COATING MLCHINE.

Our invention relates to coating raachines for web material, and more particularly to machines of the class employed in making 'loor coverings such as printed linoleum, etc.
The principal object of our invention is to produce a machine of the above type which shall be capable of placing upon t e web a coating in several layers or stripes which may be 0f varigated colors and b which a primary coating having a mar le or similar ed'ect may be produced.
Details of the invention will be more uiy described hereinafter, reference bein had to the accompanying drawings, of whic Fig. 1 is a side elevation of our improved coating machine;
Fig. 2 is a. plan view of the machine;
Fig. 3 is a. transverse sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation taken along the line 4--4 of Fig. 3.
As illustrated in the drawings, our improved coating machine comprises side frames 1 and 2 spaced apart by any suitable means and providing a support for a series of pans or reservoirs 3 to 1) inclusive, which are adapted to contain coating materials of various colors. In each end of each of the said pans is provided a bearing 11, in which is rotatably mounted a shaft 12. On each shaft 12 is secured a color or feed roll 13, within the respective color pans. Each of the shafts 12 extends beyond the side frame 2 and is journaled in a bearing 14 projecting from a bracket 15 secured to the said side frame 2. Each .of the brackets 15 is ro vided with. a second bearing 14 in Whifih is mounted a lay shaft 16. Bevel gears 17 and 18 are secured to the shafts 12 and 16 respectively, by means of which each of the feed rolls 13 is rotated upon operation of the shaft 16.
Each of the color pans has attachedto its respective ends a bracket 19 by means of which the said color pan is secured to the side frames 1 and 2 respectively. Secured to and extending between each pair of brackets 19 is an angle bar 20, adapted to support a platform 21 over which a web of material is drawn in its passage through the machine. The platform 21 extends longitudinally of the machine under the bottoms of the series of reservoirs or color pans 3 to 1G.
A web of material, illustrated at @,*Fig 1, is drawn from any suitable source over a roll 22 which is rotatably mounted in brackets 23 at one end of the machine and passes over the platform 21 and a suction roll 23. The suction roll 23 is provided with a shaft or trunnions 24 rotatabiy mounted in bearings 25 at the end of the n'iac ine opposite the roll 22, and comprises a hollow perforated drum, having side flanges 26, 26. A suction box 27 is disposed between the flanges 26, 26 and partially surrounds the drum 23, as illustrated in Figs. l and 2.
, The suction box 27 is provided with a suction pipe 28 whiclrmay be connected to any desired form of exhaust pump or fan by means of which a partial vacuum may be maintained within the suction box 27 and the drum 23.
It Will be noted that as the web material passes from the platform 21 it engages the portion of the suction drum 23 which extends beyond the suction box 27. consequently as the suction roll 23 is rotated the web material adheres to the exposed portion of said roi and is thereby drawn through the ma* chine over the platform 21. A At such time the color feed rolls 13 are rotated in a counterclockwise direction, as viewed in Fig. 1, carrying on their peripheries a certain amount of the coating material contained in the respective color pans.
As illustrated in the drawings, suitable delivery means in the form of spoons 30 engage the surface of the revolving color feeding rolls and thereby scrape the coating material from said roll. The colored coating material flows downward over the said delivery spoon and onto the surface of the web material passing therebeneath.
Each of the color delivery spoons 30 comprises a blade having secured adjacent one of its ends a yoke member 31. One arm 32 of the said yoke member is provided with a slot 33 for the accommodation of a supportinf' rod 35, by means of which the color de ivery spoons are maintained in proper relation to the color feed rolls 13. The seeond arm 34 of the yoke member 32 is provided With a slot 36 forthe accommodation of a rectangular portion 37 of a collar 38. Each of the collars-38 is adjustably mounted on the supporting rod 35 and is provided with a set screw 39 by means of which the said collar, the supporting yoke 31 and the delivery spoon 3() ma be secured in proper relation thereon. yach of the supporting rods 35 is slidably mounted in bearings 4() and 41 secured to the side frames 1 and 2 respectively. Secured to each of the supporting rods 35 adjacent the outer side of the caring 40 is a Weighted arm 42 by means of which the color delivery spoons 30 are held in engagement With the surface of respective color feed roll 13.
