Abstract

338,547. Sundstr÷m, E. F., and StÚen, K. E. July 18, 1929. Cylinder paper-machines. -Apparatus for separating material, such as paper pulp, from a liquid holding it in suspension comprises a closed chamber part of the bottom of which is formed by the suriace of a perforated rotating drum and which is provided with means for supplying the suspension to the cnamber under pressure. A suspension is delivered from an elevated receptacle 4, Fig. 1, to a closed chamber 1 and the pulp forms a layer 5 on a drum 2 and is removed around a roller 6. As shown in Fig. 2, the suspension is supplied under pressure through an inlet 3 and air or other gas under pressure through an inlet 8. The air or gas serves to dry the pulp on the drum above the liquid level. An endless band 9 of felt or wire cloth may be arranged to contact with the pulp layer. As indicated in Fig. 4 a further stage of drying may be carried out in a separate chamber having one or more rotary drums forming part of the base. The layer is guided round these drums by rollers 11. Such a chamber may be divided into compartments by partitions 12, each compartment having its own inlet 8, through which gas at the particular temperature and pressure desired for that compartment is admitted. The rotation of the drums 2 may be continuous or intermittent. Suction chambers may be provided within the drums.
