My invention relates to lamps particularly such as used in hand lanterns, carriage lanterns and the like, and consists in combining the lamp with a petrol lighter arranged so 5 as to allow of lighting the lamp without opening the casing or other protector. The Object of this arrangement is to facilitate the lighting of the lamp in stormy weather and to eliminate the risk incurred when lamps are lit with matches and the like in the presence. of straw or other easily inflammable substances.
In the accompanying drawings the invention is illustrated in connection with a burner such as used for hand lanterns,
F ig. l representing a view of the ligl'iter and the burner,
Fig. 2 a View at right angles to Fig. l.
and
Fig. I3 a top view of the arrangement.` The perforated plate Z) which supports the globe or other flame protector t of the lantern and through which the lamp burner :e
projects, carries on its underside la small petrol container' r having a filling aperture which is accessible from the top of the plate Z) and which is normally closed by a screw stopper s. A wick tube a proceeding from the container r is arranged so as to hold the gg exposed end of the wick in a position enabling the flame to be utilized for lighting the burner Opposite the wick tube a an abrasive wheel u is arranged on a shaft cl Lwhich is mounted in the brackets c on the plate b. rlfhere is also on the shaft a pinion e which meshes with a gear wheel 7' arranged under the plate b. he wheel f is mounted on a shaft 7i which is accessible from the outside of the lantern and fitted with a milled 40 wheel g whereby the shafts and the wheel et can be turned. The shaft 71, is held in a sleeve 7e and is shouldered for engagement with a screw cap t' which is fitted on the end of the sleeve to prevent axial displacement of the shaft. A flint e is arranged in a tube 219,975, and in Great Britain August 23, 1927.
crown teeth for engagement with similarteeth on a clutch member Q9 which is slidably feathered on the shaft d," and controlled byr a spring e. lWhen the wheel g is turned for eperating lthe abrasive wheel, the disc m is turned by the clutch member p so as to raise the cap 0 from the wick tube. However, the clutch teeth are inclined so as to allow the member 20 to slip after the cap,
ywhose movement is limited, has been fully opened. When the burner x has been lit the wheel g is turned backwards for applying the cap 0 to the wick tube so as to extinguish the lighter flame. ln this movement the clutch members are positively engaged and no slipping can take place.
l claim:
The combination in a lighting'device for lamps especially lanterns, of a lamp burner and a secondary burner lighted by means of a. pyrophoric sparking device consisting of a metallic container of spirit, a wick tube a, a cap to close the mouth of said tube fastened by means ofan arm to a disc m, turning loosely on a shaft d, mounted in brackets c, a clutch member p slidably feathered on said shaft (v and controlled by a spring e, an abrasive wheel u, a. flint 'u pressed against said wheel and a pinion e fixed on vshaft d, said pinion meshing with a gear Wheel. f mounted on the shaft it, a milled wheel g to turn said shafts, all substantially as described.
In testimony whereof l afm; my signature.
Fammi sorti/marks.
