This invention relates to the process known as carding in the manufacture of textile fabrics. g

It is substantially an improvement on patent issued to me, Eddo-V. 'Bateson method and apparatus for carding fibrous material, $11,534,564, April 21, 1925.

Garding machines for carding fiber especially of wool are-now usually arrangedin what are known as sets. A set may be a first breaker and then either a diagonal or scotch feed followed by a second breaker and finisher which may be coupled together or the first and second breaker may be coupled together,

In some cases, a first and second breaker are coupled together, then adiagonal or scotch feed and then an intermediate and finisher coupled'together. V V I In still other cases, there may be three main cylinders connected together by various methods with no intermediate or scotch feed. 7 This invention has particular reference to what-are known as coupled up cards particularly where there are two main cylinders connected by an intermediate doffer or tummer such as shown in the above patent.

I find that by using a. tummer preferably" of large size with reference to the two main cylinders and connecting them, suchtummer being covered with flat wire instead of card clothing, I get better results.

By card clothing, I mean clothing with anelastic or yielding foundation and round wire teeth.

Under fiat wire teeth, I include convex wire toothed card clothing, garnettiwire with saw teeth, and burr cylinder wire with flat-topped teeth, both known to the trade as metallic tooth wire.

Such metallic tooth. wire will not bend nor give, and convexwireteeth will bend or give 45 very little, while the round teeth of card clothing will yield and are permanently bentout ofishape with little difficulty. 1

. Any fiatwire tooth'is rigid and, if rigidly held may separate or even break the stock but will not yield.

However, short stock, dirt and grease fall in between t'he teeth of card clothingand it is necessary to strip the card clothingicylinder quite frequently iHOldGI tomake it most effective while I find by using fiat teeth on certain rolls, they are automatically cleaned andkept clean whereby stripping'by hand is almost entirely done away with and the V stock 'is more evenly'treat'ed'with much fewer' bunches. v r I In applicationfiledAugust 14,1930, Ser.

Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic side elevation of a coupled up set of cards, which would ordinarily be a first and second breaker, associated with a breast to which stock'is delivered by any of the well-known feed devices.

In the drawing, in Fig. 1, 1', 1 may be feed rolls .which deliver the stock to a lickerin 2 which in turn delivers to a tumbler 3 all these .rolls being covered with flat wire.

Preferably I use an angle doffer stripper 50 covered with fiat wire below and between 17 and19 whereby tummer 17 is thoroughly stripped of stock whichis delivered onto the second main cylinder 19.

On that account at the point 51 carding takes place and while some of the stock con tinues to cylinder 19, the lumps and parts which stand up on top of the teeth are carried back to another angle stripper 52 which is covered with fiat wire and turns backward. This again cleans tummer 17 and returns the stock to the first main cylinder 13 to be again reworked. V

The second doffer 23, however, is covered with card clothing and the stock from it is removed by a comb 24 from whence it passes to a tape condenser T ofany well known type shown as having-the receiving rolls 30 and 31 around which the tapes pass.

In Fig. 2 is shown'an angle stripper 54 which strips tr mmer 17 after the stock has been carded between it and second main cylinder 19so that'the'flat wire teeth of 17 are alwavskept clean to receive stock from first main cylinder 13. This breast delivers stock to the first main cylinder 63. As shown, all the rolls of the The first main cylinder 63 covered with flat wire teeth which pitch forward while the cylinder runs forward.

Fancy 65 has fiat wire teeth which pitch 7 backwardand runs backward. Fancy stripper ,66has flat'wire teeth which pitch backward. It runs backward and takes most of the stock from fancy 65 and carries it up on the points of the teeth of cylinder 63. Fancy stripper 165 catches any stock which fiies' in the other views as is also the fancy 22 while the doffer 123 is covered with fiat wire and is cleared by a comb 24 as shown in Fig. 1.

In all cases, I prefer to use a tummer or intermediate dc-fler covered with flat wire the teeth of which pitch forward and which runs backward and which is in carding relation with the second main cylinder.

The teeth of the tuminer are preferably cleaned by one or two angle strippers before they reach the teeth of the first main cylinder.

The surface speeds of the various rolls expressed in feet per minute may be feed rolls 1, 1, 44;, 4 1-; K and L about 20; workers l i, 15, 20, 21, 64, 70 and 71 about 2%; strippers 114:, 115, 120, 121, 164:, 170 and 171 about 800;

I claim:

1. The combination in a coupled up set of cards having a plurality of main cylinders; of feeding mechanism for the first main cylinder; with said main cylinder which is covered with card clothing and travels forward; a plurality of sets of stock working rolls engaging said first main cylinder each set including a flat wire covered worker and a fiat wire covered stripper; a fancy covered with fancy wire; a flat wire covered tummer adapted to clear the first main cylinder and engaging a second main cylinder; a fiat wire covered angle stripper which engages the tummer and a main cylinder; said second main cylinder which is covered with card clothing and travels forward; a plurality of sets of stock working rolls engaging said second main cylinder each set including a fiat wire covered worker and a flat wire covered stripper; a fancy covered with fancy wire; and a doffer adapted to clear the second main cylinder, said dolfer being covered with card clothing and adapted to deliver stock to a tape condenser; together with said tape condenser. 1

The combination in a coupled up set of cards having a plurality of main cylinders; of feeding mechanism for the first Ina-in cylinder; with said main cylinder which is covered with card clothing and travels forward; a plurality of sets of stock working rolls engaging said first main cylinder each set including a fiat wire covered worker and a flat wire covered stripper; a fancy; a flat wire covered tummer adapted to clear the first main cylinder and engaging a second main cylinder; an angle stripper which engages the tummer and a main cylinder; said second main cylinder which is covered with card clothing and travels forward; a plurality of sets of stock working rolls engaging said second main cylinder each set including a flat wire covered worker and a flat wire covered stripper; a fancy; and a doffer adapted to clear the second main cylinder.

4. The combination in of cards having a plurality of main cylinders; of feeding mechanism for the first main cylinder; with said first main cylinder;

a coupled up set a plurality of sets of stock working rolls engaging said first main cylinder; each set including a worker and a stripper;a fancy; a fiat wire covered tummer adapted to clear the first main cylinder and engaging a second main cylinder; a flat wire covered angle stripper which engages the tummer and a main cylinder; said second main cylinder which is covered with card clothing; a plurality of sets of stock working rolls engaging said second main cylinder each set including a worker and a stripper; a fancy;

and a doifer adapted to clear the second main cylinder.

5. The combination in a coupled up set of cards having a plurality'cf main cylinders; of feeding mechanism for the first main cylinder; with said first main cylinder; a Worker and a stripper-engaging the first main cylinder; 21 flat wire covered tummer adapted to clear the first main cylinder and engaging a second maincylinder; a flat wire covered angle stripper which engages the trimmer and a, main cylinder; said second main cylinder Which is covered with card clothing; a Worker and a stripper engaging said second main cylinder; and a doffer adapted to clear the second main cylinder.
