To allw'homitmay comm:
Be it known that I, Ame Comom, a sub residin at 255 dgecombe Avenue, New York in t e county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and -provements in Machines for FeedingQCutting, and Sewing Fabrics, lowing is a specification.
My inventlon 'relates'to. a new im:

Fig. 22 is a perspective view of the completed powder pu v The power for driving the various parts of the machine is derived from a pulley 1,. which can be connected by a belt to any suitable source of po fly-wheeL' The pu 11s}! 1 is rigidly mounted e shaft 2has an interior pulley 3 integral therewith, as can be seen ln-Figs. 11-14, and the flywheel -1 if locked to the shaft 2 and to the interior pulley 3 by means of the nut N, Bind shaft 2 has an enlargement adjacent nut N as can planview. of the feeding wer and also acts as a be seen in Fig. 12. The pulle 1 is revolved continuously together with t e shaft 2, by the source of power towhich it is connected. As shown in Fig. 1, the shaft 2 has a sleeve 5 suitably keyed thereto and held thereto by means of a nut 6, and this sleeve 5 has a worm 7, formed thereon, which cooperates with the worm-wheel 8. As can be clearly seen in Fi 2, the worm-wheel 8 is mounted upon a s aft 9 and the shaft 9 is mounted in a fixed sleeve 10 which forms a bearing. The shaft 9 is provided with ,a worm 11 and this actuates the cam shaft C by means of the worm-wheel 12. The cam shaft 0 drives nearly all the, various parts of the mechanism, but ,the sewin machine is directly driven by the sleeve '5 y means of the sprocket wheels Hand 15 connected by means of the chain 16, as shown in.
Thetwo halves of the powder puff are automatically cut from'two strips of cloth or other material ,and are fed into the mechanism in a superposed relation. The feed-' ing mechanism is shown in detail. in Figs.
15 to 18. A length of ribbon 197is prefercured to the lever-23 which oscillated.
'on the cam shaft and shown in The lever 23v is oscillated in the plane shown in Fig. 1, being integral with a sleeve 24' fastened to the shaft 25. The shaft 25 is connected to the rod 26'. The rod 26' is connected to a lever 27 operated b a cam 28 ig. 3. The general arrangement whereby the said cam 28 operates the said parts is similar to that 'shown in Fig. 5 in connection with other parts to be later described.
By the action of the parts before mentioned, the carriage 20 is reciprocated. The link 22 is not rigidly secured to the car riage 20, but it has a certain relative movement with respect thereto. This is accomplished by having the pin 22 of the link 22 movable ina slot 24 of the frame of the carriage 20-so that the pin 22; can move for a predetermined distance before it reaches the end of the slot 24, when it not-uates the carriage 20. Theobject of this-l is to release a clam whichholds the cloth against movement forwardly. The pin 22' is 'conne; ed to bar 31 which is moved independently of carriage 20 and has projections 32 and 42. The cloth clamp consists of a lever 25 pivotcompression springs 36'secured to t efore the said cloth is seized by the nipper of the carria e and feded at 26 and normally urged to revoiive in a clockwise direction by the tension sprin 2'1, shown in Fig. 16. The revolution 0% the clamping lever 25 can be prevented by means of the pawl 28', which is pivotally secured to the end of the lever 25 at 29. As shown in Fig. 15,- the clamp shaft 26 carries two toothed levers 30, one of which is shown in F ig- 17." As shownin Fig. 16, as soon as the link 22 is operated the projection 32 of bar 31 pushes the pivoted pawl 28' to raise it and keep it temporarily raised so as to release the toothed levers 30 from the cloth and permit the cloth to be fed forwardly.
As soon as the clamping 'levers,30 have been raised and while they are temporarily held in a raised position, the cloth is nipped and fed forwardly. The nipper 33 is pivotally secured-at 33' to the end of the lever 34, which is mounted upon the shaft 31. The nipper 33 is urgeddownwardly by a blade spring B secured to lever 34, so that it tends to 'assume'the position shown in Fig. 17. This-shaft 34: has cups 35 secured thereto and these are .upwardly urged by 1e carriage 20. These tend to normally cause the nippers 33 to engage-with--the cloth, but a control lever 37, having a roller or pin s0 and roller 42 and mounted upon theshaft '34, is normally held u wardly by means of a plate 38, held a justably by means of the set screws-39. The plate 38 is secured to the frame 21 so that it re mains stationary at all times.
When the carriage 20 has been moved sufficiently to the left so that th pin 40 of the control lever 37 clears the adjustable plate 38, the levers 30 having first been'raised, then the nipper 33 engages the cloth and feeds it forwardly. This is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 17. Theadjustment of the plate 38 renders it possible to regulate the amount of cloth which is fed forwardly and since the cloth at the left of the punch is positively clamped by the member 30 there is no dragging when the punch performs its action or when the carriage moves back ward. As soon as the pawl 28' passes behind 'thccnd of the projection 32, it drops into the space or slot/i1 between projections 32 and 42 of bar 31, so as to allow members 30 to clamp the cloth. As seen in Fig. 16, pawl 28' can be freely revolved counterclockwise for about as shown in dotted lines.