Secured to each of the supporting rods 35, adjacent the inner side of the bearing 41, is a. grooved collar 43, the groove 44 of Which is adapted to receive a pin 45 extending between the arms 46 of a yoke member 47, which partially surrounds each of the grooved colars 43. Each of the yoke members 47 is secured to one end of a rod 48, the opposite end of which is provided with an eccentric strap 49 adapt-ed to encircle an eccentric 50 secured to the lay shaft 16 and located thereon adjacent the side of the bracket 15 opposite that engaged by the bevelled pinion 18. Upon rotation of the shaft 16, the color delivery spoons 30 receive a reciprocating motion longitudinally of the color feed rolls 13.
When coating material of a heavy quality is being placed upon the web material, a fixed doctor blade 51 is provided, such as illustrated within the color pans 3 and 10. By this means a limited amount of the material is permitted to be carried to the color delivery spoons 30 by the surface of the color feed rolls 13.
Intermediate the supporting platform 21 and the suction drum 23, the web .fr passes over a supporting roll 52 having a shaft 53 rotatably mounted in the side frames l and 2. Directly above the supporting roll 52 is provided an adjustable doctor blade 54, which extends entirely across the web ac and engages the coated surface thereof as it passes from under the last color pan 10. The doctor blade 54 is secured to a shaft 55 which is rotatably mounted in a bearing block 56 at each of its ends. The bearing blocks 56 are slidably mounted in brackets 57 and 58 secured to the side frames 1 and 2 respectively. Each of the bearing blocks 56 is provided with an upwardly extending jack-screw 59, the threads of which are adapted to a threaded aperture in a cap-plate 60 of each of the brackets 57 and 58. The lower end of each of the jackscrews 59 is rotatably mounted in the respective bearing block 56 and the upper end of each jack-screw has secured thereto a mitre gear 61 adapted to mesh with a mitre gear 62 secured adjacent each end of a transverse shaft 63. The shaft 63 is rotatably mounted in bearings 64, 64 suitably supported on the upper ends of the jack-screw 59 above the mitre gears 6l. A hand Wheel 65 is secured to the shaft 63 adjacent the side frame 1 of the machine. Upon turning the shaft 63 the jack-screws 59 are rotated in the cap plates 60 and the bearing blocks 56 are moved vertically in the supporting,T brackets 57 and 58.
In addition to the vertical movement, the doctor blade 54 may be adjusted angularly with respect to the Web and for this purpose the shaft 55 is provided with a worm wheel 66 adjacent the bearing block 56 in the supporting bracket 57. The bearing block 56 is provided with bearings 67 in which is rotatably mounted a shaft 68 having a Worm 69 secured thereto intermediate said bearings 67, and is also provided With a hand wheel 70 by means of which the shaft and the worm 69 may be rotated. By rotating the worin 69 and the Worm wheel 66, the shaft 55 may be rotated in the bearings 56 and the angular relation of the doctor blade 54 with the web w may be set as desired.
Power may be supplied to the machine from any suitable source, and as illustrated in Fig. 2 a main shaft 7l is rotatably mounted in bearings 72, 73 and 74. A cone pulley 75 is secured to the shaft 71 intermediate the bearings 72 and 73. A bevelled pinion 76 is secured to the shaft 71 intermediate the bearings 7 3 and 74, and meshes with a bevelled gear Wheel 77 secured to the lay shaft 16` by means of which said shaft and the color feed rolls 13 are rotated and the Color delivery spoons 3() are reciprocated. A pinion 78 is secured to the shaft 71 intermediate the bearing 73 and the bevelled pinion 76, and meshes with a spur gear 79 loosely mounted on the shaft 8O which is rotatably mounted in bearings 73 and 74". A hub on the gear 79 is pro vided with clutch teeth 81 adapted to be engaged hy similarly formed teeth of a clutch element 82 which is splined to the shaft 80. A suitable handle 83 is provided for controlling the clutch element 82. A pinion 84 is secured to the end of the shaft 80 intermediate the hearing 74 and the suction drum 23 and meshes with a spur gear S5 secured to the shaft 24 of the suction drum 23. A second pinion 86 is secured to the shaft 80 and through a train of gears 87, 88 and 8), the latter of which is secured to the shaft 53 of the supporting roll 52, the said supporting roll is rotated.
From the above description, it will be clear ly understood that upon applying power to the sha tt 71 and a partial vacuum tothe suction box 27, a web of material may be drawn from any suitable source along the platform llU lZU
21 by means of the suction drum 23. At the same time, the color feed rolls 13 will be rotated and a supply of the colored coating material contained Within the color pans or reservoirs 3 to l() inclusive will be carried upward on the face of the rolls, and by means of the color spoons 30 a portion of the said coating material will be scraped from said rolls and deposited upon the surface of the web w.
