SUGAR-DUMPING WAGON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,544, dated April 8, 1884.
Application filed February 13,1884. (No model.)
1"0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAiins D. Enwxnns and Leon F. HAUBTMAN, of New Orleans, parish of Orleans, Louisiana, have invnted certain new and useful Improvements in Sugar-Wfagons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of our invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in sugarwagons, to facilitate dumping the same. The invention consists in a wagon-box provided at one end with means for hinging it, and at the opposite end with means for receiving a rope to lift the latter end of the box, and thus dump the box.
Our invention also consists in parts and details, as will be fully set forth and described hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding'parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is alongitudinal elevation of a sugar wagon provided with our improvements, and a sectional view of parts of the sugar-house. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, parts being broken out. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a wagon provided with modifications of our improvements.
The box or bin Ais providedwith the wheels B, in the usual manner. On one end of the box two eyes or staples, G, are secured on the outer surface, and at the opposite end two apertured lugs, D, project from the upper edge of the box.
On the edge of the trough E, into which the sugar is to be dumped, two standards, F, are secured, which are provided with eyes F in the upper ends. A rod, G, is passed through the eyes F, and through the eyes or staples C on the box, so as to form a hinge. Hooks G are passed through the apertured lugs D, the
said hooks being held on the end of arope, H, passed'over a pulley, J, and secured on the drum of a Windlass, K, whereby by winding the rope H on the Windlass-drum the outer end of the box is raised and the contents of the box dumped to the trough E.
If it is not desired to have the eyes (3 secured permanently on the box A, two bars, L,
are clamped on the box, which are provided with apertured lugs L, and at their lower ends with hooks M. A collar, N, having a downwardlyprojccting prong, O, is mounted l loosely on each bar L, the said collars being provided with binding-screws P, for locking them in place on the bars. The hooks M are brought up against the bottom of the box A, the collars N are so adjusted that their prongs 0 project into the box, and then the collars are locked in place, whereby the bars L will be clamped on the end of the car. The rod G is then passed through the apertures in the lugs L, and through the eyes F in the standards F.
In place of providing the apertured lugs D, tongs Q can be used, which are held on the ends of the rope H, the said tongs having a hook on the outer jaw and a plate on the innor jaw, the hooked jaw being adapted to catch on the rinrstrip A of the box A, as shown in Fig. 8. A hook on the end of the rope H is passed through eyes formed on the upper end of the tongs-levers.
The standards F on the trough E are preferably made adjustable in height.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and dcsi re to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination. with a wagon-box having eyes formed on one end, of standards at the trough into which the contents of the box are to be dumped, which standards have eyes formed 011 their upper ends, and of a rod passed through the eyes on the end of the box and the eyes on the standards, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with awagoubox, of l bars provided with eyes or apertures, which bars are clamped on the end of the box, standards provided with eyes, and of a rod passed through the eyes in the standards and the eyes on the bars clamped on the end of the box. substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with a wagon-box, of the bars L, having apertured lugs L, and hooks M, the collars N, provided with the prongs O, and means for looking the collars on the bars, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. The combination, with a wagon-box, of
the eyesO,secured on oneend, and the apertured vided with means for hinging it, of the tongs 1o lugs D on the opposite end, substantially as Q, having a plate on the end of onejaw anda herein shown and described. hook on the end of the other jaw, substantially 5.
