My invention relates to signs.

In accordance with my invention, I provide a sign which may be detachably mounted in a secure manner, upon the back of a pew, chair or the like, for indicatingthat the same, or a portion thereof, is reserved. The device is extremely simple and may be quickly and conveniently manipulated, in placing the same in position, or removing the same. When the device is not in use, its elements are arranged substantially flat and, therefore, occupy very little space.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration, is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 designates the body portion of the sign which is preferably formed of aluminum. The edges of the body portion are rolled for producing tubular beads 11, as shown. The numeral 12 designates the inscription or legend carried by the body portion 10 and embodies letters preferably stamped or pressed out of the material of the body portion 10, so that they are raised. These letters are preferably finished with black enamel,

13 and 1 1, preferably formed of resilient wire. These jaws are also preferably covered with rubber tubing 15, so that they will not scratch the pew or the like, to which they are applied. The U-shaped 14 has its vertical arms 15 bent laterally to provide curved portions 16, engaging about the bead or flanges 17 of the back 18 of the pew. The upper ends of these curved portions 16 are bent into coiled springs 19 mounted upon trunnions. 20, These trunnions have their inner ends extend 9 1 ing through openings 21, Figure 0, and are frictionally held within the tubular bead 11, at the bottom of the body portion 10. The coiled springs 19 are extended in the form of arms 22, having hooked ends 28, engaging through openings 24, in the bead 11, and eX- tending into the bead, as shown. The upper ends of the co-acting jaw 13 extend through openings 25 in the horizontal bead 11, and are bent at a right angle, providing portions 26, held within the bead.

WVhen it is desired to apply the sign to the back of the pew or the like, the movable jaw 14; is shifted away from the jaw 13, and the two jaws are arranged upon the opposite side of the back 18, the curved portions 16 engaging over the bead 17. The body portion 10 of the Sign is thus securely held upon its support, in an upright position, whereby it may be readily seen.

It is to understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described, is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention, or the scope of the subjoined claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a sign of the character described, a body portion for carrying the sign characters, a generally U-shaped jaw attached to the body portion, trunnions attached to the body portion, and a co-acting generally U- shaped jaw having sides bentto provide coiled springs mounted upon the trunnions, the ends of the sides being attached to the body portion.

2. In a sign of the character described, a body portion for receiving sign characters and provided at its ends and adjacent to its bottom with horizontal trunnions, a generally U-shaped resilient jaw having sides which are bent upon themselves between their ends to provide coiled springs, the ends of the sides forwardly of the coiled springs being attached to the body portion, and a co-acting generally U-shaped jaw attached to the bottom of the body portion.

3.
