This pressing machine and work conveyer comprises generally, a pressing machine including cooperating pressing elements, one
of which is movable ltoward and from the 5 other, a work conveyer comprising oppositely movable trays-movable from the front side of the machine to and from between the pressing elements, one tray being movable between the elements While the other is moving from' out between the elements; mechanism for actuating the movable element to close and open the same; mechanism for actuating the trays; operator-operated or manually oper-l ated means for controlling the operations of said mechanisms, an interlock between the operating 'means for the movable pressing element, and the actuating mechanism for the trays to prevent the operation of the tray mechanismwhen the pressing elements are closed, an interlock bet'ween the actuating mechanism for the trays and the operating means for the pressing machine to prevent .closing of the pressing machine when the trays are being actuated, `and an interlock between the manually operated -means to prevent simultaneousv ,operation thereof.
The pressing machine here shown comprises a stationary lower buck 1, a press head 2 movable l`toward and from the buck 1, the buck 1 being mounted upon a suitable frame '3, and the head 2 being carried by a yoke or lever 4, pivoted at 5 between its ends to a standard 6 rising from the frame, the yoke being provided with a counter 'weight 7 at its rear end which tends to open the press by gravity. The actuating mechanism is also connected to the `rear arm of the yoke or 8 and 9 ldesignate the trays movable from the front side of theframe to and from between the buck 1 and head 2, these traysbeing movable along tracks individual to the trays, the tracks being arranged at their inner ends to support the trays on the buck 1 or at the 'same level and the tracks being so shaped as of any suitable size, form and construction,
and as here shown each comprises a suitable marginal framelO or 11, and a web y13 or 14 secured to the frame as by .lacing 15. The trays are provided at their corners with rollers 18, 21 to lit the tracks, the rollers 18 at the front corners of the tray 8 running along one set of the tracks and the rollers 21 at the rear corners o'f said tray 8 running along 1another set of tracks.

Each of the tracks 15a on which the rear rollers 21 of the tray 8 moves is elevated at its front end and provided with a lift portion 27 approaching the front end portion, and the tracks 16 on which the rollers 18 of the front corners of the tray 8 travel is provided with a-lift portion at 28 between vits ends and with a horizontal por'-4 tion 29 between the lift 28 and the front inclined portion. The tracks15, 16 are provided with depressions or. seats 3() at their rear liminary to removing the tray from the buck.
Theatrack 17 is substantially level with the exception of the depressions and of its front inclined end, and the lift portions 27 land 28 of the tracks 15a and 16 are arranged to lift the tray'8 upwardly out of the plane of the tray 9 passing-along the track 17, so that, the trays pass each other during their movement to and from the pressing elements, the rollers 24of the tray 9 passing under the bridges 20 ofthe tray 8.
The mechanism foractuating the press head 2 comprises an intermittently movable shaft 32 having an eccentric or crank 33 at one end, a connecting rod 34 mounted at one end of the crank, and having its other end pivoted at 35 to a power lever 36, which actuates'toggle mechanism consisting oflinks 37, 38. The link 37 is pivotcd at one end at 39 to the yrear arm of the yoke or lever 4, and the link 38 is pivoted at 40 to the frame, the link 38 being here shown as formed rigid with the power lever 36.
As the construction of this toggleand actuatingVA mechanism per se, forms no part of this invention, further-description is thought to be unnecessary. l
The shaft 32 makes a half revolutie/1 during each intermittent operation. This shaft 32 isjournalled in a suitable housing; 41 carried by the main frame, and is actuated from a constantly running motor means through a suitable periodic clutch contained within the housing 41. The motion is here illustrated as transferred from the motor means to the uic dowel pin 4721 and the motion -of the clutch section'44is'yieldingly transmitted to the .pins
through a pressure ring 48 thrusting against shoulders on the pins, andl springs as the spring 49 interposed between the` pressure ring and the clutch section 44. The springs 49 permit the pins to yield during shifting of the clutch section 44 in case the pins are 'not initiallyv in alinement with the'holes 46 of the worm gear 43. The ends of the pins 45 and also the holes 46 are tapered to effect a ready release of the pins when the clutch section 4.4 isshifted out. A main spring 50 -is arranged to act on the clutch section 44 to shift it out when the force tending to hold it in is discontinued.
The clutch section 44 is held in its fin position in order-that the shaft may make a half-*revolution after the clutch is manu- 1 ally shifted to its in position by suitable means here shown as a cam ring 51 carried within the housing 41 concentrically with the 130 shaft 32, and having diametrically opposite notches 52. `The cam coacts'vvith diametrically opposite followers 53 on the clutch sec; tion 44. The followers 53 are normally located in thenotches 52.vv and when 'the clutch whereupon the spring 50 of the clutch thrusts the clutch to its out position.
The clutch section 44 is shifted to its in position by operator-operated means, termed for convenience manually operated means. This manually operated means comprises 'a rock shaft `54 having a handle lever 55, a
rocky arm 56 mounted on the rock shaft 54I and coacting with the rock arm 57 on a shaft 5.8, the shaft 58 having a shifter arm 59 thrusting against the end of the hub ofthe clutch section 44. The rock arm 56 is provided with a` pawl 60, Fig. 7, which coacts with a `shoulder or tooth 61 on the rock arm 57 in such a way that depressing ofthe hand lever causes the shaft 54 to rock in a. counter clockwise direction, and the pawl 60 is broughtv into engagement with'the shoulder 6l and to actuate the lever 57 in aclockwise direction. 'The pawl 60 when at the end of its movement passesclear of the shoulder 61, so that, the clutch cannot' be held .in by holding down onthe .handle 55, and the handle 55 must be operated each time that the clutch sect-ion 44 is thrown in i The weight `of the arm 56 and also the action of the'spring 50 returns the parts of the manually operated mechanism to their starting position* `During the return movement ofthe roc'k arm 56 the pawl 60 ratchets past the shoulder 61V.
Suitable adjusting means as set screws 62l and 63 are provided for the pawl 60 and the shoulder 61.
The actuating means for the trays 8 and 9 comprises an intermittently rotatable shaft 64, Figs-1 and 6` journalled in a clutch housfing 65 suitably supported by the frame of the machine, and'motion transmitting means between the shaft 64' and the trays'. The motion transmitting means betweenA the shaft 64 and the trays 8, 9. comprise oppositely arranged crank arms 66 and'67 on said shaft 64, rock arms 68, 69.1uounted respectively at their lower ends on shafts 70, 71 journalled in a suitable fixed base 72, and connected at their upper ends to the trays 8, 9 and links 73, 74 connecting the "cranks 66 and 67 respectively with the rock arms 75 and 76 mounted respectively upon the shafts 70, 71.

