APPARATUS FOR FORGING on FORMING METAL ARTICLES.
Application filed October 11,1927, Serial No. 225,526, and in Great Britain's'e'ptem'bei" 2, 1926'.
.This invention relates to apparatus for forging or forming metal articles having for its object to reduce the cost of production whilst at the same time speeding up the rate of production.
According to this invention the method of forging or forming metal articles consists in first. heating metal blanks, transferring them on to a moving unit for subjection thereby to impact against at least one forming die and thereafter automatically efiecting the release of the forged articles from the moving unit.
Apparatus'for forging metal articles according to the beforementioned method comprises an operable member, a work-holder carried by said member, means for securing the work in the holder, a die positioned so that the work can make contact therewith, and means for automatically releasing the work from the holder after forging.
Means are, or may be, provided for automatically releasing and ejecting the work from the holders after forging.
The dies are, or may be, rotatable or other wise movable.

Fig. 5 is an elevation of a completely forged tool. a is a rotatable plate mounted on a shaft Z and adapted to be rotated in any suitable manner. a, c are holders mounted at inter vals on flats (Z formed on the periphery of the plate, said holders being provided with supporting dies 6 for the blanks 7 which may be positioned at an angle inclined tothe vertical as shown or at any other suitable angle according to the required formatlon of the forged article. Each holder is provided with a transverse pin 9 screwing into the holder 4 and carrying at its outer end an abutment piece it adapted to engage the blank in the holder, and being provided at its outer end with a crankarm which is pivotally con nected to a spring-pressed forked plunger is.

The blank 1n each holder is supported at. the bottom qo'n a plunger 79 engaged by the forked crank lever g of a spindle r mounted in a bearing 8 on the plate a, said spindle having a. free crank arm t held by a spring u anchored to the plate a and which crank arm is adapted to engage, when passing under the centre of the plate a, a catch 1) fixed on the framing 'w of the apparatus.
Qpposite the periphery of the plate a is suitably mounted upper and lower adjustable die holders 2 and 3, the upper holder 2 carrying a pair of forming rolls or dies 4 between or against which the blanks f are adapted on rotation of the plate a to make contact whilst the lower holder 3 carries a forming die 5 against which the blanks, after contacting with the rolls 4, and being partly formed thereby, also contact to be completely forged. The position of the rolls 4 and die 5 in relation to the plate a and the formation of their contacting faces are such as to give the required shape to the blanks.

