The complete feeding apparatus consists of one or more feeding devices which are constructed as follows:
The main body or holder 1 is U shape and slides upon the controlling bars and is closed by the plate 2 which is attached by means of four countersunk screws. In the said main body are formed two apertures 3 and 4 adapted to receive a pin 5 which securesthe main body to one or the other of the said bars. At the lower part of the main body is formed the dovetail slot 6 in which is slidable the ejector body 7, a stud 8 being employed as an abutment for the said ejector body 7 and is received in a recess 8 in the ejector body. In the body of the ejector 7 is formed a lateral groove 9 for guiding the closing abutment 10. he stud 11 is mounted at the centre of the groove 9 and a inilled nut 12 mounted on the stud 11 serves to hold the abutment 10 in position after the same has been adjusted.
A retractile spring 13 is secured at one end (by the screw 14) to the ejecting device 7 and` at the other end to a stud 15 mounted on the main body 1, and said spring serving to hold the ejector body 7 upon the stud 8 in the normal position, and brings itl back should it be deflected by accidental circumstances.
The apparatus further comprises a main controlling bar 16, which is made of steel and is slidable in bearings 17 and 18. On its left hand side is mounted the forked holder 19 carrylng a roller 20 which rotates upon its axle 21 which is held in place by the pin 22 and the washer23. Upon the turned part ofthe device adjacent the bearing 17 areslidably mounted the rings 24 and 25 serving as abutments for the retractile s ring 26. At the right hand end and in the flrdt part7 in the interior, is disposed the stud 27 which serves to bring the auxiliary bar into the proper position. lThe stop-p1ece 28 mounted in the ar 16 and secured thereto by the countersunk screw 29 and a centering member 30, has a tapered face28, which contacts with the supporting frame of the feeding device, not
shown. In the upper face of the bar 16, suitable apertures are formed for the insertion of the stud 5.
An auxiliary steel bar 39 is employed in the said apparatus; the-'left hand end of said bar belng disposed adjacent the bearing 17. The
right hand end of the bar is provided with an y extension 17 and to which is secured a tempered steel plug 31 by means of the pin 32. Upon the bearin 18 is'mounted a washer 33 servlng as an a utment for the spring 34 which encircles the extensions 17 and serves to control the bar 39.- In the bar is formed a groove 35, and coacting therewith is a stud 27 which serv'es to bring the said bar into the initialposition. At the upper part there .are
provided suitable apertures 27 engaging the studs 5.
The bearings 17 and 18 are secured to the main frame by the round headed screws 36.
A cam 37controls the main bar 16 ;v said cam being actuated at each revolution either by the lever actuated by the nailing head of the nailing device, or by means of bevel pinions actuatedby the driving shaft.
The double cam 38 serves' as an abutment .by means of its projections and is actuated,
for each l@ revolutionfby a lever operated by the nailinc` head cfr/the nailing device, or by means of23 bevel pinions driven by the main power sha-ft. The said cam is utilized only when .it is desired to alternately place a different number` of nails duringy each revolution. .In a given position, when the recesses in the said cam coincide with ythe plug 31, the two bars 16 and 19 are controlled by the camI 37 and .the spring 34. In the other position, when the projecting part of the said cam 38 coincides with the plug 31, the bar 39 will be held in the fixed position.
The main bar 16 Will be actuated by the cam 37 which abuts upon the roller 20, and the stud 37 slides in the groove in the bar 39. In this movement, only the feeding elements which are mounted upon the main bar 16 Will be actuated.
The main body of the ejecting device 7 is made of tempered steel. The adjustable closing stop-piece 10 is also made of tempered steel; these two parts are secured together, so that there will be no dropping of the nails in any position of the apparatus.
IVith the use 0f the above-mentioned safety device, there will be not risk of gripping or of breakage of the ejector point 7, or of the ejector itself, or of the other parts of the apparatus.
Since the abutment contact takes place above the heads of the nails, the latter may have irregular edges Without interfering With the proper operation o-f the apparatus. An essential feature consists in the fact that the main body of the nail con'ies into contact with the said closing and abutment element.
I claim:
1. A nail feeding mechanism for nailing machines comprising a plurality of race ways, means for feeding nails therefrom including U-shaped members for cooperation with the race Ways, bars supporting said U-shaped members, means for securing said U-shaped members to either of the bars, ejectors slidably connected with the U-shaped members, means for limiting the sliding movement of the ejectors, closing abutments for said race Ways slidably adjustable 0n the ejectors, and
means for holding the closing abutments in adjusted positions.
2. A nail feeding mechanism for nailing machines comprising a. plurality of race Ways, means for feeding nails therefrom including U-shaped members for cooperation with the race Ways, bars carrying said U-shaped inembers, means for securing said U-shaped nie-mbers to either one of the bars, ejectors slidably connected with the U-shaped members, abutments carried by the U-sliaped members,
Vmeans for normally holding the ejectors yieldably engaged with the abutments, 'and closing abutments for the race Ways slidably connected with the ejectors.
3. A nail feeding mechanism for nailing machines comprising a plurality of race Ways, means for feeding nails therefrom including U-shaped members for cooperation with the race Ways, bars carrying said U-shaped members, cover plates for holding said members on said bars, means for securing said U- shaped members to either one of the bars, a groove formed in the bottom portion of each of said U-shaped members, abutments disposed at the ends of said grooves, ejectors slidable in said grooves and spring held in engagement with said abutments, and having lateral grooves, closing abutments for said. race Ways receivedin said lateral grooves, and adjustable therein, and means for retaining said closing abutments in their adjusted positions.