Upon the return movement ofthe lever 23, the carriage first remains stationary until the pin 22' has reached the right-hand side of the slot 24. Thefirst movementof the projection 42' of bar i'llywhich has an the nipper-while'the pawl28 is recited into inclined right-hand end, i --.to act upon'the roller 421of the lever 37 so as 'to release the horizontal position by the. right-hand movement of "'rojection 32, without, however raising t e cloth clamp 30.
Hence, before the carriage is-moved to the right to start a new feeding stroke, its ni per is positivelyreleased from the cloth, w 1l e the cloth is still held by the clam so 'as to prevent any backward movement t ereof. Q
The machine is now ready for the punchin operation, whereby two discs of the fa ric, together with an intermediate strip of ribbonare cut to be fed to the sewing machine. The punching or cutting mechanisrn is shown in Figs. 5', 8 and 9..
- Before the cloth is cut, the outside clamping shell 43. is caused to descend under the action of the spring 55in s ace 44, so as to clamp the fabric and rib n and hold them while the punching orv cutting opera- V tion is performed, as is clearly indicated in Fig. 8. 'Theupper cutting die is. then caused to descend and cooperate with the lower cutting die 46 so as to cut out the discs of fabric. 'The parts are guided in the guides47. Thelowcr' guide'47 is provided witha bolt 48, which enters a corresponding-groove of the shell 43, so as to-prevent it from turning. When the plunger 56 is depressed, the rod 74 and head 73 are also depressed while the rod 76- is urged downwardly by the spring 7 5, Since the head 73 slides with some friction, the spring 75 becomes compressed and rod 76 tends to revolve pawl 77. controlled by the cam shaft C, which is revolved at relatively lower speed.
The camshaft Q has a cam 80, shown in Fig. 10, and this is adapted to alternately 10 prevent or permit the revolution of thebell crank lever 81 pivoted at 82 and adapted to be actuated by the tension spring '83. In the position shown in Fig. .10, the revolution of the bell crank lever 81 is just beginning. These parts are shown on a larger scale in Fig. 13 in which the cam. 80 has been revolved further. When the bell crank lever 81 is turned, it moves a link 83' 'to the right. The link. 83' is shown in Fig. As shown in Fig. 10 the link 83' is connected by means of a pivotal connection to extension member 84 connected to the'bottom of rod 86, which passes through the sleeve 87, having a. tooth-1 ed head ;a.t its bottom as shown in-Fig. 14.
The extension 84 may be connected to the 4 said toothed head so as to revolve it in only one" direction by means of the tooth 85 shown in Fig. 14, so that when the extension 84 is revolved clock-wise inFig. 11,".
the rod86 is also revolved clock-wise and the sleeve 87 may also be revolved clockwise if its head is in mesh with member 84 as shown in Fig. 13. The tooth 85 must 5' then engage I the corresponding shoulder.
The lower position of the rod 80 and of the member 84 are shown in Fig. 14, when the toothed member 84 is out of mesh with '"sleeve 87. The sleeve 87 is provided with a projection 92 which-tends to limit the counter-clock-wise movement thereof which is produced by the compression sprin 91 shown in Fig. 12. The abutment 90 which is adjustably held in bearing mcmber'88 as shown in Figs. 13 and 14 limits the movement of member 92, so that it will not con-.
tact with pulley 3. Hence the revolution of the toothed member 85 can revolve the sleeve 87 against the force of the compres- -sion spring 91. When the sleeve 87 is revolved in the clock-wise direction as shown in Fig. 12, the extension 92 thereof is moved from the full line position to the dotted line position shown in Fig; 12, there- I byreleasing the pawl 93 which is pivotally mounted at 95, as shown in Fig. 13, so that it is then freeto engage the corresponding shoulder 96 of the internal pulley 3 of power shaft 2 as shown in F ig. 13. The pawl 93 .is actuated by a compression spring 98.
When the pawl 93 is in locked position as shown in Fig. 13, then the outer sleeve 4.- to which it is pivoted-and which has the eccentric ,50, is turned and the cutting or punching mechanism 1S operated, as shown to the shaft 2.

press the rod 86 against the action of the compression'spr'ing .102. When the rod is depressed, then as shown in Fig. 14, the member 8a is depressed so that its tooth no longer. engages with the sleeve '87 and the sleeve 87 is then snapped into the position shown in full lines in Fig. 12 by'the spring 91, so that the extension 92 will'then engage with p'awli93 and force it out of I engagement with I thepulley i connected to The carriage 79 is revolved 'by means of the camflM-Qivhicho crates to depress the pivoted lever- "an" the link V 106 which revoh'cs the segment IIOnmunted on shaft 109.-by means ofthefextension 108.,
This segment 110 has bevelteeth 107 which cooperate with corresponding bevel 'teetl'r 111 on a collar r1112 andv this collar'11'2 is adapted to engage a pawl 114 of the car}- riage 79.; The pawl ll lyis urged upwardly by a-com )ression" spring asshownjn. v
ence when the. collar 112 is revolvedin one direction it-cngages the pawl 114 and revolves hie carriage 79 for an arc. of 180 and when 'l e carriage 79 is revolved backwards, it. depresses. the pawlrll l; so as to have no effect upon the carriage.
