The object of this invention is to provide a device for feeding cups or containers to a 'machine for filling them with ice cream or Fig. 3 a plan view of the general arrange-' ment of the machine.
As will be seen by these drawings the nested pile of cups 1 is supported in a magazine 2, which is preferably of angle iron, and is supported at a'suitable angle in relation to the machine such that the cups will tend to descend therein by gravity, while they can be conveniently placed in position and are not liable to be disarranged by any vibration during the working of the machine.
At a suitable position in relation to the lower end of magazine :2 a stop pin 3 is arranged on which the nested pile of cups rests until the lowermost one is to be removed. Such stop pin 3 is preferably mounted eccentrically as shown so as to be adjustable on a lever 1 which is operated to move forwards and backwards in any suitable manner as for instance by means of pinion 5 engaging with sector 6 on lever 7, the position of which is controlled by cam 8 mounted on the main driving shaft 9 of the machine. The cam 8 causes the lever 'to move from the position shown in Fig. 1, where stop pin 3 is supporting the pile of nested cups, to that shown in Fig. 2 where such pin is out of the way.
While in the latt r position the pile of cups, with the exception of the lowermost one, is supported by a clamp 10 of semicircular form, which surrounds the outer part of the pile and is caused to move inwards to clamp such pile when the pin 3 is moved away from below. The clamp has a lip 11 which engages below the shoulder 12 formed on the cup with which it engages, so that the whole pile is supported while the pin 3 is away. The necessary movement to cause the clamp 10 to come into operation and to release the pile when required may be obtained in any suitable way, that shown consisting in mounting the clamp on a lever 13 operated by ca n 14 on main shaft 9.
In order to separate the lowermost cup in the pile 1 from the remainder a forked lever 15 is employed, same being pivoted to the outer end of lever4land so partaking in the to and fro movement thereof. The two arms of the lever 15 are spaced at such a distance apart that they will pass on either side of the cups in the pile, and they are each formed with a lip or ledge 16 projecting inwards, the parts being relatively so disposed that such lip or ledge 16 will during the first part of the movement pass over the upper edge of the lowermost cup in the pile. Lever 15 is formed with a slot 17 with which engages a pin 18 mounted on a stationary part of the machine, the eifect of the shape of such slot being that lever 15 will be caused to turn downwards in relation to the lever 4 which carries it, whereby on the continued movement of the parts after lip or ledge 16 has passed over the top of the cup the latter will be pushed downwards and separated from the remainder of the pile.
This will deposit the separated cup onto a table or conveyor 19' suitably disposed in relation to the parts described, and to which an intermittent movement may be imparted in any suitable manner to carry the separated cups to the filling or other device.
The operation of the complete arrangement may be briefly described as follows A pile of cups 1 having been placed in the magazine 2, when the machine is first started the parts will be in the position shown in Fig. 1, with the stop pin 3 supporting the lowermost cup. As then the lever 4: is advanced such stop pin will leave the cup and the clamp 10 will come into operation and hold the remainder of the pile from falling. The continued movement of lever at will bring the lips of forked lever 15 over the upper edge of the lowermost cup, and the latter will be lowered onto the conveyor 19, which will at once move it away. On its return movement lever a carrying forked lever 15 with it will bring stop pin 3 back again to the position shown in Fig. 1, and clamp 10 will be released to allow the pile of cups to drop until the lowermost one rests on such stop pin.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In combination, in a cup feeding device, an inclined open-sided magazine for the nested pile of cups, an adjustable movable rest on Wl1l0l1 such nested pile of cups rests, a cam controlled lever for operating such rest, and arranged for actuation by a revoluble member of a machine in connection With Which such cup feeding device may be used, a circular clamping device at the lower end of the maga- Zinc and a mechanism for causing same to alternately release and seize and hold the nested pile of cups, a separating device for removing the lowermost cup from the pile, and means for operating such separating de- Vice, as set forth.
