SUGAR-SPRAYING APPARATUS.

This invention relates broadly to sugar spraying machines, and more particularly to a. simplified construction of liquid spraying apparatus for sugar machinery.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a sugar spraying apparatus which is simple in its construction and arrangement and which may be manufactured "and assembled at relatively small costand has a minimum number of parts with little tendency for the parts to deteriorate under continuous use.
Another object of my invention is to provide a sugar spraying apparatus having latch spring and latch mechanism for providing a positive lock for the runner when the same has become engaged with the timing screw of the mechanism for insuring reliable operation of the spraying apparatus.
Another object of this invention is to provide a sugar sprayer mechanism in which the sprayer nozzle is continuously operated by a crank and disc mechanism by adjustable means for directing the liquid spray to variable limits over the entire range of the sugar material to be washed for insuring a higher quality of the finished product.
A further object of the invention is to pr0- vide a sugar sprayer apparatus having an adjustable joint interposed between the sprayer nozzle and the driving mechanism for increasing or decreasing the speedof the sprayer nozzle at any point within the range of its path of oscillation, thereby insuring a perfectly uniform washing of the material under conditions where the distribution of the sugar in the carrier or basket may not be of uniform thickness.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a hollow bearing for carrying the oscillating arm of the sprayer nozzle of a sugar spraying apparatus permitting free motion of the nozzle, whilepreventing leakage of the sprayer fluid and prolonging the life of the tube gasket between the valve flange and the oscillating arm flange and at the same time increasing the rigidity of the oscillating arm and maintaining the flanges parallel. i
A further object of the invention is to provide a construction of nozzle for sugar spraying equipment which is provided with a per forated plate shaped and drilled on a radius which distributes equally the washing medium preventing the impinging together of the same before engaging with the surface of the material being sprayed, therebyeliminating all chance of cutting or wasting the material unnecessarily, thereby increasing the production of thewashed material.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a construction of sugar sprayerin which a center operating shaft is j ournaled longitudinally of a gear casing and arranged to be rocked in either direction for admit ting, on the one hand the water supply to the sprayer nozzle and on the other hand cutting off the water supply to the sprayer nozzle, the water supply being admitted to the sprayer nozzle simultaneously with the engaging. of the runner with the timing screw for controlling the time period during which water is supplied to the oscillating nozzle.
The invention will be described in more detail in the specification hereinafter following by reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows the sugar sprayer apparatus constructed in accordance with the principles herein, mounted on a centrifugal sugar washing machine; Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the sugar sprayer apparatus; Fig. 3 is a de elevation of the sugar sprayer equipment illustrated in Fig. 2, showing more clearly the operating mechanism of the oscillating noz-,

Referring more particularly to the detailed parts of the drawings, reference character l designates a casing for the sugar sprayer apparatus. The main drive shaft is shown at 2 journaled in bearing 2* carried in one wall of the casing 1. The main shaft 2 has a drive sprocket 3 thereon over which the sprocket chain 4 is engaged and may be driven from any suitable prime mover or source of power. The drive shaft 2 has a beveled pinion 5 thereon which meshes with bevel gear 6 keyed on transmission shaft 7 which is journaled in bearings 8 on opposite Walls of the casing 1. A crank disc is carried on the outer extremity of transmission shaft 7 on the exterior of the casing 1. A crank pin 10 may be selectively positioned in holes 10 in the crank disc 9 in order to adjust the path of travel of oscillating nozzle 16. A bushing 11 surrounds the crank pin 10 and fits within the arcuate slot 13 in rocker arm 12. The rocker arm 12 may be adjustably fixed or clamped to the oscillating pipe section 15 which leads to the sprayer nozzle 16 the position of this rocker I arm determining the path of travel of the sprayer nozzle 16 during its oscillatory movement. A pivotal connection 17 is provided between the pipe section 15 and the supply pipe line 19, the pivotal connection being established by means of an aligned abutting flange. A hollow bronze bearing 54 is inserted in the oscillating arm and extends into the pipe line 19 prolonging the life of the gasket 55 between abutting flanges 17 and 56 carried by the pipe section 15 and the pipe line 19 and also increases the rigidity of the oscillating nozzle 16 and holds the flanges parallel. The water supply line 19 is provided with a valve 20 therein inserted adjacent the main supply pipe 21. The valve 20 is provided with a valve stem 22, which has a pin and slot connection 23 at the top thereof with a crank arm 24. A shaft 25 is journaled within the gear case 1 in bearings 26 at opposite ends of the gear case and is arranged to rock through given limits. A handle 27 is keyed to the shaft 25 eXte iorly of the casing 1 for effecting rocking movement of shaft 25. The shaft 25 carries a small arm 28 thereon which connects through a link 29 with the end of the measuring slide bar 31. The measuring slide bar 31 is pivotally mounted in the casing 1 as represented at 31. A slidable carriage 32 is mounted for reciprocatory movement on the measuring slide bar 31 and is provided with screw threads 33 which engage with corresponding screw threads on timing screw 35 carried by shaft 36 journaled in bearings 37. A spur gear 38 is keyed to shaft 36 and meshes with drive gear 39 on main shaft 2, by which rotary power is delivered to the timing screw 35. On the end of easing 1 there is mounted by means of bolts 40 aspring latch 40 which extends vertically and is provided with a shoulder 41 for engaging the nose 43 of the measuring slide bar 31 when the measuring slide bar is in its lowermost position indicated in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6. A guide 44 is provided on the end of easing 1 for the measuring slide bar 31 which limits the movement of the measuring slide bar 31 to a single vertical plane. For positively raising the measuring slide bar 31 there isprovided an arm 45, shown more clearly in Fig. 5 as pivoted at 46 to the casing 1. The lever 45 engages the lower surface of the measuring slide bar 31 and tends to continuously urge the slide bar 31 in an upward direction by means of spring 49 which exerts a vertical upward movement on red 48 which connects at 47 with lever 45. The rod 48 has the lower end thereof mounted 'in a socket 50 establishing a guide for the lower end of rod 48.
The carriage 32 which reciprocate's on the measuring slide bar 31 is provided with lower bearings, as illustrated and with rod member 57 which projects through a slot 58 in the measuring slide bar 31 and engages spring 59. A limiting stop 34 is secured as shown, to the measuring slide bar 31,so that in raised position, as represented in Fig.7
where the threads 33 of the carriage 32 are disengaged from the threads on timing screw 35, there is the tendency for spring 59 to continuously urge carriage 32 in abutment with the stop 34. Therefore by adjusting the position of the stop 34 on the measuring slide bar 31 the distance to which the car riage 32 is returned under the action of spring 59 is directly determined.
The application of the sugar sprayer apparatus is illustrated more clearly in Fig. 1 where the apparatus is shown mounted upon a cylindrical casing 51 of the basket structure 52 which is centrifugally operated through shaft 53. V
The operation of the invention will be understood from the general arrangement illustrated in Fig. 1, where a sufficient amount of sugar known as a charge has been deposited in the basket 52 and where it is necessary to apply a given quantity of water or liquid in a given time to the sugar with out wasting an unnecessary quantity of the material being sprayed. The sugar sprayer equipment of this invention accurately con trols the time period of spraying and the amount of water or liquid required for the material being washed or sprayed, distributing the washing medium as required with the least possible waste.
lVhen power is imparted to the sprocket chain 4 for driving the sprocket 3 oscillatory motion is imparted to the nozzle 16. By properly adjusting the angular position of the rocker arm 12 by changing the position of clamp 14 on the pipe section 15 and choosing the position of crank pin 10 in the crank disc 9 the path of travel of the nozzle 16 maybe controlled. ln the released.