An ordinary V-shaped pawl 12() connected to frame F and which is urged upwardly by a compression spring 121, fits into a recess of the carriage and ensures that it shall be positively held in the desired position.
When the carriage has thus been revolved 180, the two su erposed discs-of fabric which have been .orced on needles 70, and
the intermediate ribbon are tl1eu.;presented' to the action of the sewing machine which may he of any approved type.
The sewingmechanism is actuated by a belt B, carried on a pulley 115' mounted upon a shaft 116 which is actuated by a loo Ill)
bevel gear 117. driven by the shaft bf the sprocket 15. The beltll is not made too tight, so that it can slip whenever the sow ing machine must'have the mechanism thereof stopped.
The action of the sewing machine is controlled by means of the lever pivoted at 126. The lever 125 is connected by means ,of a link -12T to a control lever 128 which is actuated by a pin fitting in the cam slot 130 in a cam mounted upon cam shaft C. The lever 128 is pivoted at .64.
In order to start the sewing machine into operation the lever 125 is moved into the I r I dog D'is uppermost 'tion shown inF' 2 in dotted lines, so. that tlhepressure foot F is raised sufliclently to permitthe cloth to pass undernepth it. At the same time the stop S is J rawed'so as to permit the revolution of the pulle 131 mounted upon the same shaft as the ve' ulley '132. ,stop S is pivoted v at 133 an itiis connected'by means of the lever 134 to the bell crank lever 125.
1 After the pressure-foothas beeniraised sufficiently to allow the fabric to, pass underneeth it. the said lever 125 is now moved to the lowest of the positions 11 shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, in which the fabric is 1 sewed a comparativel long stitch as shown d in Fig. '21. e' lation of the stitc has heretofore been we -known in sewing machines, and it is accom lished by V 'vs the movement of thefeed 0 thereof, an it is desired to automatica vary thehmfth of the stitch, so that it s all be agte c ose and strong at the completion of sewing o ration, so as to firmlysecure the ends of t e stitched portion. The feed ivoted at 136 and it is actuated by the 137, which is slotted and which is connected to an eccentric 138 mounted upon 3 the shaft 139 and forming part of the sewmachine, so that b revolving the eccentrlc. the link 137 can moved to and fro. The dog D has a segmental slot 138 and the la b of the feed stroke thereof varies acco to whether the pin 139 oflink 137 'iskmovedjup or down in the said segmental i slot 138-. This is accomplished by means of the control member 140 pivoted at 141 and piotally connected at 142 to the link 143.
control member 140 is actuated by the tension ring 145, which can be adjusted by means 0 the bolt 146., The"rod 144 connected to link 143 carries an adjustable collar 148, which limits the movement thereof by contracting ,with a' cross bar of frame F.
The rod 144.- is connected to lever 125 and the cam slot 130 is of such contour that the stitch is automatically "shortened near the beginning and end thereof, as shown in Fig. .21 i g a After the sewing has been completedfthe f carriage 79 is again revolved, when the ;bot-
tom of 'pawl 77 strikes any suitable cam projection T. in the position shown in dottedlines in Fig. 2 so that it is tripped and mem- :ber56 is free to rise and remove the partially sewed article from pins and force it on=pins 70 connected to plate P. The plun er 56 then slides along the underside of plate Pjuntil it reaches the lower die when it is moved into theposition shown in Fig. 8. q
The operator causes two strips of fabr c together with an intermediate strip of ribbon to be fed to the-feeding-mechanism, shown in 15-18. Tim pieces of fabricand led hetween 'themunching devices and, firmly held there. Then the camshaft throws the clutch which connec'ts the punching mechanism and the power shaft, so that the two ieces of fabric, together with an interme iate strip of ribbon, 70 are forced upon the disc and the disc is depressed so that the pieces of fabric and the ribbon are looked upon pins 70 and the said disc 56 is held in its lowest position. The punching mechanism can be operated 7 only once to out out any two pieces of fabric.
Then the carriage is revolved so as to ,present the discs of fabric and the ribbon to the sewing mechanism while they are accurately held in place by the needle 70.
and it automatically partially sews the puff, with aregulated stitch as before explained. When the sewing is completed,'the sewing machine is stopped and'the carriage is re- 35 volved so as topresent new discs of fabric to the sewing mechanism, andto cause the pawl locking the lunger to be tripped so that the plunger ies upward, releasing the fabric from the needles and forcing it on the upper needles. The partially sewed puff is now turned inside out and the sewing 18 completed so as to prodl'n he article shown in Fig. 22.