The color delivery spoons 30 may be of any desired Width and may be positioned along the supporting rods 35 in any desired combinations of positions. Coating material of any desired color may be placed in each of the color pans and as the shaft 16 is rotated and the color delivery spoons 3G are moved longitudinally of the feed rolls 13 the coating material from the rolls 13 will be deposited upon the surface of the web in Wavedike stripes of any desired width, or in any desired relative positions. As the web passes under the adjustable doctor blade 54, Vthe coating material, having been applied in a manner as above described, is smoothend and the various colors thereby are run one into the other to form the variegated or marble-like surface on the web of material.
If it is desirable to eliminate anyr of the colors, the corresponding color spoons may me moved to a position wherein none of the coloring from those particular pans will be placed upon the surface of the web, the spoon supporting rods 35 thereof are adapted to be rotated to a position illustrated in broken lines in Fig. l, wherein the delivery end of the spoons on each of said rods lie immedi ately above a drip trough 90, which prevents.
the coating material on said spoons from being deposited on the surfaceof the web, it being understood that the feed end of said spoon is removed from contact with respectto the color roll at that time.
If desired, reciprocation of the spoons 30 on an of the supporting rods 35 may be eliminate and the said spoons maintained in a stationary position to deposit the coating material in straight longitudinally extending stripes on the surface of the web. This may be accomplished by raising the yoke inem` ber 47 until the pin 45 is released from the groove 44 of the collar 43 which is secured to the spoon supporting bars 35. The yoke member 47 may be turned to the position illustrated in broken lines in Fig. 3 when it is desired to produce the straight longitudinal stripes.
By adjusting the doctor blade 54, as above described, the degree of pressure and the angle of contact of said blade on the coated web may be minutely controlled, thereby changing the extent of variegation of the colors, it being noted that the coating material deposited from pan 3 will be slightly drier than that deposited from pan 10 and the intermediate supportin deposits will be dried in the same proportionate relation, therefore, there will be the least amount of smoothing on the deposit from the pan 3 and the greatest amount on the deposit from pan l0 toi' any given pressure of the doctor blade 54 on the coated surface.
We claim:
l. In a coating machine, a reservoir for the coating material a feed roll rotatably mounted in said reservoir; a supporting rod substantially parallel to said feed roll; delivery spoons adjustably secured to said supporting rod and adapted to engage said feed roll; means on said rod for maintaining said spoons in either a roll engaging or disengaging position; and a drip trough underlying the delivery end of said spoons when in their said disengaging positions.

In a coating machine, a reservoir for the coating material; a feed roll rotatably mounted in said reservoir; a supporting rod rotatably and slidably mounted in a position substantially parallel to said feed roll; collars adjustably secured to said supporting rod; a rectangular portion on each collar; delivery spoons each comprising a detachable yoke member having one arm slotted and adapted to engage said rectangular portion and a second arm slotted and adapted to engage said supporting bar; a blade secured to said yoke member and adapted to engage said feed roll; and means for rotating said feed roll.

In a coating machine, a reservoir for the coating material; a feed roll rotatably mounted in said reservoir; a supporting rod rotatably and slidably mounted in a position substantially parallel to said feed roll; collars adjustably secured to said supporting rod; a rectangular portion on each collar; delivery spoons each comprising a detachable yoke member having one arm slotted and adapted to engage said rectangular portion and a second arm slotted and adapted to engage said supporting bar; a blade secured to said yoke member and adapted to engage said feed roll;

means'for reciprocating said supporting rod ang said delivery spoons relative to said feed ro 4. In a coating machine, a reservoir for the coating material; a feed roll rotatably mounted in said reservoir; a supporting rod substantially parallel to said feed roll; delivery spoons adj ustably secured to said su porting rod and adapted to engage said fee roll; means on said rod for maintaining said spoons in either a roll engaging or disengaging position; a lay shaft; means co-operativel connecting said lay shaft and said fee roll; means on said lay shaft for reciprocating said rod and said delivery spoons; and detac able means for connecting said reciprocating means with said delivery spoon supporting a rod.
5. In a coating machine, a reservoir for the coating material; a feed roll rotatably mounted in said reservoir; a supportn rod substantially arallel to said feed roll; elivery spoons adwstably secured to said su porting rod and adapted to engage said feed roll; means on said rod for maintaining said spoons in either a roll engaging or disengaging posidetermining the thickness of the coating matel0 rial on said feed roll.
