INVISIBLE HINGE.

to provide a hinge oi the class specified, the
separate butts of which may be fashioned from astrip oi sheet metal of substantially the same dimensions throughout its length and the strip so folded as to form a U-shaped butt body having oppositely disposed flanges at the ends of the side members of said U- shaped body; a further object being to so fashion the side members and crosshe'ad of the body asto' fit snugly within a circular or otherwise formed recess or aperture in a stationary or swinging member or in both, and-to be retained against displacement from said member; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a hinge of the class and for the purp-osespecified which is simple in construction, etlicient' in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement'are designated by suitable reference charactersin each of the views, and in which V Fig. 1 is a face view of a stationary support and swinging member with my improved hinge mounted in connection therewith, *ith the door in open position and part of the construction being broken away.

The apertures 27" are arranged in opposite relationon the separateparts 14 as will be apparent. The link 18 is similarly rate butts is provided with projecting prongs Inc I 29 fashioned from the material of said crosshead and which project in common alinement with the bearing portions 14 of the butts and are preferably flared outwardly as seen at 30 in Fig. 2 of the drawing so that in driving the separate butts into position, the flared prongs will serve to hold the butts against displacement from the stationary support and swinging member. The outer side edges of the parts 14 are also preferably sharpened by beveling or otherwise, as seen at 31 to engage the walls of the'recesses 1( 11 to fixedly retain the bearing membersle in spaced relation and also to aid in securing the separate butts in position. It will be understood that this contact or engagement will be very slight however, and the showing in the drawing is exaggerated to clearly illustrate the feature in question.
My present invention is an improvement on that shown and described in two prior applications, Serial No. 71,539 filed. November 27, 1925, and'Serial No. 91,400 filed Marchl, 1926. The distinctive features of the present invention reside in the fashioning of the hinge butts from a strip of sheet metal of substantially the same dimensions throughout its length without any projecting parts or butts, whichresult is accomplished by coupling the bearing plates or member 14 by a crosshead 13 at the inner end of thebutt rather than by a member disposed at the sides of the bearing members asin the earlier applications. This feature not only simplifies the production but materially reduces the manufacturing costs, espe cially; in the elimination of waste material.
By virtue of'the present construction, a hinge of the class under consideration may be produced at a considerably less cost than the devices covered by the earlier applica tions. With the present construction, I also provide means for rigidly retaining the bearing portions 1d on the respective butts in the socket provided in the stationary support and swinging member. This operates to reinforce said bearing members and to retain them in, proper spaced relation, which result is also accomplished by the crosshead 13 and the flanges 21.
In Fig. 6 of the drawing, I have shown a slight modification in which I have substituted for the arc-shaped or semi-circular flanges 21, straight flanges 32 to adapt the hinge butts to apertures or recesses of square or oblong form rather than cylindrical form as shown in Figs. 1 and 4: of the drawing, it being understood that my invention is not necessarily restricted to the use of my hinge in connection with sockets of any particu} lar cross sectional form, the separate butts being fashioned to suit the desired requirements in this respect. While I have shown certain details of construction for carrying my invention into effect, it will be apparent that I am not necessarily limited to these details, and various changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its allel relation, said flanges will vabut one against the other to retain the bearing members 1 1 in spaced relation when mounted in the socket of a suitable support. It will also be apparent that the flanges 33' and 34: Willserve toreinforce the side of the hinge butt in connection with which the links of the hinge are pivoted.

A hinge butt for mounting in a cylindrical socket in a support, comprising a substantially U-shaped sheet metal body, the crosshead of said body constituting the inner end of the butt, the side members of said butt forming the bearingso-f the butt, theouter ends of said side members having laterally extending flanges, the edges of said flanges being arc-shaped in form to fit within said cylindrical socket,the side edges'of said bearing members engaging the walls of-the socket in mounting the butt therein, and means in tegral with the inner end of the butt for engaging the inner wall of thesocket for seagainst displacement there- I curing the butt from.
