The invention relates to improvements in typewritingmachines of the portable type and more particularly to the type-action and its supporting frame, and the main object of the invention is to provide a visible or front strike type-action for a machine of the above character composed mainly of two' unitary parts, namely a vertically actuated approximately L shaped key-bar adapted to actuate a pivoted type-carrying bar for selectively causing one of its characters to print upon a work sheet held by a platen.

With the above and other objects in view the invention will be hereinafter more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.

Referring now to the parts composing the device, 1 denotes the base plate of the associated supporting casing for said type-action,

The printing mechanism or type-action consists principally of a plurality of ap-,
proximately L shaped key-bars 11, having their vertical stem or arm vertically movable in openings 2 and 3 of plates 2 and 3, as at Figs. 1 and 2. The horizontal arm of said,
key-bars is downwardly curved at 11 and in order to return the key-bars to their normal operative position, I provide springs 12 which I prefer to insert onthe vertical arm of the key-bars and acted upon by pins 13, compressing said springs against plate 2, when the key-bars are depressed from their provided key-caps 14, as at Fig. 2. and a pivotal opening 15 elow said projec-. .tion, while between the pro ection and pivotal opening, is a forwardly disposed approximately U shaped recess 15 adapted to-receive a universal bar A, and above said projection is a folded or doubled up body part 15 forming a front-wedge 15 ada ted to actuate a' pair of longitudinally slida le bars B B, for a ribbon feed mechanism. At the uppermost end of said type-bars is a type-block 16, wh1ch may contain one or more characters mdas illustrated are indicated by- 17 and 18, as more clearly seen in Fig. 4. Said type-bars are all arranged in a curved row pivotally held spaced by a common pivot rod 19, which is curved in conformity with the row and having bearings at 20 on provided lugs of a segment 21, as at Fig. 2. Key-bars 11 are pivotally connected individually to type-bars 15, by means of headed pins 22 through the longitudinal slots or openings 15 and fastened at the furthermost horizontal end of the curved arm 11 of said key-bars, the curveon said arm serving to keep it from contacting with said segment 21 during the actuation of the keyand type-bars when one of the characters carried by the bars is caused to print upon a work sheet held by a platen C. It is obvious that some of the type-bars in proximity of their type-blocks require to be angularly shaped so that to allow each type-bar to strike a common printing point of platen C,
when actuated upon by said key-bars.
As a means for closing the open base 1 and top of said casing, when the machine is not in operation, and in order to protect its exteriorly projecting parts when the machine is wanted to be carried around, I provide a cover section 23, having upwardly bent ends or cars 23 hinged at 23 to the furthern'iost horizontal ends of said open base 1, so that if desired the sect'ion may be conveniently swung toward or from the base of said casing,

Asecond cover section 24, having front, right and left walls is hinged at 23 on the bent ends or cars 23 01' cover section 23, as at Figs. 1, 2, and 3. Cover section 24:, thus is also adapted to be swung toward and from the base of said casing either separately or with the first mentioned cover section, as well as adapted to cover the top of said casing to which it may be conveniently seeured'by means of a suitable lock 25, mount ed on the front wall 1 of the casing and having a cooperating part 25 mounted on the front wall of said cover section 24, as at Fig. 1. A handle 26, may be mounted on the front wall 1 of the casing for convenience in carrying the machine around.
The above described type-action operates as follows:
At the depression of a key-bar 11, from its cap 14,;a type-bar 15, moves toward printingposition, the horizontal projection 15 of this bardepresses universal bar A, for escapement operation, and before thetype-bar strikes the printing point, universal bar A,
returns to normal position by entering recess l5 uofthe bar; in the same instant, wedgelS of the type-bars entering inlet D, which is formed by the bentends of slidable bars B B, the latter being in a movable coacting position, causes the slidable bars to move longitudinally in opposite directions, thereby actuating a ribbon feed mechanism, whenthe type-bar retreats from printingposition, the
longitudinally slid-able bars return to'their normal positions.
In the foregoing description, I have embodicdthe preferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto as I am aware that modification may be made therein without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the claims.
Having thusdescribed my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a typewriter the combination with vertically pivoted typebars, ofa casinghaving an open end and an open base extension, of a plate having curved rows of slots all pointing to a common center-and secured between the top and base plate of the casing to form two interiorly spaced compartments, the top plate having curved rows of slots communicating with the rows of the first mentioned slotted plate, the said top plate having a longitudinally disposed curved collar end situated at approximately the center above said open end, and a plurality of key-actuated-bars vertically movable through the slots of said plates and adapted to actuate said plurality of vertically pivoted type-carrying-bars, the latter having head support in said curved collar end.
2. In a typewriter the combination with a pivoted type-bar, of a vertically actuated keybar consisting of a horizontal portion directly pivoted at its forward end to said type-bar, a vertical portion extending upwardly from the rear end of the firstmentioned poi-ti u and having a finger key at its apex, and guiding means for said vertical portion confining the same to vertical reciprocation whereby said type-bar will be actuated arcuately only.
3. In combination with the supporting means in a typewriter, of a plurality of approximately L shaped key-bars adapted to be vertically actuated through said supporting means, the horizontal arm of the key-bars be ing downwardly curved and a plurality of pivotally supported type-carrying-bars indi-' vidually and directly pivoted to'the horizontal armof saidkey-bars for being moved toward and from the printing point of a platen. 4.,In a typewriter the combination of a casing having an open end andianfopen base extension horizontally projecting therefrom, of a cover section hinged longitudinally at the furthermost horizontal edge-'of-saidbase extension and adapted to be swung: toward llu andfrom the underside of said base,;.as'well;as
said casing as well as swingable under the base thereof.
5. In a typewriter the combination of a casing having an open end and an open base exa tension horizontally projecting therefrom, of an n shaped plate longitudinally hinged to the furthermost end of said base extension so as to be swung toward and from said open endvto form a rear wall, and right and left HI wall portions at the open base extension, as well as reversible .to the underside of said open base extension.
6. In combination with a typewriter of a casing having an open end, and an open base extension horizontally projecting therefrom,
of an approximately r1 shaped wall-coversection longitudinally hinged to the furthermost end of the open base extension for being swung toward and from'the open end of the casing to close the side walls of said open base,
vas well as toward and from the underside thereof, of a top cover section longitudinally hinged to the furthermost horizontal'end of the hinged wall cover section for being swung toward and from the top of the casing as well as reversible under the bottom thereof.

