UNITED STATES WILLIAM W. BIELER, 0F HAYS, KANSAS.
POWER HAMMER.
Application filed March 9, 1926.
This invention relates to power hammers and it is an object of the invention to provide an apparatus of this kind wherein the anvil is maintained in desired posit-ion by the supporting structure for the apparatus and which anvil extends to the base of the apparatus.
Another object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of this kind employing a helve carrying the upper die or hammer, said helve being supportedin a manner permitting the motion of the die or hammer to be free and flexible due to the fact that the helve carries no unnecessary weight. 7
Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to provide an apparatus of this kind wherein the means for operating the helve comprises flat springs arranged above and below the helve and in connection with the operating means for the helve, said springs permitting the helve or more particularly the outer or hammer carrying end to have vibration.
An additional object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of this kind comprising a supporting frame constructed and assembled in a manner to provide an effective structure and with which the anvil is detachably engaged to permit said anvil being removed when it is desired to dress the same.-
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved power hammer whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the bet ter understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation. illustrating an apparatus constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional View taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view in side elevation of the helve and the parts concomitant thereto removed;
Figure 4 is a view in top plan of the struc- Serial No. 93,526.
ture as illustrated in Figure 3, the coacting bearings for the helve being indicated by broken lines;
Figure 5 is a view in perspective of th frame and anvil as herein employed, with the helve and its associated parts removed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, the supporting frame F embodied in In improved apparatus comprises the end sills 1 each constituting an angle iron having a flange a vertically disposed and the lower flange 6 being adapted to be suitably anchored to a desired base.
Secured to the vertical flange a of each of the sills 1 are the upstanding beams 2 the same constituting angle irons with a flange 0 of each of said irons inwardly disposed and its second flange d outwardly directed and directly connected by the rivets 3 or the like to the flange a of an end sill 1. The lower portions of the horizontally aligned flanges 0 of the beams 2 are connected by the horizontally disposed beams f riveted, as at 5, or otherwise secured to the inwardly directed flanges c, said beams f extending a predetermined distance beyond an end pair of beams 2. Each of these beams 1 also preferably constitutes an angle iron and has one of its flanges e outwardly and horizontally disposed with its second flange f downwardly directed and with which the connection 5 coaets. As herein disclosed, there is interposed between each of the beams 2 and beams 4a spacer block 6. V
The upper portions of the horizontally or longitudinally disposed beams 2 are connected by the beams 7 each of which also constituting an angle iron having an upwardly disposed inner vertical flange g riveted, as at 8, to the inwardly directed flanges 0 of the beams 2 and with its lower horizontal flange h outwardly disposed.
Connected to the inwardly disposed flanges c of the beams 2 at one end of the apparatus and to the upstanding flanges g of the beams 7 are the brace members 9, said members being preferably maintained in applied posi tion through the medium of the rivets 10.
These brace members 9 preferably coact with manner but preferably by the belt 14 operatively engaged with the pulley 15 carried by one end portion of the shaft. This shaft 12 also carries a' second pulley 16 with which is DQIililVOly engaged a belt 17 said belt 17 extending inwardly alongside the frame F and operatively engaging with a pulley 18 mounted upon one end of the shaft 19. This shaft 19 extends transversely of the beams 4 and is rotatably supported by the bearings 20 secured to the flanges c of said beams. v
The shaft 19 betweenthe beams 4 is provided with a crank 21 of requisite throw and with which crank is freely engaged a bearing 22. 'lhisbearing 22' is suitably affixed to the extremities of the parallel bars 23 of predetermined length extending upwardly of the frame between the upper beams 7. The upper extremities of the bars 23 are operatively engaged with a bearing 24 which in turn is pivotally connected, as at 25, with the lower end portions of the upstanding elongated arms 26. he arms 26 are connected at points spaced lengthwise thereof by the transversely disposed bolts 27 to each of which is secured the free end portion of a flat spring 28, each of said spring being preferably of a laminated type. The opposite end portions of the springs are clamped, as at 29, to the pivoted end portion of the hammer helve 30, said springs being positioned above and below the helve and disposed on a curvature toward their outer ends in a direction away from the helve. The clamping means 29 for the helve 30 includes a bottom plate 31 to which is held a transversely disposed shaft 32 coacting, with the bearing blocks 33 at opposite sides of the helve 30 and mounted upon an outstanding table or platform 34 at the upper end of the beam 2 beyond which the beams 4 extend and with which the brace members 9 are engaged. This mounting of the helve 3O permits the same to have free rocking movement in a vertical direction, such movement being transmitted thereto through the springs 23 as flexed or vibrated upon recurrent movement of the arms 26. v,
As is particularl illustrated in Figure 4, one end portion of t e shaft 32 is continued by a forwardly directed extension 35 secured as at 36, to the helve 30 at a predetermined point outwardly of its pivotal connection.
