My invention relates to paper making machines, and especially to machines known as cylinder type machines.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple and practical construction of machine of the class specified.
Another object of the invention is to arrange for the advantageous application of suction to the cylinder and also to arrange for the ready adjustment of the pressure of c same as desired.
Another object of the invention is to arrange tor the withdrawal of water from cylinder by suction. l
Another object of the invention is to permit independent regulation of the suction for forming and dryin the paper on the same cylinder and for withdrawing the water.

Referring to the drawings, I show a rotary cylinder 1 having a perforate cylindrical wall adapted for forming paper.
The cylinder 1 is mounted on a fixed tubular shaft 3, supported at its ends by pedestalsI 4 and 5. Shaft 3 has upstanding tubularv members 6 6 and downwardly extending members 77. The former are for exhausting airfrom the upper part of the cylinder 1 to 'form and dry the paper. The latter (members 7 7) are for exhausting air from the lower part of the cylinder for withdrawing water therefrom-water which is with drawn from t-hepulp` material in the formation and drying of the paper.
The tubular members 6-6 are connected with the upper longitudinal section or compartment 9 of shaft 3; the members 7-7 with the lower compartment 10 thereof. Compartment 9 is connectedA with chambers 11 and 12 in pedestals 4 and 5, and compartment 10 with chambers 13 and 14 in same.
Air pipes 15 and 16 are connected with chambers 11 and 12 respectively. Air pipes 17 and 18 are connected with colnpartments 13 and 14, respectively. Air pipes 15 and 17 are preferably connected together, as are 16 and 18, and all run to a suitable suction pump 20. Pipes 15, 16, 17 and 18 are provided with Valves 21, 22, 23 and 24, respectively, so that air pressure in each pipe may be independently regulated. Water dis- 1923. serial no. @45h28.

bers 13 and 14, respectively, and are connected to a suitable pump 27, which is also connected with a head box 28 for supplying papermaterial to cylinder 1. A plate or box, (not shown) is located within cylinder 1, opposite the apertures therein, between the take-od of the paper and thel point of applicatlon of the pulp, to prevent air from entering and destroying the vacuum.
In operation, paper materialis fed from head box 28 to vat 29 containing `cylinder 1, so that such material may be applied to the lower portion of cylinder for forming paper thereon. rlhe arrangement for doing this is shown in my copending application Serial No. 630,484, filed April 7, 1923, and is not described herein as ity forms no. part of my present invention. The paper material adieres to the cylinder as same revolves, being formed thereon and dried by the suction in upper part of cylinder controlled by pipes (5*6. The water withdrawn from paper material drops to the bottom 4of cylinder and is lifted by suction of pipes 7-7 and `siphoned into compartments, 13A and 14, whence' it is withdrawn by pipes 25 and 26 and then returned to head box 28 for further use.
Ordinarily air pressure in 10, 13 and 14 is reduced somewhat more than in 9, 11 and 12, so as to secure the proper action. Regulation of pressures may be secured by valves 21, 22, 23 and 24.
lln this way, water is automatically removedxby suction, as well as paper being formed by same, and consequently the suction apparatus usedor forming and drying paper on cylinder may also be used for withdrawing water. The water drawing suction may also to some extent, and ,under certain circumstances, assist in withdrawing water from paper material.
lt will be `understood that changes and modiiications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What l claim is:
1. A machine of the class s ecified-having a hollow rotary member an Va supporting shaft therefor, said shaft being divlded into' separate compartments, one of which is for forming communication to the. upper part of the cylinder for withdrawing air, and the other of which is` for withdrawing watei-` from the lower part of the cylinder, and separate air pipes communicating with said separate compartments.
2. The combination of a hollow rotary forming member, means for withdrawing air and water from" the interior of said memy forming member, a' support therefbr comprising a tubular member and pedestals, said tubular member and pedestal having air and Water passages, air pipes connected with said passages' and a ,water outlet pipe connected with the water passage.
4. The combination. of a hollow rotary forming member, a support therefor comprising hollow pedestals and a tubular member, said pedestals formin separate air and water passages with said tu ular member and upper air connections for both water and air passages and a lower water pipe for the lower water passage.
5. The combination of a hollow rotary forming member, supportin 'means therefor comprising hollow pedesta s and a tubular member, said pedestals and tubular member forming separate. passages for removing an" and water from said forming member, `and connected air pi for the air water ipe for t e water passage.
6. 7. The combination of a hollow rotary formino' member and supporting means therefor?? said means comprising a. tubular member having upperan lower chambers and hollow'pedestals having passages coniiectinfr said chambers with exhaust connections fhor said upper and lower chambers and with a water ipe for thelower chamber.

