Be it known that I, OKEY HILL DE VAUGHN, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Parkersburg, in the county of lVood and State of West Virginia, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Saddle-Springs for Drills; and I do declare the following to be a 'full, clear,
and exact description of the'invention, such .as will enable others skilled inthe art to which itappertains to make and use the same.

The object of thelnvention is to provide a simplyoconstructedand efiicient device-of.
this character for use 'in connection with wire lines or soft cables to prevent jars on the rig or derrick and whichis designed to be, mounted on the walking beam of the apparatus.

An intermediate plate or head 13 is mounted to move-vertically betweenithe base and' top-plates and is of a length to v adapt it to fit between the flanges ofthe standards so that thesefiangesrform-iguides for' said head to retain itpagainstlongitudinail and lateral displacement This inter mediate plate 13 is provided on itsjlower face with a plurality of: depending bosseslet which correspond in shape and'number to thebossesS of the baseplateand are positioned to register therewithand to receive the upperxen'dsof the coiled springs 9 as is shown clearly in Fig 1. The springs 12 are shown more closely 'coiled'than the springs 9 and hence the cushioning effect thereof varies correspondingly.

From the'above description and an in spection of Fig. 1 it will be understood that the springs 9' are normally expanded and force. the head 13 and beam WV. 'B-QYLVVdY from each other, thereby compressing springs 12 betweensaid head 13 and the topplatefi, and when a pull down is exerted on the stirrup C the springs 9. are compressed while springs 12 expand and thereby cush ion the movement of the walking beam in both directions and when the pull on the stirrup. is released, the springs 9 expand and springs 12: contract thus cushioning the upward movement of the beam. It is of course understood that the cabl or wireline is connected with the other endof the walking beam W. B.