In operation, the plate is rotated and as the blanks f are thereby carried round in their holders 0 and caused to make contact or impact with the rolls 4 which, co-acting with the supporting dies 6, bend and shape the exposed ends of the blanks to the form shown in Fig. 4 and when said blanks subsequently contact with the lower forming die 5, they are further and completely forged to the finished shape shown in Fig. 5. A blank is inserted by hand into its holder and on the plunger is connected therewith passing the point 7 of the cam it is released thus gripping it tightly prior to it impacting against the rolls 4. I
After'the blank passes the die 5 the plunger traverses the path 8 of the cam until it again reaches the greatest diameterthereof and in so doing the grip on the blank is released thus leaving it free to fall out. As, however,
it may be found that the forged blanks sometimes stick and are thus preve'nted'from failiag out, the plunger 21 is provided for eject 7 ,ing them. This is effected as follows :when
the free end of the plunger 6 comes in contact with the catch 41 said plunger is tilted whereby. the spindle 7? is rotated and its crank lever Q operated so as to push the plunger p down wards against the blank which is thereby ejected from the holder 0. V
The crank arm is slotted atrits pivotal connection with the forked end of the plungeris. as seen at 9, a pin 10 on the plunger engaging said slot 9 to permit free movement of lever 9 is of a similar nature to the crank arm y and plunger 75 to give free movement. Apparatus made according to this invention, although not shown may be provided V ping member, 1
with two or more rotatable, plates and complementary co-acting dies.
What I, claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. Apparatus for forging metal articles comprising a rotatable member mounted on a shaft, work-holders earned by and movable wlth the rotatable member, a work gripplng member movable transversely of each workholder, a spring-pressed plunger associatedwith and adapted to operate each work gripa stationary cam mounted alongside therotatable member and adapted to actuate in turn the springpressed plungers for gripping and releasing the work, upper and lower dies positioned with respect to the rotatable member so that the work can make sequential contact therewith on rotation of the rotatable member, means permitting ad- I justment of said dies, and means for automaticallydischarging the work from the holders v 2. 3. Apparatus for forging metal articles comprising a rotatable member mounted on shaft, a plurality of work-holders mounted on the periphery of the rotatable member,
supports for the work in said holders, a work gripping member movable transversely of each work holder, an arm to each work gripping member and extraneous to the work holders a stationar cam. a s rin -aressed plunger having a pivotal connection with each arm and rldable over said stationary cam on rotation of the rotatable member, dies positioned with relat on to sald'member so that the work can make contact therewith on rotation of the rotatable member, a path on said cam adapted to actuate each plunger in turn forreleasmgthe work from sald gripping member after contactwith the dies, vand means for automatically ejecting the work on its release, said means comprising a plunger located below the work in each holder, a plunge'r-armfor operating each plunger, a spring-restrained arm connected to each plunger 'arm and pivotally mounted on the rotatable member, an extraneous catch for operating each s1: ring-restrained arm after passing below the centre of the shaft, said spring-pressed arm in turn actuating said plunger-arm to actuate theplunger located in the work holders for ejecting the work therefrom. 5. Apparatus for forging metal articles comprising a rotatable member mounted on a shaft, a plurality of work-ho1ders mounted on the periphery of the rotatable member,
supports for the work in said holders, a work gripping member movable transversely of each work holder, an arm to each work gripping member andfextraneous to the'work holders, a spring-pressed plunger having a pivotal connection with each arm andridable over a stationary cam on rotationof the rotatable member, dies positioned with relation to said member so that the work can make contact therewith o'n rotation of the rotatable member, a path on the cam adapted to actuate each plunger in turn for releasing the work after contact with the dies, and means for automatically ejecting the work on its release, said means comprising a plunger located below thework in each holder, a plunger arm for operating each plunger, a springrestrained arm connected to each arm and pivotally mounted on the rotatable member,
an extraneous catch for operating each spring-restrained arm after passing below the centre of the shaft, said spring-pressed arm in turn' actuating the plungenarm ,to
cause the plunger located in the work holders to eject the Work therefrom, and means for conveying the ejected work away.
6. A machine for swaging articles by wiping contact of blanks with forming means, comprising a work-holder and a die holder in relative movement into and out of swag ing relation, said work-holder including a normally closed gripper and an abutment to eject the work normally held fixed against swaging thrust, and automatic means operating successively, upon termination of relative movement of said holders in swaging relation to cause said gripper to open and be held open while said holders are out of swaging relation, and, upon opening of said gripper, to eject the work from the holder.
7. A machine for swaging articles by wiping contact of blanks with forming means, comprising a Workholder and a die-holder in continuous relative movement into and out of swaging relation, said work-holder includ ing a gripper for the work and an abutment to hold the work against swaging thrust, elastic means tending to hold said gripper closed, elastic means tending to hold said abutment in position to sustain swaging thrust, means acting against said first-named elastic means upon termination of relative swaging movement of said holders, to open and hold open against saidsaid gripper, and means actintg second-named elastic means a ter opening of the gripper to cause said abutment to eject the work.
8. Apparatus for forging metal articles comprising a rotating member mounted on a shaft, a plurality of Work-holders mounted on the periphery of said rotating member, means for securing work in the work-holders, means for ejecting work from the work-holders, a dieholder supported for movement toward and from said shaft, a second die-holder carried by said first-named die holder and movable thereon toward and from said shaft, means adjustable to limit the positions of said die-h0lders relatively to said shaft and to each other to insure proper sequential swaging contact of dies held by said dieholders with work carried by said Workholders, and automatic means for opening said workholder upon termination of each swaging act and holding it open until the beginning of a new swaging act, and for ejecting the work upon opening of the workholder.