Snugly positioned between the flanges c of the beams 2 remote from the pivoted end of the helve 30 is an anvil 37. This anvil comprises an elongatedbar of mild steel the upper portion of which being hardened to form the lower die for the hammer 38 secured to and depending from the outer or free end por tion of the helve This anvil or bar 37 when applied has its lower end substantially coplanar with the under surface of the out stand ng flanges 7) of the end sills lso that the impact imposed from above upon the anvil or bar 37 by the hammer 38 will be also received upon the base or foundation upon which the apparatus is mounted.
The anvil or bar 37 is detachably maintained in applied position by the bolts 39 extending transversely through the anvil or bar 37 and the inwardly directed flanges o of the adjacent beams 2 at points spaced lengthwise of said beams. By having the anvil or bar 37 removable the same can be readily taken out when desired to dress the anvil as required.
The upper stretch of the belt 17 passes under an idle pulley 40 carried by the outer end portion of a rock arm 41 arranged at one end portion of a rock arm 42 extending transversely of the beams 4 and rotatably engaged with the bearings 43 secured to the upper flanges e of said beams. V
The opposite end of the arm 42 outwardly of the apparatus is provided with an elongated operating arm 44 terminating in an inwardly disposed extension 45 providing a pedal whereby the pulley 40 may be caused to engage the upper stretch of .the belt 17 to bring said belt in requisite frictional contact with thcpulley 2-1 to effect the required rotation of the shaft 19. It is to be understood that normally the belt 17 is loose but upon the desired operation of the pedal 45 the shaft 19 may be rotated as desired and released as preferred in accordance with the character of the blow or impact of the hammer 38 desired.
The pulley 40 is normally maintained in a raised position through the medium of a retractilemember or coil spring 46 suitably anchored at one endto the rock arm 41 and having its opposite end attached to one of the upsition asillustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings. Each of the rods 23 has an end portion disposed through a bearing 22 or 24 and such end portion is held to the associated hearing by the nuts 23' threaded on said rod and'contacting with the upper and lower faces of the bearing. By backing off one set of nuts 23 and taking up the slack with the opposite pair at either or both of the bearings 22 and'24 the length of the rod or rods between the'bearings 22 and 24 may be lengthened or shortened in order to effect the requisite .adustment to cause the hammer 38 to stand out a particular distance from the anvil 37 said adjustmentbeing necessary to compensate for spring tension, speed and hammer weight.
From the foregoing description it is I be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the. principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be undertsood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim z- A power hammer comprising a stand having an anvil located thereon, a shaft having angularly disposed end portions, a hearing receiving one end portion and mounted upon the stand, a helve attached at a point between its ends to the other end portion of the shaft and disposed transversely of the first mentioned end portion thereof, leaf springs 10 mounted at the opposite sides of the helve, and having end portions secured to the helve at the first mentioned portion of said shaft, a hammer head carried by the helve and adapted to engage the anvil and power operated means connected with the free ends of the leaf springs.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
WILLIAM W. BIELER.
