suitable for use in combination with automobile door handles, electrical switch handles and the like, in which there is a handle member for operating locking or switching or other mechanism and which may be rendered immovable by a lrey-controlled locking member.
The main object of the invention is to provide such a key controlled locking member for devices of this character which may be placed in its locking; condition without the use of the key. 7
A further object of the invention to simplify the construction to make it inexpensive to manufacture and durable and .efiicient in use.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the handle lock as herein claimed and all equivalents.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like characters of reference apply to the same parts in different views:
Fig. l is a central sectional view of a handle lock as applied to an automobile door handle member and constructed in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 2 is an end. view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the locking bolt;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view through the tunibler cylinder;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view through the twirler;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the driver; and,
Fig. 'i' is a detail view showing the driver pin in the lock bolt slot.
In these drawings 10 indicates a base adapted to be attached to an automobile door 11 in any desirable manner as by means of screws 12 entering from the inner side of the door. The base forms-i a bearing for a door handle member 2-} having a square shank l t for operating the usual latch mechanisin not shown.
A cylindrical.loci-ting bolt '1 pass transversely through the handle member 13 and is capable of pi'oje ting therefrom into engagement with a slot 16 in the base to prevent the turning of the handle. The movements of this locking bolt are controlled by a lock cylinder 17 which is rotatably mounted in the handle and operates the locking bolt by 19m. Serial No. 465,166.
means of a cylii'idri al driver 18. The longitudinally positioned driver 18 and the trans versely positioned lock bolt are so related that turning movements of the former will produce reciprocation of the latter. This is accomplished by means of a pin 19 pro jecting from the end of the driver 18 slightly eccentric thereto and fitting in a transverse slot 20 of the lockingbolt 15. The slot 20 does not extend entirely across the loci-Ling bolt but its end forms a stop against which the pin 19 strikes for limitingthe turning movement of the driver to one-half of a turn.
The driving connection between the driver 18 and the loci: cylinder 17 consists of a pair of lugs 21 projecting from the end of the driver and fitting within the hey slot which extends longitudinally through the lock cylinder.
ii. spring" 22 seat-ed in a pocket in the end of the driver 18 between the lugs 21 bears on the end of the lock cylinder 17 and takes up all play between the parts to prevent rattling, the driver 18 being thus held against the locking bolt 15 and the lock cylinder 17 against a retaining; ring 23 which forms a bushing at the end of the handle member through which the lock cylinder projects. A shoulder is formed on the lock linder to take this end thrust by its engagement with the retaining ring.
A key 24', when entered through the key slot 22, is adapted to pass through openings of a series of tumbler slides 25 fitting; in transverse slots of the lock cylinder and its opposite serrated edges are so formed to cause said tumblers to be contained with in the lock cylii'ider when the key is fully inserted. This enables the lock cylinder to be turned by means of the hey so as to throw the locking bolt.
When the key is witlulrawn. however, which may he in either the locking or um locking position of the locking bolt, the tu1nblers project into opposite grooves 26 within the handle member. lVhen the hey is with drmvn with the locking bolt in the locking position, the tumblers projecting into the grooves 26 elli'ectively prevent the lock cylinder from being turned and therefore prevent the withdrawal of the locking bolt. and consequently the handle n'ieinber cannot be turned to open the door.
When the grooves 26 are formed with parill) the slot ofthe locking bolt is such that the lock cylinder may only have a half turn, and the cam action for returning the 'tumblers'to the lock cylinder takes/place only during the ln' oyementof the lock cylinder from the position in whiclith'e handle member is unlckcd to the position in which the handle member is locked, It will be apparent that on completing the half turn of the lock cylinder in this direction the tumblers again enter the groovesQb, but as no further movement in this direction is permitted by the engagement of the eccentric pin 19 with the stop at the end" of the slot of the locking bolt, the cams 27 can'notbe made to again withdraw the tumblers, andthe lock cylinder is effectively locked against movement in either direction. This movement of the lock bylinder under which the cams act to return the tumblers may be effected without the presence ofthe keyby turning the projecting end of the lock, cylinder by hanchbut the handle member haying been locked by this action can only be unlocked, by inserting the key to withdraw the tumblers and then turningthe key to withdraw the look ing bolt. i V
For conyenience in turning the projecting end of the lock cylinder byhand itmay be provided with a serrated flange or twirler 28.
hen the locking bolt is withdrawn the handle may be freely turned to operate the latch in the usual manner and when it is desired to lock the door it is not necessary to use the key because the turning of the lock cylinder by hand accomplishes that purpose. When locked, however, the door han die cannot be moved until the locking bolt withdrawn, and this requires the use of the key. The hand locking and key unlocking feature of the invention is not only applicable to automobile door handles and switchhandles but is capable of general use where it is desired to facilitate the locking operation by dispensing with the necessity for the use of a key.
It will be noted that the screws 12 are entered through the inside of the door and thread into the base 10, thus making them inaccessible, and this preyents theremoval of the base in order to open the door.
A stem 29 has a flat surtace3O to fit a corresponding flat surface in the bore of thehandle grip 31 which is held thereon by neans of a screw 32 passing through and :ount'ersunk in the end ot the grip and M liable to work loosig thie fiatsurtaces preventing thegr p from tnrnlngto thereby i. t not release the securing screw.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
