This invention relates to adjustable hammers for disintegrators and the like. Ham.- mers'of this kind are pivotedtoa rotary carrier, and the device herein shown permits 5 them to be adjusted toward .andawayfrom the axis of the rotary carrierhso as to ob tain the desired clearance betweenthe mas and the surface. which I, supports the material to be crushed or pulverized. This adjustment enables the hammers to most .ef-
fectively perform theirfunction for a long period of time,; after the 'free ends, or heads,
of .t-he hammers are wornby contact with the materia-l in the apparatus. y The hammers are subjected to extremely severe shocks and one of my objects is to produce a strong and durableadjusting de viceadapted to Withstand such shocks with out dangerof breakage or displacement.
A further object. is to producea simple and inexpensive adjusting device whichcan be easily and quickly manipulated to vary the positions of thehammers. .7 With the foregoing and otherlobjects in view, the inventioncomprises the novel construction, combination and arrangement l of parts hereinafter more specifically described and'illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention. However, it is to be understood that the invention comprehends changes, variations and modifications which come wthin the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary View showing a series of hammers adjustably secured to a rotary carrier. v
Fig. -2'is a'view partly in elevation and partly in section on the line 22 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a-perspective view of. one of the adjustable blocks.
To illustrate one form of the invention, I have shown a rotary carrier comprising two pairs of disks 1 secured to a rotary shaft 2, so as to rotate with the shaft. The disks of each pair may be located between smaller-i disks 3 and at opposite sides of a spacing disk 4. Fastening devices, such as rivets 6- I have shown substantially U-shaped ham mers, each comprising a head 7 with arms 8'extending from its ends. The object of the adjustment hereafter described is to maintain the desired clearance between the heads v 1,686,128- 'FPATENT ).FFIJC E;;5
7 and the grinding lsurface 9 .vvhichfsupports the arms 8. Polygonal blocks l'l are pivotally mounted on the pivotgro'd 10, each block being surrounded by and interlocked with one of the armsfS- .The disks I prevent lat eral displacement of theblocks 11;, and the arms 8. therebyretaining the .blo cks; ini interlocking engagement with the arms. 1 Each arm S ha-s an opening conforming to the outer edge of its polygonal block 11, and
said block is eccentric to the pivotrod 1O on.
which it ismounted; The blocks are adapted to occupy different positionsin the arms 8 so as to locate the hammersin different positionswith respect to the. grinding (surface 9. To adjust the hammer-s, the pivot; rods 10 llcan be removed fromthe arms and replaced in any desired position, to obtain the most satisfactory clearance between the; hammers and the grinding surface 9.
'arejremoved from theidisks 1,.and the arms 8 are withdrawn fromthedisks.v .The blocks The means -for' detachably securing the pivot rodto the rotary carrier is a tube 12 surrounding the pivot rod and confined between pairs-of disks 1. The ends of this u tube engage the inner disks 1 to prevent longitudinal displacement of the tube, and 'the pivot rodis detachably secured to the tube by means of a cotter pin 13. The pivot rod is thus securely held whenthe apparatus is in service but said rod can be'easily and quickly removed to blocks 11. g I
The service shocks do not tend permit adjustment of the to displace either the pivot rods orthe adjustable blocks 11. The blocks are pivotally mounted on the rods 10 so as to turn with the hammers, and although these blocks are eccentric to the rods, the shocks do nottend to changethe positions of the blocks relative to the hammers.
I claim:
1. In a disintegrator, a rotary carrier, a
pivot carried .by said carrier, a hammersupport pivotally mounted on said pivot, and a hammer carried by said support, said support being adjustable to vary the position of the hammer relative to the axis of said pivot.
2. In a disintegrator, a rotary carrier, a
pivot carried by said carrier, and a hammer between said arm andpivot to vary the position of the hammer relative to said pivot,
said adjustable member being pivotally suported on said pivot and movable with the Bummer when the latter is in service.
'4. In a disintegrator, a rotary-carrier, a
adapted to swing about theaxis of saidpivot, said hammercomprisin an arm surrounding said ivot, and an acfiustable member a located etween said arm andpivot to vary-the position'of the hammer relative to said pivot,
said ad'ustab le member being a polygonal block'plvotally mounted on said pivot and detachably interlocked with said arm.
5. In a disintegrator, a rotary carrier, a
V ivot carried by said carrier, a polygonal lock ivotally mounted'on said pivot, said block ing eccentric to said pivot, and a hammer carried by saidblock."
" 6i In adisintegratona rotary ca-rrier,'a ivot carried by said carrier, a polygonal 1 look ivotally mounted on said vpivot, said block ing eccentric to said pivot, and a hammer 'carried'bysaid block, said hammer having an opening conforming to said polygonal block, and said block being adj ustable to different positions in said opening.
7. In a, disintegrator, a rotary carrier comprising a pair of disks, a vpivot'rod extending through .said disks, a polygonal block confined between said disks and pivotally mountedon'said rod, and a hammer comprising an arm mounted on said block, said arm having an opening conforming to the outer edge of said polygonal block, said block being eccentric to said pivot rod, and the pivot rod being detachable from said carrier to permit removal of said block from saidopening. 4 8. In a disintegrator, a'rotary carrier comprisingtwo pairs of disks, an a proxi;- mately U-shaped hammer (provided witha pair of arms, each arm being confined between'th'e disks'of one of said pairs, a pivot rod passing through both pairs of disks'fand also through said arms, a pair of polygonal blocks pivotallyfmounted on said pivotrod WILLIAM MJDUNG N,
