I i 7 'Thelower ends-of the arms 34 and 35 carry jaws 40 and 41 which are adapted to engage under the flange 3 when-thetool isapplied as will be described hereinafter. The two plates 10' and 11- are connected at their lower ends by a crossbar42 which .carriesaninverted U- shaped positioning member 43 having dependin'gfingers spaced apart, a distance substantially equal to the diameter of'the cap6 so thatthe cap can be received and positioned between thetarms when the tool is applying it to the-neck 2 of the can 1.
The cross bar42 has an end 44 which projects laterally a suflicient distance so that it will overlap'thetop of the cap 6 .(see Fig. 3). The purpose of the projecting portion 44 is to prevent'the ,toolfrom being applied so thatthe lever 8 will come on the back side d'f-the tool. If it did, jthe'lever would hit against the projection 44 and the operator would know that the tool was not. properly positioned. With this tool, it is necessary that the cam lever 8 come on the front" side of thetool, because the front side of the tool carries a mechanism applying lever which must. register with the cam lev'er'S in order to swing it into locking position when the cap is applied.

From the foregoing it will be seen that the capcan be quickly and efficiently applied tothe can and that the tool may be expeditiously released to receive another cap, and that. the can capping operation will be greatly facilitated by theuse of my invention. r

5. A cam capping machine comprising two parallel plates constituting supporting means,
a longitudinally movable slide. between the plates, operating means, links connecting theoperating means totheshde, aw members pivoted between the plates,;links .operatively connecting the jawmembers to the slide, a cap receiving means carried by the plates, .a plate on one of the first named plates extend ing at right angles thereto and having .cam slots and a lever loosely mounted in the slide and having means engagingthe cam shaped direction the lever will have motion imparted to it in an outward and downward direction.
6. A can capping machine comprising .two parallel plates, a longitudinally movable slide between the plates, means for imparting movement to the slide, pivoted jaw members carried by the plates, means for ioperatively connecting the jaw members to the slide, a can cap receiving means carried bythe plates, a can cap locking lever actuating means connected to the slide and a guide plate carried by one of the first named plates for controlling the movement 'of-the last named means.
