'CLARENCE B. HARBISON, OF'L'IMA, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE OHIO STEEL `IEOKUNDLRZ' v l sinnrnaivin STRUCTURE.
Application f11ed October 29, 1927. Serial No. 229,574.
rlhis invention relates to improvements in side frames and more particularly to side 'frames of the ordinary hollow cast steel type having a journal box cast integral therewith. The principal object of the invention is to provide an improved form of side trame ot the type above described whereby increased strength and rigidity is afforded, especially adjacent the ournal box.
As ordinarily constructed side frames of the type herein referred to are provided with at opposite ends adjacent the journalboxes. lThese tension and compression members are usually formed of a curved Achannel or substantially oval cross section, either of the open C or closed D form. It has been found that many failures of such side trames occur through and adjacent the corner of the ournal box, due to a combination of torsional and ydirect stresses thereon, and accordingly in the present invention I provide an improved box like cross section which is better suited to resist stresses at this point.
The invention may best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan view showing` one end of a side frame constructed in accordance with my invention, j
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the portion of the frame shown in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a transverse section taken either on line 3-3 or 3?-33 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a sectiontaken on line 4 4 of Figure 2.
Referring to details shown in the drawings,
the portion of the side frame illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 constitutes about one-halt of an ordinary side frame, and includes upper `or compression member 10, lower or tension member 1,1, one upright column 12, and journal box 13, all formed in anintegralcasting as shown. The compression member 10 a-nd the tension member 11 converge adjacent lthe Vjournal box in the Vusual manner.
In carrying out my invention I form the tension and compressionmembers adjacent the column l2`of`the usual standard'curved journal box, as shown inFigure 3', which iigure represents the shape or" thetension member 11, on line 3&3 of Figure 2,"and also the shape ot the compression member 10 on line 3a-,3a of the same ligure. 'Vith a constructionsuch as herein disclosed it will be seen that the compression and tension mem-V bers. merge into a single box like section having a pair oi:l relatively highupright side walls 14, 14, extending over and at the side of thejournal box 13, thus giving far greater strength and rigidityat this point than with previous constructions in which the curvedv or oval section of the compression and tension members were continued to the point otj uncture with the journal box. Accordingly a side frame formed as abover retains the demonstrated advantages of arcuate or oval sections adjacent the column, but has also the additional advantage of greater strength adjacent the pointA of connection of :the-- Vmay be made without departing from the spirit and scope ofmy invention.
I claim:
1. A side framev comprising an integral casting including journal boxes, and tension andVV compression members converging at opposite ends adjacent said journal boxes, said tension and compression membersV each having arcuate cross sections intermediate their ends merging into box sections adjacent each ot said journal boxes.
- 2. A side :trame comprising an integral 1 casting including journal boxes, and tension Y and compression membersl converging at opposite ends adjacent said journal'boxes, said tension and compression members each having arcuate cross sections intermediate their ends merging into box sections and in turn merging into a single box section adjacent each of said journal boxes.
Signed at Lima, Ohio, this 24thvdayo- October,1927. Y
CLARENCE B. HARBISON.