13. The combination with a hollow rotary water pipe connection for the water passa e.

The combination of a hollow rotary forming member and supporting means therefor, said means comprising atubular member and pedestals, each of said pedestals formin a water passage with a chamber 1n said tu ular member and-having an upper exhaust and lower pump connections and also having an upper side air passage forming an air exhaust with an air chamber in said tubular member anda second exhaust connection, said exhaust connections being adapted to vary the exhaust and being connected together to a common source of ex haust pressure.
10. The combination of a hollow rotary forming member, a supporting and exhausting means therefor comprising a tubular member and hollow pedestals, an air passage therein formed of thel upper portion of said tubular member and extending into the upper side portion of said pedestals, a water passage formed of the lower portion of said 4tubular member and said pedestals, said pedestal having a lower water mp connection and separate variable ex aust connections for said air and water passages, said exhaust connections being connected together n to a single source of exhaust pressure.

The combination with a hollow rotary forming member of a support therefor comprising a tubular member o en at both ends and pedestals supporting t e olpposite ends estals and havin their sides fitted against the ends of said tu ular member and provided with apertures corresponding with the open ends of said member and also with top apertures.
12. The combination with a hollow rotary forming member, Yof a support therefor, comprising a tul ular member having open ends, pedestals at the opposite end of said member, said pedestals having side. openings corresponding to the open ends of said member, said member having a longitudinally extending partition dividing 1t into longitudinal compartments and said pedestals having artitions forming continuations of said tubu ar member partitions, said pedestal partitionsextendin first horizontally from said tubular memer partition and thence upwardly so as to divide the upper part of said pedestals into separate chamforming member, of a support therefor, comprising a tubular member having open ends, pedestals at the opposite end of saidl member, said pedestals having side openings corresponding to the open ends of said member, said member having a longitudinally extending partition dividin it into longitudinal compartments and said pedestals having partitions forming continuations eing hollow of said tubular member partitions, said pedestal partitions extendin first horizontally from said tubular mem er artition and thence upwardly so as to divide the upper part of said pedestals into separate chambers, and pressure pipes communicating with said chambers at the upper ends of said pedestals.

The combination with a hollow rotary forming member, of a support therefor, comprising a tubular member having open ends, pedestals at the opposite ends of said member, said pedestals having side openings corresponding to the open ends of said member, said member having a longitudinally extending partition dividing it into longitudinal-tcompartments and said pedes- `tals havin partitions forming continuations of said tu ular member partitions, said pedestal partitions extending irst horizontally from said tubular member artition and thence upwardly so as to divide the upper part of said pedestals into separate chambers, and pressure pipes communicating with said` chambers at the upper ends of said pedestals, the pressure pipes for each pedestal being connected together and provided with valves for independent regulation.

The combination of a rotary forming member, a tubular member therefor, having an open end, and provided with air and water compartments, a pedestal at the end of said tubular member, said pedestal being provided with air and water chambers communicating with the air and water chambers of said support and exhaust pi es connected with said chambers and a so connectedwith one another and provided with the separate pressure regulating valves and a water drain pipe, also connected with said water compartment..