A sugar sprayer apparatus comprising in combination a casing, a drive shaft in said casing, a rotary disc member driven by said drive shaft, a pin member carried by said disc member; a sprayer nozzle, a sup ply line for liquid, a rocking connection between said supply line and said nozzle and alink extending between said rocking connection and the pin member on said rotary disc, said link member being slotted to slidably engage said pin member for imparting oscillatorymotion to said nozzle through a predetermined path.

A sugar sprayer apparatus comprising in combination a casing, a drive shaft in said casing, a rotary disc member driven by said drive shaft, a sprayer nozzle, a supply line forliquid, a rocking connection between said supply line and said'nozzle anda cam member extending between said rocking consaid casing, a rotary disc member driven by said drive shaft, a sprayer nozzle, a supply line'for liquid, a rocking connection between said supply line and said nozzle, a pin mem ber carried by said disc member, a link member adjustably' connected with said rocking connection and having a portion thereof formed in the shape of a cam for sliding engagement with said pin member for effecting oscillatory movement of said nozzle.

A sugar sprayer apparatus comprising in combination a casing, a drive shaft in said casing, a rotary disc member driven by said drive shaft, a sprayer nozzle, a supply line for liquidfa rocking connection between said supply line and said nozzle, a pinmember carried by said disc member, a link member adjustably connected with said rocking connection and having a portion thereof cut out interiorly providing a pair of arcuate shaped sides embracing opposite sides of said pin member whereby rotary motion of said disc 'elfects oscillatory movement of said nozzle. 11. A liquid spraying apparatus for sugar machinery comprising in combination a casing, a main drive shaft journaled in said casing,-an oscillating nozzle driven by power delivered through said drive shaft, a liquid supply line connected with said oscillating ply line, a timing screw journaledin said" casing, a measuring slide bar-pivoted at one end to sa1d casing and carrying a slidable carriage thereon for engagementwith said timing screw, a bell crank connected: atone end with said valve and at the other end with the outer extremity of said measuring slide bar, a sprlng latch for normally holding said measuring slide bar in lowermost position with said carriage, while maintainin said valve in open-position, and in engagement casing, a sprayer nozzle, means for imparting oscillatory motion to said sprayer nozzle from said main driving shaft, a timing screw, a measuring,vv slide bar, pivotally mounted in one s1de of said casing and nor-.

a spring member for normally tending to" disengage said carriage from said timing screw, and a substantially horizontal'member' projecting from said carriage for establish- 7 ing an abutment with said spring latch when, said carriage is driven to the end of its path, of travel for disengaging said spring latch from said measuring slide bar whereby said bar is moved upwardly under theaction of said spring member disengaging said carriage from said timing screw.
