In the inner face of each cleat, a transverse dove-tailed groove 17 is formed which, when the cleats are together, as in Fig. 5, form a double dove tailed socket for the reception of a similarly shaped interlocking plug 23, illustrated in Fig. 4. A typical shelf is illustrated at 18, Fig. 2, the corners of which are inset at 19 to fit around one-half of the stile 10 and the ends of which carry -dove-tailed cuts 20. The shelves are placed upon the cleats 15 so that the cuts-20 register with and form a double dove-tailed opening over the similarly shaped socket in the cleats. The plugs 18 are then forced through, the dove-tailed openings in the shelves and in the cleats.
The interlocking plu s 23 contain V-shaped grooves 24 and are slig tly tapered. As they are forced into the dove-tailed openings, they act to simultaneously draw the two shelf ends together, lock the shelves to the'cleats, and
draw the .two cleats of a air together, causing the tenons 16 to snug y engage the mortises 14 in the stiles. By this construction,
the entire case of shelves is tightly locked together but can be easily disassembled by simply removing the interlocking plugs 23 which release every member of the construction.
'To avoid forming the dove-tailed grooves in the cleats and shelves, an interlocking member, such as illustrated in Fig. 7, may be used. This member consists of a U-sha ed clip 21 carryin short dowel pins 22.

The pins 22 project upwardly and are received in holes bored adjacent each extremity of each shelf in a position such as indicated in broken line at 25, Fig. 2.
lVhile a specific form of the improvement has been described and illustrated herein, it is desired to be understood that the same may be varied, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim and desire secured by Letters Patent is 1. Shelving construction comprising vertical stiles; dove-tailed recesses in the sides of said stiles; cleats having dovetailed extremities adapted to fit within said recesses; shelves arranged to be carried by said cleats; means for clamping a pair of cleats together, so that the extremities of the pair will engage in recesses on opposite sides of said stiles, said means adapted to also clamp adjoining shelves together.
2. Shelving construction comprising vertical stiles; spacing strips attached to the sides of said stiles; the extremities of said strips being spaced apart and shaped to leave dovetailed recesses; cleats; dove-tailed extremities on said cleats adapted to fit into the said recesses and shelves arranged to be carried by said cleats.
3. Shelving construction comprising vertical stiles; dove-tailed recesses in the sides of said stiles; cleats having dove-tailed ex tremities adapted to fit within said recesses; shelves arranged to be carried by said cleats; means for clamping a pair of cleats together, so that the extremities of the pair will engage in recesses on opposite sides of said stiles, said means adapted to also clamp adjoining shelves together; dove-tailed "rooves extending transversely of one face of said cleats and a double dove-tailed plug adapted to fit into co-acting grooves so as to clamp two said cleats together into opposite sides of said stiles.
4. 5.
