PAPER-HOLDING DEVICE.

My invention relates to improvements in paper holding devices which are particularly adapted for use with printing presses of the ly occur between some of the lines, or within the width of the sheet where no printing is to be done, in which spaces a grip could be applied, it is therefore the object of this invention to grip the paper at one or more of these, spaces. In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.

The numeral 1 indicates generally a Gordon press of whichQ isthe bed upon which the type is to be mounted and 3 is the platen which is fitted in the usual manner with a pair of laterally adjustable grippers 4.

The numeral 5 indicates generally a gripping finger which is preferably formed of a strip of light sheet metal pierced adjacent oneend in the form of an H to define a pair of oppositely directed tongues 6, which are outwardly bent at right angles to the thickness of the metal in the grippers as at 7 when they are again bent parallel to the finger as at 8 so as to provide a resilient engagement with the gripper so that the finger may be easily moved along the gripper to any desired position.

On the rear face of the gripping finger 5 is a pad 9 of rubber, cork or other suitable material which is adapted to be engaged by the bed 2 of the machine asit swings into contact with the platen. When it is desired to use one or more grip in fin ers ro'ectin lengthwise of the pa jaef to be printidgI pro vide a connecting bar 10 rectangular in cross section, which is adapted to be detachably secured to the grippers 4 by any suitable means as at 11, and upon this bar one or more gripping fingers 5 are mounted and are moved into such a. position as to engage the paper sheet in places where no printing is to be done.

Having thus described the several parts of my invention I will now briefly explain its use.

When it is desired to provide for gripping a sheet of paper which is to be printed with type reaching closely to its marginal edges, thegrippers 4 are moved outwardly in opposite directions beyond the width of the paper, gripping fingers5 of any suitable length are placed thereon and are moved into such a position as to avoid the type and to bear upon the margin edges of the paper as the bed 2 and its type is moved into contact with the paper sheet upon the platen. Should it be desired to grip the paper from its end, the connecting bar 10 is applied to the grippers and gripping fingers fitted thereon, which are adjusted as to position as previously described.
