In the use of clearer-rolls thus formed and disposed, under some conditions a disad vantage may be experienced through their becoming themselves choked and clogged by the flying fibers, which enter the enclosing casing and are seized by the rapidly-moving teeth and become entan led therewith, so that after a time a mat or more or less compacted fiber is formed tl ereupon. The presence of these mats upon the clearer-rolls is prejudicial to the proper performance of their function of clearing the clothing of the main cylinder. In addition, these mats disengage themselves from time to time and are carried around by the main cylinder.
.Vhen this occurs they go through, between the flats and the cylinder, without being properly worked and adversely affect the uniformity of the fleece. Thus it has been found necessary to stop the carding-engine occasionally to clean the clearer-roll itself by hand, in order to secure a satisfactory quality of output.
The object of the present invention is to overcome this difficulty and to increase the utility of the clearer-roll under the conditions named. To this end,.the invention provides a clearer-roll such as aforesaid with a shield, rotating in unison therewith, which is situated in front of'each separate group or longitudinal section of teeth upon the clearer-roll, with respect to the direction of rotation thereof, so that only the working ends of the teeth project radially beyond it. The result of the use of this device is that the teeth are shielded and the flying fibers are fanned and directed outward in general radial direction away from the axis of rotation of the clearer-roll, and escape without being seized upon the points of the teeth.
Several illustrative embodiments of the invent on are shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows the preferred form of shield used in connection witn a clearer-roll hav ng a hub of relatively large diameter equipped with four separate groups or successive sectionsof teeth, a separate shield protecting each section;
Fig. 2 shows the preferred form of shield used in connection with a clearer-roll having a hub of relatively small diameter having teeth at the ends of radial arms arranged in two groups or sections each with an associated shield; and I Fig. 3 shows a plurality of shields used in connection with a relatively small hub clearer-roll having a single group of suitably mounted teeth.

In Fig. 2, the clearer-roll f has its two groups or sections of teeth arranged diametrically opposite each other at the ends of radial arms. The shields 9, having the same position relative to the teeth as above stated, here are usefully formed with their surfaces suitably curved. Secureinent to the smaller hub may be in any convenient manner.
The clearer-roll of Fig. 3 has only a single group or section h of teeth. A plurality of shields are employed, for example, 2' 2' 2' of which the shield 2' situated the nearest in front of the teeth, does not, as before, quite reach the height of the points of the teeth,

Havingthus described the best form of our invention at present known to us, What We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a preparatory machine for textile fiber, a clearing roll provided with fiber-engaging teeth, said roll having a shield disposed in advance of the teeth, to direct flying fibers away from the base of said teeth.
2. In a preparatory machine for textile fiber, a clearing roll provided With fiber-engaging teeth, said roll having a shield mounted to lie in front of said teeth in the direction of rotation, with its outer edge describing a circle of slightly less diameter than that described by the Working ends of said teeth.
3. In a preparatory machine for textile fiber, a clearing roll provided with successive sections of fiber-engaging teeth, and a shield in spaced'relation to said. teeth and in advance of each section.
4. A preparatory machine for textile fiher having, in combination, a card-clothed cylinder, a clearer-roll for said cylinder having clearer-teeth in successive sections, and a shield in advance of each toothed section.
5. A preparatory machine for textile fiber having, in combination, a card-clothed cylinder and a housing therefor, and a rotating clearer-roll for said cylinder within said llOllS'. ing and having clearer-teeth, and also having a shield in advance of said clearer teeth to prevent impingement upon the teeth of the flying fibers Within the housing and to fan the flying fibers out of the path of said teeth.
