GEORGE F. NAAB, OF LAKEWOOD, QHIQ, T0 BI-IE hl'GRTl-I AMERICAN hill-LIEU- EAOTURING CUIvIPAIfi-li'l REGUIERATQB-TYPE GIL BURILTER.
Application filed November This invention relates to liquid fuel burners and more particularly to oil burners of so called recuperator type which are arranged to employ an air supply at a relatively hi temperature for purposes of combustion of a low grade fuel oil mixed with air by an atomizing head which comprises a partof the burner.
One of the diiiiculties encountered in the employment of such a burner is the tendency of the oil to carbonize in that portion of its passage which is necessarily subjected to the high temperature of the air with which the oil is to be mixed.
It is an object of the present invention to provide means as a part of the burner whereby a cooling medium may be added to the oil passing through the burner whereby the oil may be maintained at a temperature low enough to prevent carbonization practically up to the zone of combustion.
Another aspect of the carbonization prob lem appears when the burner is turned oil after a period of use. Under such conditions even though the burner design may be such that carbonization does not take place during; the combustion operation, yet after the fuel and hot air supplies are out off the burner as a wholequiclrly rises to such a temperature that residual oil in the burner will carbonize so that the burner cannot again be used without a reopening of the oil passage.
It is a further object of the present invention to employ the cooling medium above mentioned for the purpose of cleaning out the fuel passage in the burner after the fuel supply has been cut off whereby the burner is in perfect condition to properly function at any subsequent time.
A still further object of the invention is to accomplish the specific objects oescribed in a manner entirely automatic so far as the op erator is concerned.
The exact nature and further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanyino drawing which shows a recuperating type of oil burner in which my invention has been i ncorporatech the drawing being generally a longitudinal section through pertinent parts of the burner.
The principal part of the burner is a hollow body member 1 which is mounted in any suitable way before an opening into the com bustion chamber of a furnace, which may be 14. 1927: Serial No. 233,158.
provided with the usual reverberatory lining and contents. The body is provided with a forward opening 2 arranged to lead to the combustion chamber, a lateral opening 3 adapted for connection with a low pressure hot air supply, and conveniently a rearward opening closed by a removable plate 4. The plate a is bored out to receive the stem 5 of an atomizing head 6 which may be of any familiar type, the stem 5 being hollowed to form a passage way 1 through which fuel may be supplied to the head 6 where it will be suitably mixed with air entering the opening 3 the mixture passing out the opening 2 into the combustion chamber. I
The st l 5 is provided with a circumferential cove 8 into which projects the end of a screw 9 carried by hand wheel 10 in threaded relation as at 11 with the plate l whereby the longitudinal position of the head 6 with respect to the opening 2 may be adjusted by rotation of the hand wheel 10. The rearward extremity of the stem 5 is taper bored as at 12 and is screw threaded to a T Into the opposite end of the T 13 is screw threaded nozzle 14% tile forward crtremity of which extends within the taper bore 12 of the stem 5. The rearward errtren'iity of the nozzle has connection as through the coupling 15 with an oil supply subject to a suitable valve not shown where by oil may pass through the coupling 15 the hollow 16 of the nozzle, the hollow 'l' of the stem to the atomizing head 6. The connec tion with the oil supply includes an element of flexibility to allow for the longitudinal adjusting; motion of the stem 5 already described and the oil is supplied at a pressure considerably above that of the hot air supply.
The lateral opening of the "l" 13 has 6011- nection as at 17 with a check valve 18 which may be of the ball check or other suitable type allowing flow into the T but preventing any flow in the opposite direction. The check valve 18 has connection as through a flexible conduit 19 with a supply of cooling medium at relatively low pressure and low ten perature such as air or steam supply.
llflicii the burner is functioning to the a furnace the operation will be as follows: assuming' the head 6 properly adjusted by the hand wheel 10. The fuel oil valve being opened oil is forced under a pressure of up to lbs. per square inch through the passage 7 to the head 6 where it is thoroughly Hill mid