Upon depression of the handle 80, the shaft 79 is rocked and through the` rock army 81, link 82 and lever or arm 83, the clutch section within ythe housing 65 is thrown in, so that the shaft 64 makes ar half revolution, moving one of the trays 8 or 9 into position between the buck 1 and head 2 andthe other tray from between the buck 1 and head 2 to the front end of the tracks. During one half revolution, the tray 8 is carried into pressing position and the tray 9 out of pressing position, and during the next half revolution,
the tray 9 is carried into pressing position and the tray 8 out of pressing positiom the tray'8 owing to the lifts 27 and 28 in the lll() tracks 15a and 16 passing over the tray 9 y traveling along the tracks 17. y.
The interlock beteen the actuating' mech-f' anism for thehead 2 andthe manually operated controlmechanisln for controllingr t-he actuation of ,the trays to prevent actuation of the trays when the head 2 is closed, as here shown comprises a shield movable with a portion of the actuating mechanism for the head 2,`into the path of a part associated withthe manually operated means `for the clutch mechanism controlling the trays 8 and 9, the shield being out of the path -of said part when the head 2 is open.
As here illustrated, the shield is carried b v the power arm 36 and comprises a rock arm 85, Fig.`1, carried on the lever 36 and having a portion 86'arranged to extend into the path of a rockarm 87 on .the operating shaft 79. when the lever 36 is depressed.
The interlock between the actuating meehanism for the trays and the manually oper i ated mechanism for controlling the head 2, to
prevent closing of the head when the trays are in motion, comprises a shield movable with a part of the actuating means for the trays and coacting With a part movable With the manually operated mechanism for throvvl' ing the clutch section 44 when the shaft 64 is being rotated. This interlock 'as here "shown comprises a'shield or disk 88, Figs. 1,
9 and' 10 mounted on the shaft G4' and rotatable therewith and having diametrically opposite notches 89, and a rock arm 90- on the operating shaft 54 for the clutch section 44.

This interlocking mechanism is illustrated in Figs. 4, 11 and 12 and includes alocking bar 92 which is shiftable endyvisely'iny one direction by the operation of the handle 55 and in the other direction by the operation -ofthe handle 80, the bar being arranged normally in neutral position and having spaced apart shoulders 93 and 94each arranged to be actuated by a part operated by one of the handles to shift the bar from neutral and positionto lock the other handle.
y As best seen in Fig. 4, the front ends of the l shafts 54 and 79 are mounted in a bar 95 supported on the frame 90 which supports the front ends of the tracks for the trays 8, 9, and
i .the locking bar 92 is shiftable along the rear side ofthe liar95, it being provided vwith slots 961 for receivingthe shafts 54 and 79, which slots permit the endwvise movement ofA the locking bar 92, Fig. 12.
The shafts 54 and 79 have rock arms 97 and 98 thereon, which actuate cam levers 99 and 100 pivoted at 101 and 102 to the bar 95, these cams being arranged to coact with the pins 93, 94. The rock arms 97 and 98 are connected to the cam levers by pin and slot connections.
Normally the cams are arranged in neutral position relatively to the pins 93, 94 so' that, either handle can be operated, both the cams occupying an clevated'position similar to thatv occupied by the cam 100 at the left in Figs. 4,

