Description

n. L. DAIGRE. H ting-Jacket.
Patented Oct. 11,1875.-
NJ ETERS, FHOYOLITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D O.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
HENRY L. DAIGRE, OF ALEXANDRIA, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HUNTING-JACKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,622, dated October 11, 1875; application filed July 10, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY L. DAIGRE, of Alexandria, in the parish of Rapides and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Sportsmans Coat, of which the follow ing is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents an extended perspective view of my improved sportsmans coat; Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section of the same on the line 00 :20, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 a detail section on the line y :4 Fig. l, of the game-pocket at the side of the coat.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide for sportsmens use a coat that contains the requisites for hunting, distributed in a neat and convenient manner over the body, so as to be carried easily, and without interfering with the handling of the gun, while providing storage-pockets for the game, empty shells, 8m.
My invention consists of a coat provided at the skirts with game pockets, having side gussets and bottom nettings. Within the gamepockets are separate pockets of smaller size for the empty shells. The game-pockets have covering-flaps, which may be thrown up and attached to buttons for exhibiting the result of the days sport.
In the drawing, A represents a coat of the customary cut, which is buttoned in front to fit snugly to the body. A series of shell-pockets,-B, are arranged across the chest part of the coat in such a manner that at that side which is used for shooting a less number of rows is arranged than at the other side, so that the shells do not interfere with the butt of the gun in shooting. About forty to fifty shells, according to caliber, may thus be readily and securely carried. At the side flaps or skirts of the coat are arranged game-pockets G, with gussets that allow the expanding of the outer covering-flaps, so as to accommodate a considerable amount of game. The lower or bottom part of the game-pockets is made of netting D, through which the feathers and blood emit and fall to the ground without soiling the pants. Inside of the gamepockets are smaller pockets E, which form separate compartments for the storage of the empty shells. The game passes alongside of the same to the bottom of the pockets, which open wide enough to prevent the game from entering the empty shell-pockets and soiling the shells. The empty shells arethus saved Without any inconvenience. The upper front corners of the covering-flaps of the game-pockets have small front gussets a, which admit the wider opening of the upper part of the pockets for the readier insertion of the game. Small loops 1) of the upper front corners may be slipped on buttons cl, to keep the pocket closed when not opened for use, and preserve its neat appearance. The lower part of the covering-flaps O hides the game from view, but is provided with button-holes e, which may be thrown up and fastened to buttons 6 at some distance above the lower edge of the pockets. The game may be thereby exposed to view when the sportsman desires to exhibit it.
When he starts out for a hunt the coat appears as an ordinary coat, as the loops, gussets, and net-work are covered, and do not alter the natural appearance of the coat. When the pockets are filled the weight is equally distributed upon the body, drawing alike at both shoulders. The coat has also the usual lined and other pockets for shot-pouch, powder-flask, and other articles, and forms a practical and convenient coat for hunting on foot or horseback, and with slight modifications for the use of fishermen and others.
Having thus 'described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A sportsmans coat, provided with gamepockets at the side flaps or skirts, having side gussets and bottom net-work, for the purpose set forth.
2. In a gamepocket, constructed substantially as described, the small front gusset and loop, in connection with fastening-button, to admit convenient opening and closing of upper part of pocket for introduction of game, as specified.
3. The covering-flaps of the gamepockets, having button-holes at lower part, in combination with buttons of the same for looping up flaps for exhibiting the game, substantially as setforth.
HENRY L. DAIGRE.
