Application filed March 2, 1927. Serial No. 172,035.
This invention relates to improvement in safety devices for foot power presses, that is, devices which will arrest the movement of the ram in the event of the hand or fingers of the operator being in the path thereof on the downward thrust. The Object of the invention is to provide simple means which may be readily attached to presses of usual construction, which will be positive in action and in no wise interfere with the regular operation of a press, and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: 7
Fig. 1 is a front view of a safety device constructed in accordance with my invention and shown as applied to a press with the parts in their normal positions;
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a front'view with the guard-lever shown in broken lines and showing the bolt in its thrust position, in which the ram is locked Fg'. 4; is a similar view showing the. parts in the normal position, just as the bolt-latch has been tripped;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of Fig. 1; V
Fig. 6 is a lever detached;
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the'bo'ltlatch detached; I
Fig. 8 is a perspective view tached; and a Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the boltcarrying block detached, showing the upper end of the guideway secured thereto.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a guard 10 formed from sheet-metal and of the required form for use on the press to which it is applied. This guard is ad ustably connected with a vertically-arranged slide 11 which moves between guideways 12'and 13 attached to a block 14 which, in turn, is screwed to the ram 15 which is mounted ina press-frame 16 and operated by a l.ever,17, which is usually moved by a treadle, not shown. Secured to the face of the frame 16 opposite the guideways 12 and 13, is a rack 18 formed with notches 19, 20, and 21, more or less in number. Mounted in the block 1 1 for transverse movement is a bolt 22 provided with a beveled nose 23 and a locking-notch 24:.
on the line 55 The bolt is also provided at its end with guide-p ns 25 extending through a gu1deperspective view of the. guard of the bolt deblock 26 formed integral with or attached to the block 14, and around these pins are springs 27 which tend to move the bolt forward. The bolt is normally held in its retired position by a pivotal bolt-latch 28 which is pivoted to the block 1 1 and formed with a locking-notch 29 to engage with the edge 30 of the notch 24 in the bolt. Carried by this latch-bolt is a stud 31 which enters a camweight 38, the tendency of this lever and weight being to throw the bolt forward in the same way as the springs 27.
Under normal conditions and as shown in 1 F ig. 1 of the drawings, the bolt is held in its retired position by the bolt-latch 28, so that the ram is freeto be moved down and up as required. The stud 31, traveling freely in the cam-groove 32, will, on the upward movement of the ram, move the guard-lever up- -ward and raise the guard above the work-bed 35, so as to give free access thereto, but should the fingers be in the path of the guard-levcr 33 on the downward movement, further downward movement of'the guard is arrested and, through the link 34, lifts the guard-lever 33, causing the point 39 formed by the camgroove 32 tobe moved into the path'of the stud 31 of the bolt-latch 28 and lift that latch Instead of employing the springs out of thepath of the bolt 22, allowin the bolt to move forward under theaction or the E springs 27 or bolt-lever 37, or both, and enter one of the notches 19, 20 or 21 in the rack 18 and thus lock the ram against further clownward movement. Owing to the leverage and freedom of movement of the parts, this tripping will take place with but slight pressure upon the fingers by the guard 10.
To restore the parts to the normal position, it is only necessary to raise the ram which, owing to the inclined surfaces of thenotches in the rack, will force the bolt rearward into position to be engaged by the bolt-latch 28. Preferably, a bolt-stop 40 will cross the boltrecess 41 in the block 14 and the bolt will be provided with a clearancesp ace42 for this stop.
avery simple manner, a safety device for presses'whic'h will be positive in its action mounted in said block, means tending to throw the bolt forward, a latch for holding said bolt in itsretired position and provided with a stud, a guard-lever pivotally connected with the said rack and formed with a cam slot into which the said stud extends, and a link connecting said guard-lever with said slide.
)2. A safety device for foot power presses, comprising a guard, a slide to which the guard isattached, a guideway for said slide arrangedvertically at one side of the ram, a block connected with the ram of a press, said guideways connected with said block, a rack secured to the frame on the oppositeside of the ram, a longitudinally--movable bolt mounted in said block, a spring tending to throw the bolt forward,a la'tchfor holding said bolt in its retired position and provided with a stud, a guard-lever pivot-ally connected with the said rack and formed with a cam-slot into which the said stud extends,
and a link connecting said guard-lever with said slide.
3. A safety device for foot power presses, comprising a guard, a' slide to which the guard is attached, a guideway for said slide arranged vertically at one slde of the rain, a
block connected with the ram of a press, said guideways connectedwith said block, a rack It will thus be seen that I have provided, in
secured to the frame on the opposite side of the ram, a longitudinally-movable bolt mounted in said block, means tending to throwthe bolt forward, a latch for holding said bolt in its retired position and provided with a stud, a guard-lever pivotally connected with the said rack and formed with a camslot into whichthe' said stud extends, a link connecting said guard-lever with said slide. and a spring tending to draw the free end of the guard-lever downward.
4. Asafety device for foot power presses,
comprising a guard, a slide to which the guard is attached, a guidcwa for said slide arranged vertically at one si e of the ram, a block connected with" the ram of a press, said guideways connected with said block, a rack securedto the frame on the opposite side of the ram,ja longitudinally-movable bolt havmg a beveled nose mounted in said block,
means tending to throw the bolt forward, a
latch for holding said bolt in its retired osition and provided with a stud, a guard: ever of the ram, a longitudinally-movable bolt having a beveled nose and a locking-notch mounted in said block, means tending to throwthe bolt forward, a latch for holding said bolt in its retired position and provided with a stud, a guard-lever pivotally con nected with the said rack and formed with a cam-slot into which the said stud extends,
and a link connecting said guard lever with said slide. i
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification. 1
