Description

E. E. WALKER.
Shell for Ordnance.
WITNESSES VENTOR ATTORNEYS l NITED GEORGE EDWIN WALKER, OF REYNOLDS, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHELLS FOR ORDNACE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,8l3, dated October 11,1875; application led July 24,1e75.
To all Iwhom it may concern Be it. known that I, GEORGE EDWIN WALK- ER, of Reynolds, in the county ot' Taylor and State of Georgia, have invented a new and valuablelmprovernentinShooting-Shells; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this speeiication, and to the letters and igures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation ot a longitudinal central section ot' my shell, and Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.-
This invention has relation to projectiles for ordnance; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of a shell having a cylindrical body with a conicalbore recess, a sabot having a tenon, and fuse-groove entering the bore near its base, as will be hereinat ter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the cylindrical body of the shell. somewhat tapering in front to the month ay of the bore l), which is in the torni ot a conical 'rustum, the bottom c ol" the bore being solid. Through the wall ot' the body, near the bottom ot' the bore, is made the fuse-hole d, from the external opening ot' which to the end of the shell-wall in rear is formed a Afuse-groove, e. c is a shoulder atthe outer end ot the bore b, affording a irin support for the partition o, resting and supported trinly thereon. The partition o is removable, and separates the chambers containing the powder and ball. l.; designates the cap, pointed exterior-ly and concave within, designed to close the month ot' the bore with a reasonably close fit to retain the shell-charge until the ignition ofthe powder. In the rear ot' the shell-body a recess, C, is formed for the reception of a tenoinf, ot' the wooden sabot D, or other extension ot' light material, in the side of which is made a groove, e', to correspond with the groove c. The shell is charged by introducing the vpowder into the bore, then a sufijcient quantity of. shot, over which is placed wadding, and theI whole covered in by the cap or point. Before the 'introduction ot' the charge, the time-fuse z should be inserted through the opening d,
' its exterior end being laid in the fuse-groove c c to the rear end of the shell, and confined in this position by any suitable means.
rIhis shell is not designed to explode when discharged by the tin'le-t'usc in the air, but lo shoot the shot contained within it out o1" the bore in front, scattering these missiles with increased velocity forward ot' the shell itself. The lightness ot' the rear end serves to keep the mouth ofthe bore to the front in the llight ot' the projectile., and when the shell begins to descend the front cnd will dip and the discharge will take place in the direction ot' the earth, more or less, according to the length of the time-fuse.
Should the shell become embedded in the earth point l'oremost before thc ignition of its charge, then it will become an explosive shell by rea-son ofthe obstruction against the cap.
lVhat I-claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Ihe cylindrical shwell A, provided with the recess O, sabot l), having the tenon f, amical bore I), and fuse-grom'es c'c, the latte-r entering the bore near its base, substantially as described, and for the purposey set forth.
ln testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed/my name in the presence ol' two witnesses.
GEORGE E. WALKER.