In a typewriter the combination of a casing having an open end and an open base extension protruding horizontally therefrom, of a cover section hinged to the immediate 'end of said 0 en base extension so as to be swung towar and from said open end, as well as towards and from the underside of said base extension, of a second cover section having front, right, leftand top walls hinged to the immediate end of the first mentioned hinged cover section for being swung toof slots communicating with the rows of the first mentioned slotted plate, said top plate 50, having a curved collar end centered in pr'oximity of said open end of a plurality of approximately L shaped key-bars vertically movable through the slots of said plates, and
means for returning said key-bars to their 5 normally supported position after having been vertically depressed, said means consist- 7 ing of a spring engageable by the vertical arm of said key-bars during their vertical movement. 9. In a typewriter the combination of a casing having an open end wall and an open base extension,a plate having rows of slots mounted between the top and base plate of the casing to form two interiorly spaced compartments, the top plate having rows of slots communicating with the rows of the first mention slotted plate, of aplurality of approximately L shaped key-bars vertically movable through said rows of slots and means,
a plurality of type-bars pivotallysupported by a semnent, a plurality of vertically actuated key-bars ha'ving each a horizontal portion the forward end of which being downwardly curved and directly pivoted individ ually to said type-bars, said curved end adapted to overlap said segment, a vertical portion on said key-bars extending up.- wardly from the rear end of said horizontal portion, and guiding means for said vertical portion confining the same to vertical reciprocation, for individually actuating said type-bars arcuately only.
11. In a typewriter the combination of a plurality of vertically actuated approximately L shaped key-barsthe horizontal arm of which having each a longitudinally supported pivot or pin, a plurality of type-bars pivotally supported and having each a forward projection with a horizontally disposed slot adapted to admit the pin or pivot of said key-bars for being individually actuated toward and from the printing point of a platen.
12. In combination with a plurality of vertically movable 'key-bars in a typewriter, of
a plurality of pivotally supported types car- "ryingbars having a forwardly projecting body part horizontally slotted and individually pivoted to said key-bars for being moved to strike "the printing point of a platen, and a forwardly disposed notch on'e'ach of the type-bars between its pivoted end and forward projection to receive a universal bar.
13. In-a typewriter the combination of a frame having a plurality of key-actuated barls1 supported therein, of a plurality of pivota war 1y projectin and horizontally slotted body partpivota 1y connected to said keybars for being moved toward and from the supported type-bars having a forprinting point of a platen, said type-bars having a forwardly disposed approximately U shaped recess between the pivot end and projecting body to receive a universal bar.

16. n combination in a typewriter having a casing with an open end wall, of a separative plate mounted between the top and base plates of said casing forming the easing into two interiorly spaced compartments, and means for removably securing said separative plate in its spaced position, said means consisting of a plurality of vertical supports Iastened at one end to either the base or top plate of the casing, said supports having each a hollow 'or separative sleeve between. the fastened end and separative plate, the upper ends of said supports driven in borings of the separative plate through a second hollow or separative sleeve, the second ed of said supports having each a threaded socket, and screws driven through borings of the adjacent plate and threaded in said sockets.
17. In a typewriter the combination of a type-bar having a fulcrumed end, a horizontally slotted projection above said fulorumed end, a forwardly disposed recess beof longitudinally slidable bars durin the entrance of said type-bars between said longitudinally slidable bars.
