IMPROVEMENT IN LEVER-POWERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,60ll, dated October l1, 1875; application led September4, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY C. BELL, of Edina, 'Knox county, Missouri, have invented at new and Improved Lever-Power, ot' which the following is :t specification: l
The matin feature ot' my invention is e vibrating lever, provided with notches or sockets, adapted for receiving the lin-ks of chains, which, in practice, pass around or otherwise connect with the. object to be raised. The lever is suspended and vihruted ou u. central pivot, so that the hoisting-chains are alternately slackened l.ind subjected to strain, each cha-in being shortened when slack, es hereinafter described.

A is the lever, which is suspended on :t pivot, B, by menus ot' :t chain, a, connected with any suitable support, I). C zuid D represent the hoisting-chains; and E, F, and Gr., notches or open slots to receive the chainlinks, as shown. These notches are formed in the side wells of recesses` formed one on each side ot' the pivot B, and are ot' such width as adapts them to ltdmit links of the chains G D, but will not permit the joints of the links to pass through. Notches E F are for the links of different shape, and notches G are for :t longer purchase. In other Words, for. lifting heavy weights, I require a short purchase, and hence place the chain-links in notches E or F. Light weights may be raised with greater rapidity by placing the chain-links in notches Sr, since such notches vibra-te through at greater nrc than notches E or F. When one ot' the hoisting-chains is slack, say chain D, as shown in Fig. l, it u1u-y be detached from the slot and drawn up through the slot in leverA till it becomes taut, and ztnother link is inserted in the notch and the lever depressed. The other chain-say C-will then become sleek, and may be'simil-.trly drawn tuut lind reedjusted in the same notch as before. This oper-ttion will be continued until the shortening 0f chains C D has raised the object to the desired height.
