l/Vith these and other objects in view the invention includes an elongated drill holder extension member arranged to hold a drill at substantially right angles to its axis and in a terminal portion thereof. A springpressed member mounted on the elongated holder is adapted to be moved along the holder to thereby cause a forked looking member to move into and out offengagement with a circumferential groove formed in the stem or shaft of the dental tool.

Referring to the drawings for a more detailed description of the invention, an eXtension drill holder is shown in which a hollow shell portion 10 provided with a knurled hand gripping portion 11 is adapted to be fitted over the end of a dental drill lhead or hand piece. TWithin they shell 10 an operating shaft 12 is adapted to be received in the chuck of the main drill holder in order to transmit power from the main drill holder to the extension member mounted thereon. A jointed connection 13 between the shell 10 and a main frame member 14 provides for the arrangeu ment of the part 14 at any one of four different angles with relation to the axis of the shell portion 10; Vithin thev jointed connection 13 universal connection 15 provides for the transmission of power from'the shaft 12 to a shaft 16 journaled in the member 14. v
The forward eiidof the member 16 is provided with a bevel pinion 17 meshing with a corresponding bevel pinion 18 formed on a chuck 19 which receives the stem or shaft 20y of the tool 21 being used. The chuck 19y is journaled in the forward' portionY 22 of the section 14 and extends substantially at right angles to the axis of the driving shaft 16.
In order to hold the tool stem 2O in its seat in the chuck 19 a sleeve 23 is slidably mounted on the extension member 1'4 and is provided at its forwardcnd with Va forked member 24 adapted to engage with a groove 25 Vformed inthe stem 2O of the tool near the upper eX- vtremity thereof, The sleeve 23 is norlnally pressed into its forward or locking position shown in Figure 2 by the action of a coil spring 26 placed between the rearmost eX- tremity of the sleeve'23`and a flange or slioulder 27 formed on the rearward end of the member 14 and included in the joint structure 13. i

In addition to the advantages obtained in the improved lock and general design described, 'an impervious surface is presented throughout the extent of the forward portions of the device which include tight and close joints which function to exclude the entrance of moisture into the position of the operatingl parts. This feature is an important one in the operation of devices of this general character as will be clear.
I/Vhat is claimed is In a dental tool holder, an elongated body portion having a drive shaft journaled therein, an enlarged head member atone end of the body portion, a tool-holding chuck journaled in the head member and extending substantially at right angles to the axis ofthe body portion, the head member being-provided with an opening in its rearward face, alongitudinally movablesleeve member enclosing said body portion and provided with a forked locking device at its forward eX- tremity, said locking device entering said opening to engage and lock a tool lin said chuck, a flange at the rear extremity of the body portion, and a spring enclosing the body portion between said flange and the rearmost extremity of said sleeve, said springact- Y ing normally to press the sleeve forwardly into locking position.
