BURIAL CASKET.

It is the object of my invention to provide a burial casket so constructed that it may be arranged in such manner as to depart from the funeral effect incident to burial caskets as heretofore made.

To accomplish this Iconstruct the casket in novel manner and provide novel means whereby the casket is arranged in imitation of a day bed upon which the body is capable of being arranged in the attitude of sleep.

It is the object of my invention, further, to provide the side walls of the casket with movable upper sections for exposure of the body receiving cavity in the casket; and, further, to so drape the casket as to hide the casket portions thereof, and soarrange both sides of the casket as to produce the effect of a bed onwhich the body reposes.

The invention will be further readily understood from the following description and claims, and from the drawings, in which latter:

The body of the casket comprises side walls 11, which at both sides of the casket have gaps 12 arranged therein, arranged to be filled by movable side wall sections 13, movable with relation to the rigid portions of the side walls so as to be placed in sidewise unobstructing relation at both sides of the body receiving cavity 14: in the casket. The casket is also provided with end walls 15.

The gaps in the respective rigid side walls are preferably shorter than the full length of the side walls, the upper parts of the side walls having end portions 16, whose inner ends preferably slope downwardly and inwardly, as shown at 17. The movable upper side wall sections have complemental ends 18. These movable sections are shown as hinged by hinges 19 to the fixed portions of the side walls, and as arranged to be folded downwardly for being droopingly suspended at both sides of the casket, as shown for instance in Fig. 1. a

Drapery 31 is arranged to be received across the cushion support, through the gaps at both sides of the casket, and draping at the outside of the inovablesections of the side walls and the handles, as well as along the sloping ends of the gaps, avoiding sharp or protruding corners under the drapery, the drapery also preferably extending across the tops of the fixed end portions of the side walls and the end walls, being draped over said end walls and the handles thereon and preferably entirely hiding the casket.

The fixed end portions 16 of the side walls and the upper portions of the end walls form end spaces at the respective ends of the casket over which the drapery is preferably located, and these end spaces are arranged to receive pillows 32, 33, which are adjustable endwise of the casket in said end spaces for adjusting the distance between them for accommodating bodies of different lengths in the casket. These pillows form rests for the head and feet respectively of the body. The pillows are provided withside tabs 34:, 35, at each end of the pillows, which tabs are draped over the respective ends of the side walls of the casket at both sides thereof and aid in forming a pleasing effect. 4

In my improved device the casket, when arranged for receiving the body, is changed into a form in imitation of a day bed, on Which the body is laid in imitation of a pos ture of sleep, the movable sections of the side walls of the casket being placed in unob structing relation, so as to simulate a flat bed at both sides of the casket, and for exposing both sides of the draped body in the casket, giving the body an elevated appearance as if reposing on top of a bed, in contradistinction to the funereal efiect produced in cas- The inside faces 3 kets as heretofore constructed in which the body was sunk into the casket.

The lid 38 is preferably removable from the body of the casket, and is removed during viewing of the body in the casket. The lid is arranged to be fastened in place by usual fastening means, when attached to the body of the casket, for locking the lid to the body of the casket.

The inner face of the lid is provided with usual lining 39. The lid has an upwardly extending dome 40 for providing ample cavity 41 under the lid for accommodation of the bodyin the casket. The cavity 41 is of greater height than the height of the movable side wall sect-ion 13, as shown in Fig. 1.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

A burial casket comprising a body portion having rigid end walls of full height and substantially the height of said rigid median portions of partial height, said body-support located between said walls, each of said side walls thus formed provided with a gap above said rigid median portion thereof of partial height between said sloping inner ends, movable sections for both said side walls, each of said movable sections provided with sloping outer ends complemental to said sloping inner ends, a removable lid provided with an upwardly extending dome above said bodysupport, the inner space of said dome being higher than the height of said movable sections, and releasable securing means between said lid and said body-portion.