Assuming that the presshead is open, the operator may actuate either the handle lever 55 to cause the press head to close, or he may actuate the lever to cause the traysto shift. Upon the operating of' the lever 55 to close the machine, the cam 99 is moved into the position shown in Figures 4 'and 11 and hence the lift portion 103 thereof is pressed against the pin 93, thrusting the bar 9.2 to the left and carrying the pin 94 farther under the cam 100. This movement of the bar to the left also carries the pin 93 onto the 'dwell portion 104. The lever 80 cannot be.
now operated to actuate the cam and cause the vactuation of the trays, as the bar 92 is prevented from sliding` movement due to the fact that the pin 93 shoulders against the dwell portion 104 of the cam 99. y
Assuming that the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1, that is, the press head 2 is open and the operator operates the hand lever 80 to shift the trays then thecam 100 asso` ciated with the lever 80 shifts the bar 92 to the right and the bar locks the lever 55 from being shifted due to the fact that the pin 94 thrusts against the dwell portion of the cam 100.
Thus the interlock consisting of the shieldA 80 and arm 87 prevents operation of the trays when the head 2 is closed. andthe interlock consisting of the disk 88 and arm 90 prevents closing of the head 2jvhile the trays are in motor 106 is a one half H. The trays 13, 14 are preferably provided with means for holding portions of 'the Work --head 2 than to actuate the trays 8, 9, andtheV on the trays, While the Work is being straightp ened out or stretched over other portions of the trays, such means being automatic in its action and releasable when the finished Work is removed from the tray.
This lmeans comprises small pins or hooksv secured to the tray and having laterally turned pointed ends, and usually small blocks of carding 108 are attached to the fabricl of the trays, so that when the articleor Work is engaged with the pins of one or moreof these blocks of carding, other portions can be stretched or smoothed out over thc parts of lao the tray provided with'the remaining blocks of the carding.' These pins provide an anchor to pull against while arranging the work.
As here shown blocks of carding 108 are attached to the web ofthe traysl 13, 1/1 at spaced apart points along the rear margin and along the side'margins. Thus the operator can arrange the Work on the tray, and if necessaryl engage or anchor one end portion on' the blocks of carding at one end of the tray, and smooth out or slightly stretch the work, pulling against such cardi'ng with which the work is engaged. The blocks of carding as willbe understood, consists of flexible base strips 109, and small vbent wires or pins 110 therein, and as the construction l of carding-for use for other purposes is well known, further description thereof is thought to be unnecessary.

The combination of a pressing machine comprising coacting pressing elements, one movable toward and from the other, a work conveyer comprising oppositely movable trays movable to and from the pressing elements, 'one being movable to pressing position when the other is moving out of pressing position, and. means for actuating the trays comprising an intermittently*rotatable shaft, oppositely arranged crank arms thereon and connections between the crank arms and the trays, said connections comprising rocking levers'coniiected respectively to the trays and means for connecting the cranks and said levers, motor means for actuating the shaft and means for controlling the` intermittent actuation of the shaft by said motor means.

The combination of a pressing machine comprising coacting pressingelements, one movable toward and from theother, a work conveyer comprising avtray movable to and from between the pressing elements, motor means,motion transmitting connections between the motor means and the movable pressing element including a movable member and motion transmitting means between the motor means and the tray, the first mentioned connections including an intermittently actuated manual means tor controlling the intermittent actuation of said pressing element by the motor means, manual means for controlling the intermittentactuation of the motion transmitting connection vto the tray, a shield carried by said movable member and a part movable with the manual means for the tray, the shield being movable with `the movable member by which itis carried into position to obstruct the actuation of said part. when the pressing element is iii-closed position.

The combination of a pressing machine comprising coacting pressing-elements, one movable toward and from tlieother, a work conveyer comprisinga tray movable to and from the pressing element, motor means, connections between the motor means and the movable pressing element including an intermittently movable member, connections between the motor means andthe tray inbe obstructed by said shield when said second` member is being actuated.

connections between the motor means'and theniovable pressing element including an intermittently movable member, connect-ions between tlie motor means and the tray including a second intermittently movable member, manual means for controlling the intermittent actuation of the first member from the motor means, manual means for controlling the intermittent actuation of the second member from the motor means, shields movabley with said members, a part associated with the manual means cont-rolling the operation of the tray and arranged to obstruct by the shield associated with the rst member when the movable pressing element is closed and a part associated with the manual means 'controlling theinovement of the tray and arranged to be obstructed by the second shield when the tray is being actuated.

The combination of a pressing machine comprising coactng pressing elements, one movable toward and from the other, a work conveyei1 comprising a traymovable to and from thepressing element, motor means, connections between the motor means andthe movable pressing element including an intermittently movable member, connections between the motor means and the tray including a second intermittently movable member, manual means for controlling the intermittent actuation of the first member from the motor means, manual means for controlling tlie'intermittent actuation of the second member from the motor means, shields movable -with said members, a part associated with the manual means controlling the operation of the tray and arrangedy to obstruct by the shield associated withthe first member when the.
movable pressing element is closed a partasso- 'ciated with the manual means controlling the movemeiitof the tray and arranged to be obstructed by the second shield when the tray is being actuated, and an interlock between the manual means for preventing simultaneous operation of such manual means.
