STORE-FRONT CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed October 25, 1927. Serial No. 228,615.
The invention relates to improvements in store front constructions.
An object of the present invention is to improve the construction of store front constructions and more especially the settings for large plate glass windows and to provide a simple, practical and efficient construction of this character which will be strong and durable and in the production of which cost will be lessened and a minimum amount'of metal employed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a store front construction of this character on which all of the work may be done from the outside and which will enable an installation to be made in less time than heretofore.
Another object of the invention is to provide a store front construction in which openings may be conveniently provided for ventilation and drainage.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention. 1

As all four sides of the store front construction or setting are identical, only one side, the bottom one, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and hereinafter referred to.
In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, the store front construction or setting comprises an inside angle member 1 an outside or front molding member 2, and
.an intermediate connecting member 3 which is interlocked at its rear edge with the inside angle member and at its outer edge with a front molding member, said members being maintained in such interlocked relation by means of a screw 4. The members are constructed of bronze, copper or other suitable material, but may be stamped or shaped by any suitable means and the sheet metal of which the members are constructed is sufii ciently thick to render the members rigid and prevent springing of the same. The inside angle member is composed of vertical and horizontal wings 5 and 6, the vertical wing constituting an attaching wing and be ing secured to a wood back strip 7 by a screw in the groove 9' to interlock the rear edge of the connecting strip with the inside member. The lugs 10 are drawn upwardly into engagement with the groove 9 by the screw 4; which is arranged vertically as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing and the screw is also adapted to force the'connecting member downward to withdraw the lugs 10 from the groove 9. The inside member is provided at the too with an outwardly extending portion 11 having a depending vertical flange 12 which bears against the inner face of the window glass 13. The horizontal wing 5 of theinside angle member has its front edge upwardly offset to provide a projecting flange 14 to engage over a horizontal flange 15 extending inwardly from the lower edge of the outside member 2. The outside mem-. ber is provided at thetop with an inwardly extending portion 16 having a depending vertical flange 17 arranged in parallelism with the depending vertical flange 12 of the inside member and adapted to bear against the window glass at the outside thereof, the window glass being clamped between the said flanges 12 and 17 when the members are assembled. The intermediate connecting member is provided at the front with an upwardly offset channeled portion 18 havin a threaded opening 19 to receive the threaded portion of the screw 4 which is provided at its upper end with a head and which passes through an opening 20 in the inwardly extending portion 16 of the outside member, and the said screw is provided with a collar or nut 21 located at the lower face of the inwardly extending portion 16 of the outside member and adapted to prevent the screw from being withdrawn from the opening 20. This will enable the screw to be rotated to throwthe intermediate member upwardly into vtight interlocking engagement with the inside and outside members and also to force the intermediate member downwardly out of engagement with the groove in the channeled portion of the vertical. wing of the inside member when it is desired to separate the parts. The horizontal flange 15 which-extends beneath the flange 14 is provided at its upper face with a projecting portion 22 consisting of a rib and spaced from the body portion of the front member to provide an interior groove 23 to receive a downwardly extending flange 24f projecting from the front edge of the intermediate connecting member. The front member is provided at the groove 23 with a front angular portion 25 which forms the front and top walls of the groove and which is arranged in spaced relatiaon with the rib 22. This enables the front portion of the intermediate strip to be firmly interlocked with the front member and to rock slightly without withdrawing the flange 24; when the intermediate member is raised by the screw to engage the rear flange 10 with the rear groove 9. The lugs or flanges 10 at the rear edge of the intermediate connecting. member extend upwardly and the flange 2-3 at the front edge of the said member extends downwardly and these flanges interlock with the inside and outside members and enable the intermediate member to rigidly connect the same in detachable interloclred relation. In assembling the members of the store front construction, the inside angle member is first secured in position and then the intermediate and front members are assembled and the'bottom flange of the front member is then inserted under the front flange 14 of the horizontalwing of the inside member. I The screw 1 is then turned to engage it with the threaded opening in the intermediate member and to cause thescrew to lift the intermediate member and engage the rear upwardly extending lugs or flanges with the groove 9 of the vertical wing of the inside member. This will cause the members to firmly and securely grip the window glass and it will be clear that all of the work in assembling the parts may be done from the outside.
Suitable openings may be provided at any desired points for ventilating and draining the store front construction.
The angle inside member possesses the advantage of permitting either of its wings or flanges to serve as an attaching portion and when in a store structure there is no backing strip 7, the screw 8 may be transferred from the flange or wing 5 to the flange or wing 6 for securing the said inside member to the sill'or to side jambs, thus doing awa with the backing strip 7."
What is claimed is: V 1. A store front construction comprising an inside angle member having vertical and horizontal wings, the vertical wing being provided with a downwardly opening groove, an outside member provided with'an interior groove, an intermediateconnecting member provided at the back with an upwardly extending flange and having a downwardly extending flange at the front, said flanges being interlocked with. the said grooves, and a screw connecting the outsideand intermediate members and maintaining the latter in interlocked relation with the inside and outside members.
2. A store front construction comprising with oppositely extending flanges to engage the said grooves, and a screw connecting the intermediate connecting member with the front member.
3. A store front construction comprising an angle inside member having vertical and horizontal wings, the vertical wing being provided with a downwardlyopening groove, a
front member provided at the bottom with an inwardly extending flange to engage beneath the horizontal wing of the inside member, said flange being provided at its upper, face with a rib forming an interior groove, an intermediate connecting member having rear ec ges to engage the'said grooves, and a screw connecting the intermediate member with the front member.
4. A store front construct-ion comprising an angle inside member having vertical and horizontal wings, the vertical wing being oppositely projecting flanges at its front and upwardly extending flange at the back, said flanges being engaged with the said grooves, and a screw connecting the outside and intermediate members and maintaining the latter in its interlocked relation with the outside and inside members.
A store front construction comprising an angle inside member having vertical and horizontal wings, the vertical wing being provided with a downwardly opening groove, a front member provided at the bottom with an inwardly extending flange to engage beneath the horizontal wing of the inside memhers said flange being provided at its upper face with a rib forming an interior groove,
and the outside member being also provided at the bottom with an angle portion extending over the rib and forming with the rib a groove an intermediate connecting member provided at its front andrear edges with oppositely projecting flanges to engage the said grooves, said member being also provided with an upwardly projecting channeled portion, and an approximately vertical screw connecting the front member and engaging the channeled portion of the intermediate connecting member.
